<strong>Student</strong> matters44FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEAustudy/Youth Allowance – these schemes provide financialassistance based on income and asset tests to students who are 16years old and over. Youth Allowance applies to students up to, andincluding, 24 years of age. Austudy is for those 25 years of age andover. In most cases you need to be enrolled in a full-time course.Abstudy – the Abstudy Scheme provides financial assistance onan income-tested basis to students of Aboriginal or Torres StraitIslander descent. This assistance is paid to full-time and part-timestudents enrolled in an approved course. If you are eligible forAbstudy, you may also be able to claim incidental allowancesand living-away-from-base expenses (from your normal place ofresidence). Application forms and information booklets for theseschemes are available from the nearest Centrelink office.RECOGNITION – GETTING CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUE<strong>TAFE</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> recognises the skills and knowledge you have gainedin other courses, life experience, work or training provided atwork. You may be able to have your prior learning recognisedand credited against a course of study. When you apply forRecognition, you need to compare the things you have learnedfrom your formal or informal study, work and life experience withthe learning outcomes of a <strong>TAFE</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> unit. You may be entitledto gain Recognition which will exempt you from attending one ortwo units, or maybe all, of a <strong>TAFE</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> course.Recognition is granted on the basis of documentary evidenceof formal studies completed within <strong>TAFE</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> or with othereducational organisations where credit transfer arrangementsexist, for example, formal qualifications from <strong>TAFE</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>,university, school, (HSC) or other registered training organisations<strong>TAFE</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> – NSI <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Guide</strong> <strong>2011</strong>in Australia. When you enrol in a course of study recognitionmay also be granted on the basis of documentary evidence ofstudy, work or life experience that match the knowledge and skillscontained in the <strong>TAFE</strong> qualification.Cost of Recognition: There is no fee for processing Recognitionapplications for students currently enrolled in <strong>TAFE</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>. However, ifyou are not currently enrolled, a fee may be charged.When to apply: It is best to apply for Recognition before classesbegin, however it’s preferred no later than the third week afterthe start of your course of study.Lodging your application: Visit the Customer Service Centre at yourcollege or ask your teacher how to apply. There may be some unit(s) ofcompetency/module(s) where it is NOT possible to transfer yourresult. Instead your <strong>TAFE</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> Transcript of Academic Record willindicate that the unit of competency/module has been achievedby advanced standing.
