■ FULL PAPERS (25 minutes)Submission length: full paper (4-6 pages, 2,500-3,750 words)Proceedings length: 6 pages maximumSee below <strong>for</strong> specific categories/submission requirementsSYSTEMS & RESOURCES: Papers related to projects, technical developments,systems, and resources; The paper should indicate:• whe<strong>the</strong>r this work is just beginning, ongoing, or completed;• <strong>the</strong> partners involved;• <strong>the</strong> major goals and <strong>the</strong> basic approach - this includes <strong>the</strong> educationalproblem addressed or <strong>the</strong> new educational opportunity created;• a brief review of previous work as a background;• a clear description of what has been developed, including schematicoverviews and screen dumps (if applicable);• any validation (usability testing, pilot testing, expert evaluation, etc.) that hastaken place;• future work and implications <strong>for</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs.The reference list <strong>for</strong> this kind of paper should include URLs <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> work, and atleast a few literature references.CONCEPTUAL & EMPIRICAL STUDIES: Reviews, conceptual overviews, evaluationsand empirical studies; The paper should indicate:• <strong>the</strong> topic;• <strong>the</strong> motivation <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> work;• <strong>the</strong> major questions addressed;• <strong>the</strong> general process and conceptual framework, with references to literature;• <strong>the</strong> concrete method, with sufficient detail on instruments and procedures;• major points or results;• implications.This paper category requires a strong and up-to-date well syn<strong>the</strong>sized literature review,with work from a variety of sources (not just <strong>the</strong> research team of <strong>the</strong> author), and alsoan appropriate writing and presentation style <strong>for</strong> a scholarly review or overview.CASE STUDIES: Papers related to local experiences (e.g., a course or a prototypetested in a local situation); The paper should indicate• <strong>the</strong> most important features of <strong>the</strong> context;• a description of <strong>the</strong> problem in both local and conceptual terms;• a description of who, what, why, and how, including screen dumps if relevant;• implications <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> local setting or <strong>the</strong> local prototype; and• implications <strong>for</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs outside <strong>the</strong> local setting.This paper category should include a reference list with relevant URLs, and a fewcitations to papers related to <strong>the</strong> local problem, but from outside <strong>the</strong> local setting.The latter is to indicate that <strong>the</strong> author can see <strong>the</strong> local situation in a broader andmore general context.OTHER: For authors who do not feel <strong>the</strong>y fit in any of <strong>the</strong> above. The ProgramCommittee may request that <strong>the</strong> author revise <strong>the</strong> paper to relate to one of <strong>the</strong>above categories, or may accept it as submitted.■ BRIEF PAPERS (15 minutes)These papers are brief, more condensed presentations or work-in-progress projects.Submission length: 2-3 pages, 1,250-1,875 wordsProceedings length: 2 pages maximum.New Developments: descriptions of new extensions to existing projects or newlyinitiated projectsProject Opportunities: descriptions of projects underway that include opportunities<strong>for</strong> additional project partnersDEMONSTRATIONSOTHER: For authors who do not feel <strong>the</strong>y fit in any of <strong>the</strong> above. The ProgramCommittee may request that <strong>the</strong> author revise <strong>the</strong> paper to relate to one of <strong>the</strong>above categories, or may accept it as submitted.The abstract should clearly indicate:• what is going to be shown or demonstrated or offered;• <strong>the</strong> major aspects;• <strong>the</strong> context or motivation;• relevant URLs or literature references.■ PANELS (1 hour)A panel offers an opportunity <strong>for</strong> 3-5 people (including <strong>the</strong> chair) to present <strong>the</strong>irviews or results on a common <strong>the</strong>me, issue, or question and discuss <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong>audience. Panels should cover timely topics related to <strong>the</strong> conference areas ofinterest. Panel selection will be based on <strong>the</strong> importance, originality, focus andSubmission In<strong>for</strong>mationtimeliness of <strong>the</strong> topic; expertise of proposed panelists; as well as <strong>the</strong> potential <strong>for</strong>in<strong>for</strong>mative (and even controversial) discussion. A panel summary and positionstatements will be included in <strong>the</strong> proceedings. Panels must allot at least 50% of<strong>the</strong> time <strong>for</strong> interaction and discussion with <strong>the</strong> audience.Panel proposals must include:• a description of <strong>the</strong> panel topic, including why this topic is important toEd-Media conference attendees; 2-3 pages, 1,250-1,875 words• a brief position statement and qualifications of each panelist;• 2-3 pages, 1,250-1,875 words■ POSTERS/DEMONSTRATIONS (2 hours)Demonstration/Poster sessions enable researchers and non-commercial developersto demonstrate and discuss <strong>the</strong>ir latest results and developments in progressin order to gain feedback and to establish contact with similar projects. There willbe Outstanding Demonstration/Poster awards <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> most successful presentationsin this category.Demonstration/Poster proposals must include:• a 2-3 page, (1,250-1,875 words) written description of <strong>the</strong> planned demonstration/posterand should emphasize <strong>the</strong> problem, what was done, and why<strong>the</strong> work is importantDemonstration/Poster presenters will be required to arrange <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own systemssoftware and hardware. The Conference will provide a table, poster board and electricity<strong>for</strong> each presenter.■ TUTORIALS & WORKSHOPS (3 or 6 hours)Tutorials and Workshops are intended to enhance <strong>the</strong> skills and broaden <strong>the</strong> perspectiveof <strong>the</strong>ir attendees. They should be designed to introduce a rigorous framework <strong>for</strong> learninga new area or to provide advanced technical training in an area. Submissions will beselected on <strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong> instructors’ qualifications <strong>for</strong> teaching <strong>the</strong> proposed tutorialor workshop and <strong>the</strong>ir contribution to <strong>the</strong> overall conference program. Workshops differfrom tutorials by involving hands-on experience with hardware/software provided.Note that few workshops are selected because a lab of equipment is required <strong>for</strong>each. If you submit a workshop proposal, please indicate if your proposal is alsoappropriate <strong>for</strong> presentation as a non-hands on tutorial.Tutorial/Workshop proposals must include:• a clear description of <strong>the</strong> objectives• <strong>the</strong> intended audience (experience level and prerequisites)• <strong>the</strong> proposed length (3 hours or 6 hours)• a 200-word abstract• a 1-page topical outline of <strong>the</strong> content• a summary of <strong>the</strong> instructor’s qualifications■ CORPORATE SHOWCASES (30 minutes) &DEMONSTRATIONS (2 hours)Demonstrate and discuss your company's products, services, developments, applicationsand research, in<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> audience of your future directions, gain feedback,and establish contacts. Not included in <strong>the</strong> Proceedings.Showcase Format: 30-minute presentation scheduled during concurrent sessions;Presentation rooms generally accommodate 50-150 people, <strong>the</strong>atre-style. This ismore of a <strong>for</strong>mal presentation than <strong>the</strong> Corporate Demonstration.Demonstration Format: 2 hours; scheduled with Poster/Demonstrations grouped toge<strong>the</strong>rin open exhibition-style, usually all in one hall. This is an in<strong>for</strong>mal event with a circulatingaudience.
