Our Newest Kindness Project: Starfish International MISSionsby Debra ScaturroBy participating in SIM Kindness Projectyou will be joining a network of caringindividuals who demonstrate their concernfor children of the world by helpingimprove the quality of children's lives.Starfish International MISSions (SIM) ispart of the MISS Foundation’s KindnessProject. Through the MISS Foundation,SIM is a registered all volunteer, nonprofitorganization dedicated to helpingorphans whose affliction exceeds thecare giving ability of their community. The MISS Foundation is dedicated tohelping families enduring grief followinga child family member’s death. TheKindness Project is one way the MISSFoundation helps empower families toheal from the overwhelming grief afterchild death.Debra Scaturro’s 18-year-old son,Shawn, was killed in a boating accidentat the age of eighteen. Debra foundedStarfish International MISSions last year. While the mission itself is fairly new, sonew in fact that Debra has been doingmost of the work herself. Debra has beeninvolved in various volunteer efforts fora considerable amount of time, i.e., thisisn't some fly-by-night impromptu endeavor.Starfish International MISSionswas designed to improve the quality oflife for orphan’s one life at a time. Themission's theme, if you will, is centeredaround the "Starfish" story posted on herwebsite at: www.hostmom.comSIM has been asked by an adoption resourcegroup to help these children findadoptive families.Sasha, on the pictured below on the left, age 7 has asked (begged really) for afamily and he is truly wonderful. He isgifted artistically, smart, and our coordinatorsays that he is one who will not dowell if his life continues in the orphanagesystem. He is due to be transferred to theolder boys home soon (this fall I think)and they are repeatedly asking us to findparents for him. We have lots of videoon him, and I think he will be one ofthose who is grateful for a chance at life.Sasha is the most urgent need now.The beautiful little girl pictured below onthe right is Aida; she just turned 3-yearsold.Aida has been diagnosed with Hep-B+. These are just two of the many, many orphans looking for somebody tolove them. Please let us know if you canfind room in your home and your heartfor one of these beautiful children. The Kindness Project that SIM is launchingthis year is called "Tee-Shirts forTots". The point of this project is to sendtee shirts to an orphanage in Kazakhstan.During July, we willbe collecting and/orpurchasing 150 teeshirts for children, ages 1-4, who live inan orphanage in Kazakhstan. The teeshirts will be silk-screened with a logoexclusively designed for this project. While we cannot meet these children'smany needs, we can provide a useful giftthat will make him/her happy and showthat we care. When asked why this projectwas chosen rather than a monetarydonation to the orphanage or some otherequally worthy project Debra replied bysaying:“SIM decided to pursue this particularproject for a couple of reasons - the childrenneed clothing and perhaps most importantly,to put a smile on the face of achild who is not accustomed to receivinggifts! Today a tee-shirt tomorrow a prosthesisor lifesaving surgery."For more information about SIM’s KindnessProject please contact:Debra Scaturro at (973) 579-1448 oremail us at Starfish@hostmom.comSasha, Age 7 Aida, Age 3I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow braveby reflection. 'Tis the busines s of little minds to shrink, but he whose heart is firm, and whoseconscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles nto udeath.--Thomas PainePage 16M.I.S.S.ing Angels ...

Ohio MISS and the Red Cross Build Bridgesby Kym SmithNovember 30th, 1998… That day dramaticallychanged my life. The date andtime are etched in my heart forever. Thatday, I lost a part of me. A beautiful littleblonde who shared my life for almost 14months went "home" to heaven, taking apart of me "home" with her. I rememberher smile....I remember the way she feltin my arms. I remember her little girlishgiggle.....And the words she spoke stillring in my ears everyday.. “Na_Na!” asshe practically jumped from herMommy’s arms to mine. The quote "When God closes one door,He opens another” seemed incredulous tome. My Granddaughter left this world sosuddenly; there was no time for goodbyes. And I grieved. I grieved for thebeautiful little girl who adored herGrandmother, I grieved for the Grandmother, who adored her a million timesin return, It took 2-1/2 years to begin seeinga light at the end of the dark tunnel. In May 2001, the OHIO MISS Foundationbecame a reality. My goal? To reachout to other grieving parents and grandparents,so they should never walk thisheartbreaking journey alone. In June 2001, the MISSing Angels MemorialQuilt was created with love. OnJuly 2001, in a meeting held on July19th with the Way Station, the SalvationArmy and Our Local Red Cross Chapter,I introduced the MISS Foundation andmyself. Donna Allison, Director of ourlocal American Red Cross listened enthusiasticallyas I talked about the Foundationcreated