University NewsGolf program begins<strong>Black</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>State</strong> will begin its firstwomen's golf season under thedirection of Sarah Johnson, a certifiedgolf professional.BHSU is adding golf to its list ofwomen's sports this fall. Johnson, who isalso manager and golf pro at the SpearfishCanyon Country Club, is looking forwardto the challenge of building a team andbecoming competitive in the DakotaAthletic Conference (DAC-10). Johnsonsaid she is excited to be leading the BHSUgolf team."Not many college coaches are certifiedas golf pros," Johnson said. In the late 90s,Johnson coached the men's golf team atWebber College in Babson Park, Fla. Theteam was nationallyranked in 1997 and 1998.Johnson began golfingwhile in elementaryschool and still playsprofessionally. Sherecently placed 11th inthe Nevada Open. Herprofessional playinghighlights include atop 50 finish in the2002 Futures TourQualifying inLakeland, Fla., a top10 finish in the 2001LPGA T&CPActor Kevin Costner recently designated $10,000 to BHSUstudent scholarships from a motorcycle rally ride he ledthis summer.Several different scholarships have been established includingtwo $2,000 athletic scholarships, three $1,000 scholarships forentrepreneurial studies students, two $1,000 scholarships forAmerican Indian Studies students, and a $1,000 scholarship for arodeo club student. The scholarships will be awarded annually.Costner made the scholarship donation in an effort to "giveback" to the community and to encourage university students.Championships inPinehurst, N.C., andwinning the 2000PGA Women's StrokePlay Championshipin Atlanta, Ga.Johnson is certifiedas a golf professionalby both thePGA and LPGA.Before moving toSpearfish three seasonsago, Johnsonserved as a golfprofessional at privateclubs inColorado andFlorida.Johnson has abachelor's degreefrom RollinsCollege in WinterPark, Fla., andhas completedseveral PGA andLPGA nationaltraining programs.BHSU athletesand coachrecognizedMany BHSU athletes received specialrecognition for their accomplishmentson the field and inthe classroom this year. The women’s 3200meter relay team brought home All-American honors.The Yellow Jackets' women's relayteam, consisting of Liz Woodruff,Chamberlain; Crystal Hostetter,Thermopolis, Wyo.; Jamie Hahn,Spearfish; and Wesleigh Hardy, Spearfish;placed fifth. According to ScottWalkinshaw, head coach, this was the fifthconsecutive year that BHSU earned All-American honors in the 3200 meter relay.University NewsIndoor track and field athletes place at nationalsMen’s BB coach resignsSix-year veteran <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>State</strong> University men's basketball coachMike Kruszynski resigned following the end of the 2004-2005 basketballseason.At BHSU, Kruszynski compiled a winning percentage of .485 with a 83-88 overall record. Kruszynski led the team to national tournament berths in2001-2002 and 2002-2003."We appreciate the job Mike has done the last six years and we wish himsuccess in his future endeavors," Steve Meeker, athletic director, said.Kruszynski came to BHSU from San Jose <strong>State</strong> University where he served Kruszynskias an assistant coach. Prior to that he was head coach at Independent Collegein Independence, Kan. A native of Chicago, Ill., Kruszynski graduated from MaryUniversity in 1986. He earned a master's degree in athletic administration and businessfrom Central Missouri <strong>State</strong> University in Warrensburg in 1989.Cross Country team honoredFor the men's team, Zach Kintzley,Poudre, Colo., placed seventh in the milewith a time of 4:16.63. Although he missedout on All-American honors by just oneplace his time ranks as the fourth fastestindoor time in BHSU men's history.The women's distance medley relaywhich included Hardy, Surrena Davidson,Sheridan, Wyo.; Hahn, and Hostetter, hadthe ninth best time in the semifinals butmissed qualifying for the finals by 1.3 seconds.The men's distance medley relayteam also missed qualifying for the finalfinishing with the 10th best time in thesemifinals. The men's team consisted ofMike Nekuda, Hot Springs; Ross Reede,Spearfish; John Williams, Spearfish; andKintzley,Davidson and Callie Ackerman competedin the 400 meter run with the 11thand 18th best times in the preliminaries.Kristal Keffeler, Faith, finished 11th in theshot put.The men's cross country team was recently honored for winning the 2004 Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC-10)championship and then placing in the top 20 at the national tournament. This was the team's fourth conference winin the past five years. At the NAIA national championship meet in Louisville, Ky., the team placed 17th for their fifthconsecutive top 20 finish at nationals.
