12/19/2012What Types of Chemicals?• Naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals known to causecancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm• Chemicals include additives or ingredients in pesticides,common household products, food, drugs, dyes, or solvents• Chemicals may also be used in manufacturing andconstruction, or they may be by products of chemicalprocessesWhat is Exposure?• Exposures can be oral, inhalation, transdermal, orhand to mouth• Exposure is measured in micrograms per day basedon the average use of the product• Not concentration of the chemicalRequirements for Businesses• Businesses are required to provide a "clear and reasonable" warningbefore knowingly and intentionally exposing anyone to a listed chemical• Can be given by a variety of means, such as by labeling a consumerproduct, posting signs at the workplace, distributing notices at a rentalhousing complex, or publishing notices in a newspaper• Once a chemical is listed, businesses have 12 months to comply withwarning requirements• Prohibits companies that do business within California from knowinglydischarging listed chemicals into sources of drinking water• Once a chemical is listed, businesses have 20 months to comply with thedischarge prohibition.3
