Include a check for the application fee.D. This entire portion can be done on line if you prefer - and be advised that most collegesdo prefer the online option.II. "Teacher Evaluation" or "Teacher Recommendation" sectionA. Fill out the Request for College Recommendation.B. Include written instructions (e.g., "Please give to Mrs. Skiba by Oct. 15").C. Enter teachers' names into your Naviance account.D. Give to two teachers by end of September.III. "School Report" or "Counselor Report," “Teacher Evaluation” and "Midyear Report"A. Lose these.B. WT, like most independent schools, has its own secondary school report and midyearreport forms.IV. The Final StepsA. Have ETS send official reports of your SATs to each college to which you are applying -this should be done at least four weeks before the application deadline. You can dothis on line or by phone. You must have your scores sent by ETS in order for themto be official; scores are not reported on your Winchester Thurston transcript willnot be accepted as official by most colleges if sent by any other source than ETS.B. Fill out a WT Secondary School Report (SSR) and a Pink Sheet for each college towhich you are applying.C. Add the colleges to your Naviance account.D. Hand the SSRs and Pink Sheets to the Mrs. Skiba.After applyingI would like everyone to be aware of a problem that all too often arises.A student creates the checklist (the pink sheet) of what is to be sent to each college; then Mrs.Skiba highlights on this sheet the items that she hands me along with the envelope; I then checkonce again to see that everything requested on the pink sheet is actually in the envelope. I seal theenvelope and we run it through the postage machine. Then the colleges, who are attempting tomanage staggering amounts of paper in this process, lose something, most often the transcript,rarely a recommendation, essay or other enclosure, almost never the check.If this happens, (sometimes they'll send you a postcard, sometimes they call or e-mail); do notpanic. Just let me know and I'll send or fax it again. The pink sheet provides a clear record of your17
equest as well as the contents and date of the envelope that was sent, and we can share this withthe college to ensure that they realize you observed any deadline in question.The moral of the story is that it is a very good idea for you wait till about two weeks after theapplication has been mailed, and then to check either online or by telephone to make sure thatall your applications are complete and ready to be reviewed.Wait ListingIf a college or university places you on its waitlist, there are four actions you should take:1. You should follow the college’s instructions to the letter in terms of informing themwhether you wish to remain on the waitlist or not. Sometimes this involves returning apostcard, going online, or writing a letter.2. If the college is your first-choice school you should let them know immediately in writingthat if you are admitted you will enroll and attend.3. If you did an alumni interview for the college in question, contact the person whointerviewed you and ask if (s)he would contact the institution on your behalf again.4. Share with the college any substantive news about yourself. This could include new awardsyou’ve received, any accomplishments since the mid-year report, a recent writing sample(such as a senior paper), and second-trimester grades.Financial AidDefinition of Terms and Sources of Financial Aid InformationGrants: awarded on the basis of need, grant money does not need to be repaid. Sourcesinclude Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants(FSEOG), state grants, and academic grants.Loans: generally awarded to “families with some means,” sources include Federal PerkinsLoan, Federal Stafford Loan, Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS),and third-party educational loan programs.Employment: includes Federal Work-Study, campus wage-payroll employment, off-campusemployment.Scholarships: awarded on the basis of academic promise (“merit”), sources includeindividual colleges and universities (separate applications are often required).
