EDITORIALOur award winning magazine (also published nowadays on www.maristsports.com)is enjoyed by over 1,000 Manawatu families associated with our sports club. It has nowexisted for over a third of a century. From its humble beginnings with efforts from our Patron David Healy, assisted by ayoung Rugby Club Captain called Peter Gillespie, the edition then grew under the guidanceof Life Member Robin O’Neill, before he cleverly trapped the current editor. After twodecades the Editor changed to our now retired Executive Officer Ezra Drury who lifted thequality of the magazine, before handing back the duties to myself. The Green & Gold Times, not only records our many successful deliveries of sport to3,200 Palmerstonians, but is a vehicle to recognise our administrators, coaches, managers, supporters and sponsors. Well done everyone on a brilliant 2012!CheersPaul O'BrienCLUB CHAPLAINThe weeks leading up to Christmas can be either a time ofmeaningful preparation for one of the most important Christianfestivals or a frantic and pressured time during which we haveno time to reflect on its meaning and significance. The choiceis ours! The well known saying “Put Christ back into Christmas” makesus think about how much attention we give to the real meaningof the season. In His birth we reflect on the great mystery ofGod’s unconditional love for us in sending his Son and howthrough Him we come to a new and greater life.Congratulations to everyone associated with Marist Sportson another fantastic year of facilitating and enjoying sport as animportant facet of life.May you all have a very blessed and holy Christmas!Fr. SENIOR RUGBYPresident’s Report 2012This was a mixed year for Old Boys Marist. We lost one Colts team because of numbersright at the start of the season thus limiting us to just the Colts Premiers. Fortunately wehad the numbers for the premier team and overall they did quite well making the semifinals. However, it was gut wrenching at the beginning of the season to have to send 6– 7 young guys off to one of the Varsity teams because we just did not have the playersto make up two complete teams. As with all competition teams you need the reservenumbers sufficient to fill places once injuries and unavailability for one reason or anotherkick in.It was somewhat ironic that about four weeks out from the season start we had ampleColts numbers turn up for practice and things were looking pretty good. Unfortunately aweek prior to the start a lot of those guys just never came back. From what I understandthey never played for another club, they just decided rugby was not for them this year andpulled the plug.I have noticed this occurring on more than one occasion throughout the past years of myassociation with rugby. It seems there are two distinct groups of young men now-a-days;those who wish to play full competition and get as far as they can in the game with fullcommitment to training and all that goes with it, then on the other side there are thosewho wish only to play ‘social’ rugby with no training whatsoever, just turn up on Saturdayand see what happens. There seems a definite lack of middle ground in the under 21 rugbyplaying culture. This is something the club may have to address in the future. The senior team also had their woes although from a completely different perspective. We literally lost the whole of the 2011 senior first back line at the beginning of the year.Player retirement, players moving to other areas, players suffering long term injuries anddare I say it, the loss of key players to other local clubs. It seems a sad reality that in theworld of today’s players the clubs, coaches and managers have the added burden at thestart of each year of seeing who has swapped clubs, for whatever reason. Unfortunatelythere is very little, in fact in most cases, no warning whatsoever from the player concernedthat he has decided to move to another club. Indeed the first the coach and club seem tohear about it is when the ‘other’ club files a team registration with the union. We werelucky in that we had John Fisher and Lee Waller along with Mike Rusher who were able todraft in from last year’s senior seconds and colts teams plus recruit from out of district toreplace those we lost. Under the circumstances the team performed extremely well andcongratulations must go to both team and management. If we can hold this team togetherthe future looks indeed promising. However, player retention is something the club mustbe aware of and consider in the future. The senior second team, always the backstop and mainstay of any club, was no differentwith Old Boys Marist. This group is always competitive and it was pleasing to see thenumbers return this year. A great team of guys who play and mix well together and weare fortunate indeed that after the amalgamation the seconds have remained reasonablyflux with numbers as well as maintaining the level of ability with young colts progressingupwards and older senior first players stepping down a grade but continuing with the9

