Standing, CBLT staff and board members, Ann Johnston, Lowry Smith,Peter Kennel, Jeff Hermanson, Dan McElroy, Keith Bauer, Fred Holbrook, David Baxter and Heather Duryea.A Tree for PhilanthropyAs part of the ongoing 10thanniversary celebration of the LowerLoop Trail and Recreation Area, CBLTrecently honored the couple who wasinstrumental to the success of thisambitious conservation project.In 1999, Jack and MarilynMacAllister provided CBLT a generouschallenge grant to facilitate the purchaseand re-opening of the Lower Loop Trail.Their donation spurred matching giftsfrom individuals and foundations. Inaddition, CBLT partnered with public,private and governmental entities fora truly effective collaboration whichresulted in a major community amenity.Last October, CBLT boardand staff members commemorated thephilanthropy of the MacAllisters byplanting a Blue Spruce in their honorin one of the wooded meadows alongthe Lower Loop. The MacAllisters,along with their son and one of theirgrandaughters, attended the planting anddedication ceremony.The Lower Loop is the greatconnector between where we live andwork and where we recreate and renew.The natural lands, inspirational viewsof Paradise Divide, the diverse wildlifehabitat, and the year-round recreationalopportunities of the Lower Loop definethe Crested Butte experience for manyresidents and visitors.With deepest gratitude, CBLTrecognizes Jack and Marilyn MacAllisterfor their defining role to protect andpreserve the Lower Loop forever.Trail volunteer & CBLT board member, Fred Holbrook.Photo by Kim Carroll BoslerPhoto by Ann JohnstonWoods Walk Work DayOn a beautiful, sunny Sundayafternoon last October, CBLT joinedthe Crested Butte Mountain BikeAssociation (CBMBA) to repair andmaintain the Teocalli Connector sectionof the Woods Walk Trail. Providingaccess directly from town to wilderness,the Woods Walk Trail is easily one of themost used sections of the Lower LoopTrail and Recreation Area frequented byhikers, runners, dog walkers, bikers andcross country skiers.The final trail day projectof the season organized by CBMBAattracted trail enthusiasts of all ages.About 25 volunteers worked to repairthe damage done over time by trail usersand erosion. Volunteers included CBLTboard members Jeff Hermanson, FredHolbrook and Keith Bauer, as well asAnn Johnston and Heather Duryea fromthe CBLT staff.The repaired section of trailis part of the conservation easementgenerously donated to the community byLand Trust President, Jeff Hermanson.Jeff has described the Woods Walk Trailand the Lower Loop as “one of thegreatest community amenities of CrestedButte and a great accomplishment of theCrested Butte Land Trust.”Thanks to all the hard-workingvolunteers who helped to maintain thisbeloved single track trail.Volunteer, Dave Smith, on the Woods Walk Trail Day.Photo by Ann Johnston
