President’s MessageI’d like to share with you my remarks from the recent Annual Congregational Meeting, since somany of you missed it. Looking back over the past year, there are so many successes we can beproud of. One need only review our bulletins to get a sense of how vibranta community the Congregation of Moses is. Let’s start with the bulletin. It’s gorgeous! Cindy Beer has amazed us month after month with a veryattractive and informative bulletin. It’s just a shame that we aren’t sharingit with the whole city. While the quality of the Kalamazoo Gazette hasdeclined, the quality of our bulletin has soared!Bagel SundaysThe list of activities in the last year is amazing! We had two barbeques: one at the annualfundraiser and talent show and the other at the new Eat, Pray, Play event on a Friday night.Camp Keshet was a hit last summer, and there are already 20 kids signed up so far for thissummer. We celebrated 50 years in this building with an outstanding Black and White dance. The album full of remembrances located in the lobby beautifully captures our history. Speakingof the lobby, our new furniture has fostered an inviting place for meetings and conversation. Theaddition of an electronic screen, made possible by contributions in honor of Stan Besbris’s (z’l)90th birthday, has enhanced synagogue communication. Also in our lobby is the newly cleanedand repaired Holocaust Torah in a refurbished display case.In the fall, our Marvin and Rosalie Okun Religious School made a smooth transition to atwo-day a week curriculum under the guidance of our principal, Susan Welbourne, wonderfulteachers, and Joyce Camhi, who goes above and beyond her volunteer role as religious schoolchairperson. Rabbi Naomi Levy was our Torah Weekend scholar, which inspired congregants toread her books and led to a community book discussion. The library had an Open House withguest puppeteer Marilyn Price. We had a sukkah hop, a Scared Music Festival concert with YaleStrom and the Burdick-Thorne Quartet, and our first interfaith couples dialogue. In the spring we were treated to another concert of classical music by Stefan Koch, whoperformed rediscovered works composed by Richard Stohr. We also had a new Purim play andwere pleasantly surprised to count many Temple B’nai Israel members among the audience.Ongoing throughout the year were Rabbi’s classes in Essential Jewish Ideas and From Bible toSynagogue, Bagel Sundays, and yoga and Zumba classes. All this was accomplished by a small but dedicated group of individuals. It reminds me of the oilthat lasted for eight days. It is something of a miracle that we can accomplish so much with sofew volunteers. When the Governance Committee began searching for people to fill vacancies inour leadership, it was heartwarming that so many fine people accepted candidacies. I am gratefulfor my Executive Committee — Liz Siegel and Tema Lando, Cathy Cheron, Diane Fogel, EdGoldenthal, Shirley Wise, Ken Goodman, Arlen Rubin and the Rabbi — who have supportedme this year. We are very fortunate to have Shirley Mengel and Rod Anderson as our longtimeand very dedicated staff. I thank God for their loyalty and hard work over so many, many yearsof service. Finally, I must thank my husband Earl for all he does to allow me to spend so manyhours on synagogue business.Tamara NormanPresidentPAGE 7

Rabbi’s MessageOne of the outstanding features of our High Holiday services is that several of our members leadparts of the morning service and read Torah and Haftarah. You can be a prayer leader, too. If you are able to read Hebrew, then learning a brief section of themorning service is a not-too-difficult summer project. If you think you might be interested, pleaselet me know. I’ll tell you exactly what’s involved and you can decide if this is for you.We also look for new people to read a Haftarah or Torah reading. If you have some experience ineither, then you can consider taking this route to becoming one of our High Holiday leaders. The Congregation of Moses approach is: the more participation the better!