game. The seconds are always a difficult team to coach and manage in that players areconstantly being required to play or reserve in the senior firsts. In reality the coach cannotsay for certain exactly who he will have available from one week to the next. We have beenblessed in that our coaches appreciate this and make allowances for the interchange. Thiswas no more evident this year and my appreciation and thanks to Cadz, Freshie and Grantfor their co-operation and flexibility.I did have high hopes that we would have two senior reserve grade teams this year, especially after the demise of the second colt’s team. Unfortunately this was not to bewith numbers just falling short of the required benchmark. The reserve team is basically asemi social team. They were led by Kane and Steady who put a lot of time and effort eachweekend and it is credit to them that we were able to front a full team each Saturday. Thisteam desperately needed a manager to assist this year and this again is something the clubwill need to address next year. The Presidents team had problems of a different sort this year. On paper player numberswere sufficient, however, on a lot of occasions only 13 or sometimes just 12 players wouldfront on a Saturday. This makes a frustrating day for the team manager especially whenindications are that a full team and reserves are available prior to the day. Good mannerssuggest that if you do not intend playing then a simple phone call or text to the managerallows sufficient time to make alternative arrangements. There are guys out there whosimply want to play social rugby and will make themselves available but the managerneeds to know. The OBM committee worked extremely well under the guidance of Chairman MarkGleeson this year and I thank him in particular for his never ending efforts. The officeholders all performed exceptionally well and it has been a pleasure this year to see thatefficiency and willingness performed week after week. I can honestly say that everyone onthe committee put their hand up and assisted in the running of the club and again I thankeach of you for your assistance.Unfortunately there are going to be some retirements and a couple of those people willbe sorely missed with no one more so than Sue Curtis our treasurer. Finding a replacementfor Sue will not be an easy task, we are extremely sorry to see her go but Sue we thank youfor your efforts over the years and wish you all the very best for the future.I would also like to take the opportunity of thanking all the committee for their loyaltyand support to myself over the past years. It is also time for me to step aside being nowwell and truly passed the ‘use by date’. I thank the club for the support, the friendship andfor giving me the interest in this our game over the past years which I thought I had lostwhen the playing stopped. I wish the new incoming President, all the committee and youthe club members all the very best for the future and no doubt we shall see you on thesidelines or in the clubrooms.Jim LyonsPresident OBM RFC11

Chairman's Report 2012This is my first Report as “Old Boys Marist Rugby Club” Chairman. As always running an amateur Rugby Club in the current age of professionalism ischallenging and although we put one less team on the field this year I believe we stillprovided an excellent environment for our players to be part of. To some success isdirectly related to the “Cups” in the cabinet at the end of the season and while we striveto win Competitions every year , sometimes this is not possible for a variety of reasons.Over the past couple of years it has been extremely disappointing to lose Senior Playersto other Clubs and this has had a detrimental effect to the player experience of the sidesat this level. As a Club we have made a commitment not to provide inducements to retain playersand I believe in the long term this will reap rewards for the Club and this Policy should beretained for the future.I would like to congratulate the Senior Seconds and Colts Teams for making theirrespective semi-Finals, unfortunately both had to travel to Kimbolton to make the finaland lost tight matches.I would like to commend the Senior Side under the guidance of John Fisher and LeeWaller for the tenacity and pride they showed in almost every game this season. As ayoung side they promise much for the future. The Club will be working hard to developthis group. The Senior 3rds and Presidents Teams both had an enjoyable season although thePresidents were a bit short of numbers. Both these teams contributed greatly to the“spirit” of the Club and it is important we continue to support these teams in the future.Special thanks must go to all the Coaches, Managers and support staff for their selflesscontributions in making these teams run smoothly and I am sure our Club Captain willconcur he had the most enjoyable season yet working with you all.The committee this year was full of familiar faces. We welcomed Brenna Fisher as theClub Secretary and she did a fine job collating the minutes that previously had been doneby other office-bearers.To all Committee members, many thanks for your contributions and for the excellentattendance and input you gave at our meetings. It is important that special praise must be given to our “Club Captain” (and Caterer) PhilMetcalf who continues to do way more than his share.12

