InvitationED-MEDIA 2002 – World Conference on Educational Multimedia,Hypermedia & Telecommunications is an international conference, organized by theAssociation for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE). This annual conferenceserves as a multidisciplinary forum for the discussion and exchange of informationon the research, development, and applications on all topics related to multimedia,hypermedia and telecommunications/distance education. ED-MEDIA, the premiereinternational conference in the field, spans all disciplines and levels of educationand attracts more than 1,200 attendees from over 50 countries.We invite you to attend ED-MEDIA 2002 and submit proposals for papers, panels, tutorials,workshops, posters/demonstrations, corporate demos, and SIG discussions. Eachproposal will be reviewed by three reviewers for inclusion in the conference program, proceedingsbook, and CD-ROM proceedings.Information for PresentersDetails of presentation formats are given on the following pages. The general principlesapplying to all are:➤ All communication will be with the contact presenter who is responsible forcommunicating with co-presenters of that session.➤ All presenters must register and pay the registration fee (approximately$380 members, $420 non-members (US$).➤ The conference will attempt to secure basic equipment needed for presenters.However, when special equipment cannot be obtained, presenters may need tobring or rent equipment. The name of a rental firm can be provided.ProceedingsThe Proceedings book and CD-ROM will be published by AACE. These proceedingsserve as major sources in the multimedia/hypermedia/telecommunications community,reflecting the current state of the art in the discipline. In addition, selectedpapers may be invited for publication in the Journal of Educational Multimedia andHypermedia (JEMH), International Journal on E-Learning (IJEL), or Journal ofInteractive Learning Research (JILR).Hotel & Travel ArrangementsSpecial hotel room rates will be available to conference attendees. Discount airfareswill be available from a designated airline carrier.Paper AwardsPapers present reports of significant work or integrative reviews in research, development,and applications related to educational multimedia, hypermedia andtelecommunications/distance education.All presented papers will be considered by the Program Committee forOutstanding Paper Awards. ■ FULL PAPERS (25 minutes)Submission length: full paper (4-6 pages, 2,500-3,750 words)Proceedings length: 6 pages maximumSee below for specific categories/submission requirementsSYSTEMS & RESOURCES: Papers related to projects, technical developments,systems, and resources; The paper should indicate:• whether this work is just beginning, ongoing, or completed;• the partners involved;• the major goals and the basic approach - this includes the educationalproblem addressed or the new educational opportunity created;• a brief review of previous work as a background;• a clear description of what has been developed, including schematicoverviews and screen dumps (if applicable);• any validation (usability testing, pilot testing, expert evaluation, etc.) that hastaken place;• future work and implications for others.The reference list for this kind of paper should include URLs for the work, and atleast a few literature references.CONCEPTUAL & EMPIRICAL STUDIES: Reviews, conceptual overviews, evaluationsand empirical studies; The paper should indicate:• the topic;• the motivation for the work;• the major questions addressed;• the general process and conceptual framework, with references to literature;• the concrete method, with sufficient detail on instruments and procedures;• major points or results;• implications.This paper category requires a strong and up-to-date well synthesized literature review,with work from a variety of sources (not just the research team of the author), and alsoan appropriate writing and presentation style for a scholarly review or overview.CASE STUDIES: Papers related to local experiences (e.g., a course or a prototypetested in a local situation); The paper should indicate• the most important features of the context;• a description of the problem in both local and conceptual terms;• a description of who, what, why, and how, including screen dumps if relevant;• implications for the local setting or the local prototype; and• implications for others outside the local setting.This paper category should include a reference list with relevant URLs, and a fewcitations to papers related to the local problem, but from outside the local setting.The latter is to indicate that the author can see the local situation in a broader andmore general context.OTHER: For authors who do not feel they fit in any of the above. The ProgramCommittee may request that the author revise the paper to relate to one of theabove categories, or may accept it as submitted.