MESSAGE FROMTHE CHAIRIn 2012, New Jersey SEEDS celebrated an important milestone:two decades dedicated to changing lives through education.Over the past 20 years, SEEDS has supported almost 1,800motivated, high-achieving middle and high school studentsfrom low-income families on their personal path to success.Today, we are a nationally recognized educational accessorganization that continues to break new ground. For some, birthdays and anniversaries are met with a tingeof nostalgia and a sigh. Not so for New Jersey SEEDS. Wecelebrated our 20th Anniversary in style: a new look, newleadership and a memorable party—and that was in the firstsix months alone! We entered our third decade with a vibrant logo. Our Aprilanniversary benefit, Leading Change, was attended by morethan 300 guests and raised a phenomenal $750,000. Theevening was a joyous celebration of student achievement, strong partnerships with the independent school andcollege communities, and the ongoing commitment of donorsand friends. On the leadership front, I had the honor to succeed BobbieFrankfort, who ended her outstanding six years as Chair. TheBoard was pleased to welcome four new Trustees who joinedus in the fall of 2012: Janice Beckmen, Michael Bonarti(Corporate Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary,Automatic Data Processing), Theo Lubke (Chief RegulatoryReform Officer of the Securities Division at Goldman Sachs),and Lee Shavel (Chief Financial Officer and Executive VicePresident, The NASDAQ OMX Group). Our president, RonniDenes, who celebrated her first full year with SEEDS, continuedto raise the performance bar for this exceptional organization. Not everything changed, however. Our annual Golf & TennisClassic, sponsored by Bleakley, Schwartz, Cooney & Finney,LLC and chaired by Trustees Andy Schwartz and Abby O’Neill, remained central to our development efforts, raising more than$180,000. For the first time, the Young Leadership Committeeworked hand-in-hand with our Alumni Alliance on CasinoNight, bringing in more than $61,000.Families, not just students, remain an integral part of thefabric of SEEDS. As a result, our Parents Program continuedto grow: more than 300 parents attended an annual luncheonand 2,000 volunteer hours were donated by students’ familymembers. In fact, financial contributions by our parents areone of the fastest growing donor categories. More than 200students and family members again had access to free, gentlyused clothing during our Precious Passdowns Boutique (withspecial thanks to the Jack & Jill of Essex/Hudson Chapter). At the end of the day, numbers tell our story best: 100percent of our Scholars and Young Scholars were placed inexcellent schools this year. These students receivedapproximately $3.8 million in financial aid from the independentschools to continue their education, bringing the total offinancial aid SEEDS has leveraged since 2006 to $106.5 million. In addition, 100 percent of our College Preparatory studentsreceived acceptances to colleges or universities, with averageyearly financial aid packages of more than $40,000. Thesebright young people are poised to join the ranks of our trailblazingand talented alumni who continue to achieve andthrive, fulfilling the promise of the SEEDS mission. While there is much to celebrate as we mark our first 20years, there is also much yet to do. Let’s keep opening thedoors of opportunity. Together.SUSAN PRESENTChair, NJ SEEDS Board of Trustees2 | NEW JERSEY SEEDS | Changing liveS through eDuCation

MESSAGE FROMTHE PRESIDENTFor more than two decades, New Jersey SEEDS’ scholarshave defied the odds. Despite the fundamental belief that oursis a nation in which anyone who works hard can succeed andprosper, the facts say it isn’t true. This year, the Pew CharitableTrust’s Economic Mobility Project released compelling dataconfirming that, for children born to low-income parents inour country, birth is indeed destiny. “Forty-three percent ofAmericans raised in the bottom quintile remain stuck in thebottom as adults,” the report states, “and 70 percent remainbelow the middle.” The one bright finding: a four-year collegedegree promotes upward mobility so effectively that it makesa person “more than three times as likely to rise from thebottom rung of the income ladder all the way to the top.”To, literally, change the lives of low-income students,SEEDS’ three academic programs create extraordinary learningopportunities with a single shared endgame—a collegeeducation. We’ve been remarkably successful. Over the pastfive years, 99 percent of SEEDS scholars—young peoplewhose average family income hovers just below $35,000annually—have gone on to college. It is a testament to thevision of our board, the talent and commitment of the amazingSEEDS staff who are featured throughout this report, andthe confidence of more than 750 families every year whoentrust us to enrich the lives of their children. It is that trust that leads SEEDS to continually review, refineand improve every process and program in which we engage. This year, while maintaining the exceptional rigor and reach ofour academic coursework, we expanded our programmingto introduce an innovative curriculum in human behavior.Developed to give all SEEDS scholars the tools to understandand address the social, cultural and emotional challenges oftransition to independent school or college, the course buildsthe life skills that exist outside of educational content, butare equally crucial to success.Whether we call these abilities emotional intelligence, orresilience, or grit, they are the much written about characteristicsthat can make the difference between an averageperformer and a superstar. SEEDS students learn to recognizethe emotions underlying their actions and to read themotivation of others. Equally important, they develop adeep appreciation for the unique qualities that define aneffective scholar:• They know they are responsible for their own education.• They have the ability to realistically and criticallyappraise their own achievement.• They have a sense of urgency about moving alongtheir personal educational trajectory.• They recognize the importance of finding and engagingwith a community of success if they are to thrive.SEEDS too, as an organization, recognizes the critical needto work within a community of success. I am profoundlygrateful to the parents, friends and donors who appreciateand support our scholars’ incredible potential; to SEEDS’inspiring leadership team and inspired Trustees who, led byour wonderfully dedicated Chair Susan Present, make all wedo possible; and especially to the young men and womenwhose marvelous aspiration leads them to give up Saturdaysand summers for the promise of a better future. It takes acommunity—our community—to beat the odds.RONNI DENESPresident, NJ SEEDSANNUAL REPORT | FiSCal Year 2012 | 3

Our job isn’t to train scholars for a career. Instead, we teach ourstudents that they have a choice in directing their lives toward happiness, prosperity and fulfillment. At SEEDS, we show our students how todetermine what they excel at, what makes them happy and how they canapply that in their lives. I intend for each one to carry that with them.”MY MoSt MeMoraBle MoMent“Last year, my most memorable moment was our Senior Dinner. One of thebest parts of my job is that I get to see our students all year long. But oncethey are in their placement schools, they don’t get to see each other thatoften. It was really cool to watch the excitement and exuberance when thestudents reunited to share their achievements. The Alumni and Guidanceteams worked together and gave each senior the essay they had writtenfor their original SEEDS application.