Thanks also to Jim Lyons our President who is seeking retirement. Jim committedhimself to a lot more duties than intended and was a great ally for me in my first year asChairman. Also thanks to the Finance Committee who have the onerous task of making thenumbers work and Balance at the end of the year. Sue Curtis is stepping down this yearand I would like to thank her for the many hours of work she has put into her role to makesure the Club operates within its financial budgets. The Committee is ageing quickly and it is a major concern that it is extremely difficult toget our young members to put their hand up to take on such a role. We must work hard onour members to contribute in the very near future , otherwise the future of the Club will beunder scrutiny. As they say “many hands make light work’ and we need to get more peopleinvolved to spread the workload so the roles can be more enjoyable and less onerous onany one individual. We also need younger people to bring their enthusiasm and new ideasto the Club to keep it progressing in the future.Finances for the season were basically kept to budgets and in this current environmentwhere everything costs , it was an excellent result. While the Balance Sheet has improvedthis have mainly been through a prudent build up of Gear and Equipment for futureseasons. This will be explained in more detail in the Finance Report.Special Thanks must be made to the “Endeavour” and “NZ Community Trusts” for theirgreat support of the Club this season. Also thanks to Phil Monk for his ongoing role in the Sponsorship area which is vital tothe Club’s Income and financial viability. This funding has been vital to the Club but cannotbe relied upon every year and the incoming Committee must look at raising revenue fromother streams. From me personally, I thank you all for your support this season as I managed thisrole in between other commitment’s. While running a Rugby Club at times is extremelyfrustrating we must be proud of what we achieve each year and I would consider our Clubmuch more fortunate than others, especially with the quality of people and facilities thatwe have.Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you all with renewed enthusiasm in2013.Mark GleesonChairmanOBM RFC13

Club Captain Report For OBM 20122012 has been another good year for the club. We contested in all grades except thewoman’s grade and had good numbers for all of our 5 teams.Sadly we had to let 10 guys go to another club, as we were unable to form two colt’steams due to school holidays being so close to the starting of the colt’s competition. All of our grades had a core of 22 guys plus extras when everyone one fit. The Presidentswere the only team that struggled for numbers at times but they did OBM proud be stillplaying every week.I would like to thank all the Coaches, Managers and support staff for the smoothestyear I have ever had being a Club Captain everyone was a pleasure to work with and mostcommunication between teams went smoothly. I know everyone involved puts in a hugeamount of time and energy. The Senior B and Colts were both semi finalists going down in close games in Kimbolton. The Senior Reserves finished 5th in a very competitive grade and the Presidentsrepresented the club well in their grade. The Senior A’s won the Val Holland cup and kept the trophy cabinet full with wins overboth Fielding clubs and Kia Toa.We had a very young teams and the development was huge within our club so the futureis looking good.I would like to congratulate Chris Long for making the Canadian national team, ReeseRobinson, Antonio Kiri Kiri , Shaun Curry for making the Turbos. Also well represented in the Manawatu Under 20’s Dan Law, Isaac Gulliver, LiamNicholls, James Dunlop, Ben Edwards,.To finish off on behalf of the players coaches and managers I would like to thankall the Sponsors, OBM Board and the Manawatu Rugby Union staff for making thisyear possible.Phil MetcalfClub Captain14

Senior 1stsThis year the Senior first squad went through a rebuilding phase with some of last yearsplayers playing overseas and a couple who decided to play at other clubs, this meant theteam was young in age with 9 of the initial starting 15 eligible to play under 20's but withthe coaching of John Fisher and Lee Waller there was no doubt they were going to learnfast.First round was a mixture of performances as combinations were honing their skills, culminating in a great win over Kia Toa at the end of the round which was our performanceof the year. Unfortunately we ended the second round in 6th spot after losing to FOBOand Kia's which were must win games to make the top four.We then went on to play for the Val Holland trophy which we met and beat FOBO in thefinal. This was a fitting end to what had been a season of learning for many of the youngerplayers.Again it was great to see 3 of our Senior players selected for the Turbos being, ReeceRobinson, Antonio Kiri Kiri and Shaun Curry and also 5 of the squad made the Manawatuunder 20's.We would like to thank all the supporters and club for their support during the year andlook forward to an exciting year next year with most of the 2011 squad returning.15

Colts Premier 2012The 2012 season was one of mixed fortunes for the Colts Premier team. Things got offto a poor start as the team struggled with the uncertainty as to whether there were goingto be two teams entered in the competition. Right up until days before the first game wehad a large number of players practising with the team even though the Premier team hadbeen named.Sadly we were only able to field the one team and some players had to be cut.Unfortunately we struck eventual finalists Massey White first up, a game we simplyweren't adequately prepared for, the final result being a 37 to 7 loss with Massey pullingaway in the second half. The team came together nicely after the first game and began stringing some winstogether until crucial loss against Kia Toa threatened our chances of making the top fourplay offs.At this stage of the season the team had two hard fought victories over competitionleaders IPC-Linton and then Fielding Old Boys Oroua. The win over FOBO was particularlysatisfying as they went on to win the competition. The team made the top four play offs with a semi final against FOBO in Kimbolton. Thiswas another extremely hard fought match however FOBO prevailed with 24 to 13 win.All in all it was a satisfying season and the team can be pleased in making the semi finals. There are some very promising players within this team and it is hoped that a good numberof the players will stay with the club to bolster the future.Gary Milligan, Paul Sheehan, Warren Chapman17

