In 1966, the government of Israel gave Raoul agreat honor. They named him “Righteous Among theNations.” He was honored for helping to save so manyJews. Still, most people in the world did not learnabout his life until 1980. A year later, the United Statesmade him an honorary citizen. Only one other personhas ever received this honor.Raoul Wallenberg stood up to a brutal enemy.He showed that one person’s courage could make abig difference.13
Other RescuersMore than 20,000 non-Jewish people — likeRaoul Wallenberg — have been honored as“Righteous Among the Nations.” All of them riskedtheir lives to save Jews from the Nazis. Only oneAmerican woman, Martha Sharp, has receivedthis honor.Martha Sharp was a social worker. She and herhusband saved hundreds of Jews from the Nazis. Theyalso helped people who spoke out against the Nazis.Raoul, the Sharps, and others like them savedthousands of Jews. Still, theNazis killed about 6 millionJews during the war. Thenumber saved may seemsmall, compared to thosewho died. Yet, who canmeasure the importance ofsaving even just one life?Jeanne Rogalle received the“Righteous Among the Nations”medal in 2005 for helping Jewishfamilies escape in 1942.14
