keynotes<strong>conference</strong> speakers + presentersFALLEN FRUITWhat began as creating maps <strong>of</strong> public fruittrees in Los Angeles has grown into a series<strong>of</strong> photographic portraits, experimentaldocumentary videos, public art installations,and curatorial projects across the globe.Using fruit as a lens to see the world, FallenFruit explores themes <strong>of</strong> urban space,neighborhood and place, and new forms<strong>of</strong> citizenship. The collective’s works havebrought the attention <strong>of</strong> local communitiesand the global art community alike.David Burns is a new media artist working inSouthern California, whose work has shown atThe Getty Center, The Tate Modern/Tank.tv,The Armenian Museum <strong>of</strong> Experimental Art,Seoul Museum <strong>of</strong> Art, The Athens Biennale,The Ghetto Biennale, Ars Electronica, LosAngeles County Museum <strong>of</strong> Art, Yerba BuenaCenter for the Arts, and elsewhere.Austin Young is a portrait photographerand video artist based in Los Angeles since1985. He has created an encyclopedicdocumentation <strong>of</strong> sub- and trans-culture inNew York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco,and his work has expanded to includeperformative collaborations with the public.He is co-founder <strong>of</strong> the art collectives FallenFruit and Tranimal. Young’s work has beenfeatured in Vogue, Rolling Stone, Flaunt, andInterview Magazine, and shown at LACMA,Matadero Madrid, Ars Electronica, WOWStorefront Gallery, Berkeley Art Museum, theHammer Museum, and Stephen Cohen.GUILLERMO GÓMEZ-PEÑAGuillermo Gómez-Peña is a performanceartist, writer, activist, radical pedagogue,director <strong>of</strong> San Francisco-based performancetroupe La Pocha Nostra, and one <strong>of</strong> the“most provocative and dynamic artists on thecontemporary art scene.”Gómez-Peña was the first Chicano artist to beawarded the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship,is the recipient <strong>of</strong> a Bessie and an AmericanBook Award, and on the UTNE Reader’s15“List <strong>of</strong> 100 Visionaries.” Gómez-Peña isa regular contributor for newspapers andmagazines in the US, Mexico, and Europe anda contributing editor to The Drama Review(NYU-MIT). His work pushes boundariesand mixes genres, exploring cross-culturalissues, immigration, the politics <strong>of</strong> language,“extreme culture,” and new technologiesin the era <strong>of</strong> globalization and has beenpresented at over 700 venues across theglobe, including the Tate Modern and WhitneyBiennial.In 2012, Gómez-Peña received the FreeCulture Award from AS220, which includedthe commission <strong>of</strong> a mural collaborationbetween Gómez-Peña and Providence artistJoan Wyand entitled “The New Barbarians: ToThe Lords Of Censorship.”TERI ROFKARTeri R<strong>of</strong>kar is an internationally renownedfiber artist from the Sitka Tribe <strong>of</strong> Alaska. Forover 25 years Teri has been weaving exquisitebaskets and textiles from cedar, sprucetree roots, ferns, and mountain goat woolwhich she collects in the woods and alongthe shoreline <strong>of</strong> her Northwest coast home.“I was introduced to Tlingit weaving by myGrandmother, when I was a child. She livedin Pelican, AK, where I spent many summersfishing and playing in Lisianski Inlet. The fun<strong>of</strong> traditional gathering as a child continuesto fuel my investigations <strong>of</strong> climate, geology,and chemistry today as an adult. I harvest andweave in Tlingit methods passed down forthousands <strong>of</strong> years, following the steps <strong>of</strong> myAncestors.”R<strong>of</strong>kar has served as an Artist in Residenceat the Alaska Native Heritage Center inAnchorage and at the Southeast Alaska IndianCultural Center in Sitka.