Marist Tourney - 1sts/2ndsA big thank you for the lads that made the path to the big A. I hope you all enjoyed theweekend and I know a few girls are not the same anymore. A few notes, thanks goes toBondi for a special time especially turning up in Bath robe for the first game Saturday, thelads in room 413? We didn't even get a room charge after the state you left it in.To the guest players, a big thank you for taking the time to come and enjoy the festivities.Cheers AjMarist Royals, Manawatu Div 2.Winners Of New Zealand Marist Tourney, (Social Division)2nd in our division, with only 2 losses all year96 goals scored. 29 against. 18 games. 14 wins. 2 draws. 2 losses.Well this has been a good year for the Royals, a new team of sorts. The Royals Leadby Myself, as a Player/coach with help from Captain Bobby Shortall and Vice Captain KyleJensen. Bob has been good value leading the royals this year, with bob you will alwaysget 100%.Kyle the pick of my backs this year, and he has really taken to the roll of vice captain byshowing us on the field a great attitude and a never say die resolve. Some other players returned from last year.Carl Williams (diesel) a class player, a little quiet but when he needs too he does histalking on the field.Phillip Lynch, the old man in the team along with me that is, unlike me he has kept hisfitness and is still a class player, when he is on the field.Scott Richards (braveheart), Our Goalie and team Clown if you will. Great guy to havearound, good goalie and has made some class saves when he has been on the field. Then we add in a mix of new player that came to the team from other Marist teams andfrom outside the club.Razvi and Cristian ToT, the brothers of Mayhem, both talented and skilful players and anasset to any team they sign for. (There It IS)Dave Benton and George Alemu, came in from other clubs and became a big part of ourdefence with great tackles and speed out wide. The Gillespie Boys also new to the Royals this year and Andy and Scott have given ussome much needed Grit out there. Scott has blistering pace and will not give up, needs toslow down in front of goal. Andy does not quite have his brothers speed but hey you won’ttry going around him twice, he will nail you every time, big season from both these boys.James Valtorta (super) came for the year, with his lightning quick pace and his ability topull out a class shot from nowhere he has been solid for our team and a real worry for theopposing defence.Brendon, also new to the team, was our golden boot on 25 goals, and most were shotsfrom 25–30 meters with a couple from half way just to prove that he can, with great abilityon and off the ball, pace, and a nice shot.Well done Royals it’s been a great year and I look forward to next year.Richard Nielsen, Player/Coach22

Women’s 1st TeamPalmerston North Marist Team of the YearI have had the honour of coaching the women’s 1st team this year, what a year we havehad:• We won the G Robert knock out cup,• We finished 2nd in our league with only 1 loss• We were runners up in the Federation knock out cup.• We were also runners up in the New Zealand Marist tourney. So yes, wow what a year. Thanks must go to my co-captains Brooke Kenny and JamieHudson. Both senior players in the team but two girls that the club is lucky to have. The whole 16 players that I had in the squad this year have played exceptionally well, weare lucky to have such good players at Marist.Let’s not forget we have some great young talent as well, Maia Green, Axel Oswald andJess Mason. In fact they are so strong and skill full on the field that it’s easy to forget thatsome are just 14-15 years of age.So thank you to you all from Rachelle Pine in goals to Jaimi and Jamie in the backs toBrooke and Nic in the middle and Renee up front,And big thanks goes to the players that have been there week in and week out and arehappy to contribute in whatever way they can.The Future looks Bright for all these girls and I wish you all the best of luck.I’ll be back next year to try to win this league and the fed cup, it’s good to have targets,So ladies of the 1st team, well done for a season well played.Richard Nielsen, Coach/Manager24