to help families. Donnaask if we would be interested in working"hand in hand" with the Red Cross and ifwe’d be willing to be placed on the volunteerlist. This commitment wouldmean that phone calls can come in at anytime, early morning, late night.Being placed on the disaster team wouldmean whenever this Red Cross was dispatchedto a disaster site where childrenwere involved, the MISS Foundationwould go and work with families thathad lost children in disasters. My answerswere a very firm “Yes!”Now, throughout all states, the MISSFoundation and the Red Cross will worktogether, along with other ancillarygroups, like the Compassionate Friends,SOS, and POMC to help families in crisis. They would now have access to theMISS volunteers or facilitators, to supportfamilies at disasters. The serviceswe would provide as a representative ofthe MISS Foundation would be directinvolvement with the families. What dothe survivors need most? To feel compassion, empathy, kindness. To feelsomeone’s arms around them for it mayonly be the arms of a support person thatkeeps us standing. The words ‘I’m sosorry’ and ‘You must hurt so much’mean a great deal to a grieving familyespecially when they come from someonewho truly knows the pain. Working“hand in hand” with the American RedCross will create bonds that miles cannotseparate. In Donna’s words, she prays “our meetingswill be social only” because a callfrom her or another member of theAmerican Red Cross Team means anotherchild has died and another child, mother, father, grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling, and community grieves.Ohio MISS FoundationKym Smith, Facilitatorhttp://autumn101197.tripod.comWhatever course you decide upon, there isalways someone to tell you that you arewrong. Joel’s Gateby Nancy GraysonThis late summer day the sunlight playswith the large fluttery leaves of a toweringtree, the common name of this tree is,The Tree of Heaven. Cradled under thelarge branches of this Tree of Heavenstands Joel’s Gate, a large metal framedgate, located in a beautiful children’sgarden between rows of whimsicalweathered picket fencing. This joyfulgate brings a smile to anyone’s face. Allhand forged creatively from metal, it hasthe shape of a house and opens wide inthe center. The gate is covered in flowers, stars, two windows, and a littlebunny in one corner. The rusty finishgate looks as if it has been swinging herefor years. Proclaimed in the peak of thetall house shaped gate, in fun, swirlyletters, are the words “Joel’s Gate.” Joelis our son, he died at six weeks old. Thesight of Joel’s Gate touches my heart, brings tears to my eyes, and then alwaysa short time later a tender smile, I amJoel’s mom.It was just two years ago, August 27,1999 when our baby boy, Joel AlbertGrayson, arrived much too early and incritical condition. On October 8, 1999,Joel died peacefully in our arms. Peter,Joel’s daddy and I were both veryclear how we wanted to celebrateJoel’s first birthday. The day was aquiet celebration at the Oregon Coast, with a tearful round of “Happy Birthday,”over a cute Tigger- topped cake, softly we blew out the single birthdaycandle. The evening’s sunset highlightedthe words we had written insand, along the beach, “Joel, We LoveYou.” Without Joel, his first birthdaywas all I could have hoped it wouldbe. In the back of my mind, I wonderedhow we would commemoratethe first anniversary of Joel’s death, just six weeks later. After our son’s death, Peter and I decidedto move from Arizona. Weneeded a new place, we needed to feelsafe, we decided to move to Boise,Idaho. October of 2000 came. We hadnot found a job, or a house in Boise, yet it was Joel’s heaven day and westill didn’t know what to do for Joel orPage 18ourselves. Visiting Boise on a house andjob search trip we discovered a localtreasure the Idaho Botanical Garden.Perhaps we could donate a tree for Joel’sfirst heaven day? We met with JudyOuderkirk, the Gardens Director. Judyembraced us with heartfelt compassionfor Joel and our wishes to remember ourchild. A drawing of a gate was on herdesk. She asked us if we would like todonate this gate to the Children’s Ga r-den? It was perfect., It would be Joel’sGate! With a few minor additions to thegate by artist Tim Hysell, we had createda charming work of art for our son.We now live in Boise and have a specialplace to go and think of our son Joel.During the winter holidays the entire garden, including Joel’s gate, is filled withten’s of thousands of tiny lights for theWinter Garden Glow event. Together, asa family we make a winter wreath todecorate Joel’s gate. As the seasonschange in the Garden, Joel’s gate is alwaysthere for us and for all the manyGarden’s visitors. A visitor may ask,“Who is Joel?” They are told about amuch loved and dearly missed little boy. This artist’s rendering of Joel’s Gate by ChristineMiller,www.swirlygirl.comJoel Albert Graysondearly loved, sorely MISSedJoel is our only child. His death is a tragedy, his life is God’s blessing - our blessing. This garden gate tribute is perfectfor our son, it is perfect for us.
