The completedtasks should also be kept in the learner portfolio. All evidence of learner engagementcould be kept as evidence in the portfolio.Step 6: Reporting on learner performanceIt may be necessary from time to time for teachers to report on learner progress based oneor more formal assessment tasks contained in the learner portfolio. In such cases a teachershould mention the following: The form of assessment used The level at which the learner attained the relevant outcomes Comments on learner achievement for all Learning Outcomes (LOs) – developed fromthe AS's showing what the learner is competent in and where there are gaps. The time period for the assessment taskFor the purposes of reporting, the teacher may also want to convert the mark from anindividual formal assessment task to the 7-point rating scale (for the Senior Phase) and4-point scale (for Intermediate Phase) described in the National Policy on Assessment andQualifications (see Annexure 5 for an example of how to do this).Step 7: ReflectReflect on the learning process and follow up with interventions where necessary. Iflearners are experiencing serious difficulties in achieving the Assessment Standards, youmay need to seek additional support with follow-up interventions. Reflect on how thelearners performed and why. Adjust your teaching and assessment accordingly. Follow-upinterventions may include: Creating more opportunities for learning Giving learners more examples Building on prior activities Giving learners more exercises to achieve certain skillsReflect on your practice and consider if the form of assessment and tools you usedgathered the evidence you wanted to gather.3.7 Management of AssessmentEach school should have a School Assessment Programme, which outlines how CASS is plannedand implemented. It includes:● How records are kept, stored and accessed● Assessment codes● Internal verification● Moderation● Frequency and method of reporting● Monitoring of assessment processes● Training of staff18
Natural SciencesEach teacher should also have a formal programme of assessment for the year, which is derivedfrom the Work Schedules and indicate the details of assessment per grade (see section 3.5.2). Thisis in turn used to draw up a School Assessment Plan, which is a compilation of all the teachers'Assessment Plans.19
