Research under this Theme contributes to the implementation 

of relevant international commitments , protocols and 

initiatives concluded by the European Union and Member 

States. In addition, it will support the research needs arising 

from existing and emerging EU environmental legislation and 

policies , and the implementation of the 6th Environmental 

Action Programme, associated thematic strategies and the 

action plans .

Space Program 

Area 1: Pre-operational validation of GMES services and products 

SPA.2007.1.1.1 Development of upgraded capabilities for existing GMES Fast- 

Track Services and related (pre)operational services 

Recent developments through EU, ESA and national programmes have resulted in 

(pre)operational services in several application fields, in particular the three Fast Track 

Services (FTS) in the following three domains (each 20-30 MEuro) : 

- Land Monitoring 

- Marine Core Service 

- Emergency Response. 

Activity to be addressed 

• Data validation and fusion from multiple sources; techniques for data assimilation into models. 

• Observation data (satellite, in-situ) collection and delivery, under consideration of both organisational 

aspects, as well as technical solutions offered by state-of-the-art communication methods (via terrestrial or 

satellite communication channels). 

• Interoperability and interconnection of the data processing and delivery systems, taking into account 

harmonisation policies, directives such as INSPIRE 

• Organisation and service architecture, including the direct involvement of those GMES stakeholders that can 

provide core-services, in particular relevant public organisations (both national and international). 

• Feedback from relevant institutional end-users, which demonstrates both the acceptance level of the 

prototypical service, as well as scenarios for integration into the user working methods and resulting 

decision-making processes. 

• Exploration of suitable modalities for agreement processes between service mandating authorities, service 

providers and end-users

CIRCE aims at developing for the first time an assessment of the 

climate change impacts in the Mediterranean area.

The project will investigate how global and Mediterranean climates 

interact, how the radiative properties of the atmosphere and the 

radiative fluxes vary, the interaction between cloudiness and 

aerosol, the modifications in the water cycle. 

The economic and social consequences of climate change shall be 

evaluated by analyzing direct impacts on migration, tourism and 

energy markets together with indirect impacts on the economic 

system. CIRCE will moreover investigate the consequences on 

agriculture, forests and ecosystems, human health and air quality. 

The variability of extreme events in the future scenario and their 

impacts will be assessed. 

The integrated results discussed by the project CIRCE will be 

presented in the first Regional Assessment of Climate Change in the 

Mediterranean area.

Una Grande sfida, non piu’ rinviabile.

La Missione del Centro 

Sviluppare e approfondire le nostre conoscenze nel campo della 

variabilità climatica, le sue cause e le sue conseguenze, con una 

speciale enfasi sullo sviluppo di simulazioni ad alta risoluzione. La 

ricerca includerà temi come lo studio delle teleconnessioni tropicaliextratropicali, 

della variabilità decennale e interannuale del clima e 

studi fondamentali sulle proprietà della circolazione generale. 

Mettere a disposizione della comunità scientifica nazionale 

prodotti di alta qualità e quindi di fare ricerca allo scopo di 

garantire il continuo aumento della qualità ed affidabilità dei 

prodotti, svolgendo anche una funzione di supporto tecnicoscientifico, 

con un gruppo adeguato destinato al supporto utenti, sia in 

termini di tecnico che in termini di expertise sull’uso e sviluppo di 

modelli numerici. 

I prodotti del CMCC sono modelli, simulazioni, software 

applicativi e attivita’ di formazione di personale di alta qualificazione 

sia nel campo specifico della dinamica del clima, sia in quello delle 

tecnologie informatiche.


1. Sviluppa, verifica e mantiene modelli documentati di simulazione 

climatica. 

• un modello globale di simulazione del sistema terra ad alta risoluzione, che includa 

l’atmosfera, l’oceano, i ghiacci marini, la biosfera terrestre e gli ecosistemi marini, accoppiato 

ad un modello ad alta risoluzione del Mar Mediterraneo, suscettibile di essere utilizzato per la 

produzione di scenari del clima futuro e per la simulazione della variabilità del clima a scale 

interannuali e decadali; 

• simulazioni climatiche di lungo periodo; 

• ensembles di qualità controllata; 

• suite di modelli di simulazione dell’impatto socioeconomico dei cambiamenti climatici. 

• impatti sull’agricoltura e sui sistemi forestali naturali. 

2. Mantiene e documenta data sets per lo studio della variabilità 

climatica e per la validazione dei modelli di simulazione (da osservazioni 

e da simulazioni numeriche). 

3. Mantiene un servizio di supporto utenti teso a fornire consulenza per 

l’uso efficiente dei sistemi, dei modelli e dei dati del Centro. 

4. Mette a disposizione risorse informatiche alla comunità scientifica. 

5. Svolge attività di formazione, ricerca e promozione delle attività di 

ricerca. 

6. Svolge attività di supporto scientifico per le Amministrazioni.