Marist ReservesA moderately successful season finishing just outside the top 3 and as they all say if onlythose games we drew went to wins and the ones we lost went to draws we would be ina better place. A big thank you to the 32 odd players that pulled on the green and whitestripes for me this year. It is muchly appreciated.A couple of special mentions firstly to Matt Goldsworthy who has left the region forwork reasons and gone to Blenhiem, your funny reasoning on drinking rules will be missedand also your team first work ethics. Also to Kenny from the Banshees, I am glad we couldlet you be part of a winning team even though it was against North End on the last gameof the year.Cheers lads,Your coaching teamAj and Ace25

CYCLINGBikeManawatuCycling in the Manawatu has had some exciting events and results in 2012. In JanuaryManawatu hosted the NZ Cycle Classic Mens Tour which saw a team of locals competeagainst some of the best men riders ever to come to New Zealand. The NZCT Women'sTour rolled into town in February and Bike Manawatu ran alongside this event la Femmefun ride. This was the conclusion of 33 days of cycling which saw a cycling event on eachday. Then in March Bike Manawatu had 9 riders in the West Coast North Island team at theNational Track Championships in Invercargill. Special mention should be made of MichaelaDrummond with 4 gold medals in the U15 Girls. Campbell Stewart won 3 gold medals andone silver. And of course big sister Kate ….despite a huge workload where she enteredvirtually every available U17 girls event from sprint to points to scratch plus teams events,Kate came home with 2 gold medals, 2 silver and a bronze. To cap that off the, the WCNI U17 Girls pursuit team which included Kate, Ruby Perry andMaxyna Cottam from New Plymouth smashed the NZ record in winning gold. Our U17 Boys of Jordan Castle, Connell Leahy and Kyle Davie scored a silver beaten by agnats whisker by a strong Southland team. Then in April we helped out with the Country Road Classic ride which doubled asthe WCNI Road champs. The same weekend saw the WCNI ITT Champs hosted by BikeManawatu on our weekly time trial course. Bike Manawatu riders took away the majorityof the medals across all age groups on both days.At the end of April the Bike NZ Club Road Nationals were held in Hawkes Bay and was agreat opportunity for Bike Manawatu riders to compete not too far from home.Bike Manawatu has had considerable success with riders gaining National honours.Mark Findlay (U19) was selected to ride in New Zealand teams at the Tour of Canberra -one of the premier road races for juniors in Australia. Also selected were Kate Stewart andJordan Castle. Campbell Stewart attended and raced in the under 15 grade winning theoverall tour in his age group. A sure sign of excellent results looming on the horizon in hiscycling career. In May we ran the Manfeild 6 hour challenge which saw teams or individuals ride the3km circuit at Manfeild with the challenge being to see who could ride the most laps in6 hours. The winning team was from Hotel Coachman. Over 290 riders competed in thisevent either in teams or individuals. This is an event that has an exciting future as it isunique in the NZ cycling event calendar. The club has also been running an active recreational cycling programme, catering forall levels of cyclists. These rides depart from Memorial Park at 8.00am every Sunday.Distances vary from approximately 50 km to 90 km and the focus is on social bunch riding. And with the summer fun ride season approaching fast these rides are a great way to buildup your fitness and to get out and enjoy the Manawatu countryside.Off the bike, social events have been well attended, in particular a club quiz night thatdoubled as a fund-raising evening for our New Zealand representatives. The highlight of the year would have to be the Olympics where we saw Jesse Sergentand Simon van Velthooven, both very committed Bike Manawatu members that started32

their cycling careers in the Manawatu, win bronze medals at the London Olympics. Simonon his return to New Zealand was the guest speaker at the Awards Dinner held at HotelCoachman. He was presented with a Bike Manawatu skin suit and asked to wear it withpride as Bike Manawatu is extremely proud of him and his cycling excellence. In another successful event, the Feilding Festival of Cycling which has been held at theend of August has now shifted to September but entries show that we will have a top fieldof cyclists from all over the country. The Schools Cycling programme continues to go from strength to strength, with upto 100 riders riding on Sunday mornings. And along with the development of a CyclingCoaching programme Bike Manawatu is working towards its goal of making the Manawatuthe Heart of Cycling in New Zealand. The Bike Manawatu Board would like to thank the sponsors of BikeManawatu, includingthe Marist Organisation, Pub Charity, Southern Trust and ECCT.Erg night at the Marist club roomsOnce a year the cycling code showcases the sport of cycling to the Palmerston northMarist sport fraternity. It is done by bringing an “erg” to the clubrooms. The idea behindit is to challenge the visitors at the clubhouse. Preferably with representatives from theMarist codes to see who can beat who on the erg. All of this with a dash of Tour de Franceatmosphere. This year we could use the new Lemond erg from John Stewart with the powermeter sponsored by the Pedal Pushers. A great machine and the meter tell you all aboutyour performance. On erg night though only max watt is what counts. The men of the nightwas Kyle a 15 year old playing rugby for the presidents. He produced a 898 watts. The juniorgirls was topped by Natasha a presidents rugby supporter.Natasja Junior boys went to 11year old Tyler a junior rugby player. The senior men winner was Alex Denholm producing 757watts. On behalf of the life members of the club Paul O’Brien took the stand. On his firsteffort the meter was not recording so he had to give it a second shot. Paul was very pleasedto see that his effort outperformed the colts representative effort. All in all a nice evening at the Clubrooms. Thanks to Glenys for the nice nibbles, Johnfor the use of the erg and Pedal Pushers for the use of the power meter. For next yearwe will try to pick an evening with more codes playing at home so we can get some morecompetition in.Matthijs van WagtendonkPaul O’BrienNatasja33