■ BRIEF PAPERS (15 minutes)These papers are brief, more condensed presentations or work-in-progress projects.Submission length: 2-3 pages, 1,250-1,875 wordsProceedings length: 2 pages maximum.New Developments: descriptions of new extensions to existing projects or newlyinitiated projectsProject Opportunities: descriptions of projects underway that include opportunitiesfor additional project partnersDEMONSTRATIONSOTHER: For authors who do not feel they fit in any of the above. The ProgramCommittee may request that the author revise the paper to relate to one of theabove categories, or may accept it as submitted.The abstract should clearly indicate:• what is going to be shown or demonstrated or offered;• the major aspects;• the context or motivation;• relevant URLs or literature references.■ PANELS (1 hour)A panel offers an opportunity for 3-5 people (including the chair) to present theirviews or results on a common theme, issue, or question and discuss them with theaudience. Panels should cover timely topics related to the conference areas ofinterest. Panel selection will be based on the importance, originality, focus andSubmission Informationtimeliness of the topic; expertise of proposed panelists; as well as the potential forinformative (and even controversial) discussion. A panel summary and positionstatements will be included in the proceedings. Panels must allot at least 50% ofthe time for interaction and discussion with the audience.Panel proposals must include:• a description of the panel topic, including why this topic is important toEd-Media conference attendees; 2-3 pages, 1,250-1,875 words• a brief position statement and qualifications of each panelist;• 2-3 pages, 1,250-1,875 words■ POSTERS/DEMONSTRATIONS (2 hours)Demonstration/Poster sessions enable researchers and non-commercial developersto demonstrate and discuss their latest results and developments in progressin order to gain feedback and to establish contact with similar projects. There willbe Outstanding Demonstration/Poster awards for the most successful presentationsin this category.Demonstration/Poster proposals must include:• a 2-3 page, (1,250-1,875 words) written description of the planned demonstration/posterand should emphasize the problem, what was done, and whythe work is importantDemonstration/Poster presenters will be required to arrange for their own systemssoftware and hardware. The Conference will provide a table, poster board and electricityfor each presenter.■ TUTORIALS & WORKSHOPS (3 or 6 hours)Tutorials and Workshops are intended to enhance the skills and broaden the perspectiveof their attendees. They should be designed to introduce a rigorous framework for learninga new area or to provide advanced technical training in an area. Submissions will beselected on the basis of the instructors’ qualifications for teaching the proposed tutorialor workshop and their contribution to the overall conference program. Workshops differfrom tutorials by involving hands-on experience with hardware/software provided.Note that few workshops are selected because a lab of equipment is required foreach. If you submit a workshop proposal, please indicate if your proposal is alsoappropriate for presentation as a non-hands on tutorial.Tutorial/Workshop proposals must include:• a clear description of the objectives• the intended audience (experience level and prerequisites)• the proposed length (3 hours or 6 hours)• a 200-word abstract• a 1-page topical outline of the content• a summary of the instructor’s qualifications■ CORPORATE SHOWCASES (30 minutes) &DEMONSTRATIONS (2 hours)Demonstrate and discuss your company's products, services, developments, applicationsand research, inform the audience of your future directions, gain feedback,and establish contacts. Not included in the Proceedings.Showcase Format: 30-minute presentation scheduled during concurrent sessions;Presentation rooms generally accommodate 50-150 people, theatre-style. This ismore of a formal presentation than the Corporate Demonstration.Demonstration Format: 2 hours; scheduled with Poster/Demonstrations grouped togetherin open exhibition-style, usually all in one hall. This is an informal event with a circulatingaudience. Sales are permitted: You may stock and sell your product at your table.Corporate proposals must include a brief description (1 paragraph) of what youintend to present.SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTSSubmit all proposals by completing the Web format: http://www.aace.org/conf/edmediaAll proposals must be submitted by uploading PDF, Word, RTF, orPostscript file using the Web form.
