12/19/2012What Types of Chemicals?• Naturally occurring <strong>and</strong> synthetic chemicals known to causecancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm• Chemicals include additives or ingredients in pesticides,common household products, food, drugs, dyes, or solvents• Chemicals may also be used in manufacturing <strong>and</strong>construction, or they may be by products of chemicalprocessesWhat is <strong>Expo</strong>sure?• <strong>Expo</strong>sures can be oral, inhalation, transdermal, orh<strong>and</strong> to mouth• <strong>Expo</strong>sure is measured in micrograms per day basedon the average use of the product• Not concentration of the chemicalRequirements for Businesses• Businesses are required to provide a "clear <strong>and</strong> reasonable" warningbefore knowingly <strong>and</strong> intentionally exposing anyone to a listed chemical• Can be given by a variety of means, such as by labeling a consumerproduct, posting signs at the workplace, distributing notices at a rentalhousing complex, or publishing notices in a newspaper• Once a chemical is listed, businesses have 12 months to comply withwarning requirements• Prohibits companies that do business within California from knowinglydischarging listed chemicals into sources of drinking water• Once a chemical is listed, businesses have 20 months to comply with thedischarge prohibition.3