HOCKEYMarist Division 2 WomenThis team is the top Marist women’steam playing in the local Manawatucompetition. It is a fixture of youth andexperience and the players have gelledvery well this season. We have led thedivision for most of the season and usreaching the semi’s is not in doubt justthe placing. At present we are in secondplace by one point and the final weeksgames will have a bearing on thosepositions. We have had quite a few players comeand go this season for numerous reasonsso have done well to maintain such agood standard. Our chances of winning the division are pretty good if all our key playersare well and available.Mention must be made of the leadership in the defence of Sandy McCorkindale whoseorganisational ability is a strength on the field. In the mid-field up and coming schoolgirl Casey Waddell is a real asset with her strong stick skills and tire less energy and AlixCarnihan with her silky skills add a real dimension to the attack. Up front Helen Riley, ChloeHannah and Shayna Scott are a strong attacking trio and their skills will be needed overthe next three weeks. Here’s hoping they can put together their best games as we have been bridesmaid oncetoo often.Marist Division 3 WomenThe Marist team started off the seasonwith a large amount of returning playersbut also a healthy dash of new blood.Shiree Arnold was nominated coachand began the season sidelined due toadvanced stages of pregnancy, howeverafter the birth of a gorgeous healthybaby girl Leila she joined the team onthe field with astonishing speed. Theteam has since had an excellent seasontrying out lots of new skills, set plays andeven occasionally a complete shake up inpositions. A great turn out of players formost games has seen us meeting withsuccess, of 14 games played, we have38

won 6 and drawn three placing us third on the leader board. The weather throughoutthe season has been mostly fantastic and we have only suffered through one extremelysoggy game after which everyone felt the meaning of the term “Winter Hockey”. Headingtowards the Semi’s Marist is feeling confident and with a tight, strong team hopefully ourbest games are yet to come.Marist Senior Mens 1st Division Hockey TeamThe Marist 1st div Hockey team, hasenjoyed its first season. As a totally newteam this year results haven’t alwaysgone our way, but we have certainlygained in experience and have learnedwhat it will take next year to go further. We carried a large squad of player so allgot to opportunity to play at a high level. The next season hope is that we get astrong feeder team into 2 division mensto support our top team. We have hadsome really good results against morewell established clubs. The pleasing thingthat a number of our squad have gone onthis year to play for their regional teams. Joshua Scott and Scott Leggett, for Manawatu.Chris Herbert and Peter Whally, for Taranaki. Also Michael Sadler, Manawatu under 18s.The whole team has trained and played hard through the season, and all have strongrespect for the team and the club. The players joining Marist this year have been a mixtureof young and a few more experienced players. Marist has supported the team well. Alsowould like to thank our Sponcers SES ltd, and VIK Village inn Kitchen, who have helped usthrough the season.Marist GreenThis season the Green team had astable core of returning players with afew new players who have fitted in to theteam well. Brian and Steve have workedhard on encouraging the team to play asa unit and this is reflected in the steadilyimproving results. The team should make the semi-finalsof the Div 4 competition.39

Marist Originals Season Wrap upMarist Originals began the season withthe return of coach Ash Patel and sixmembers of the team from 2011 season;it also had an influx of new players. Itwas great to have so much enthusiasmand skill within the team. The hockeyseason began with a well earned win inthe first competition game winning 1-0.Unfortunately it was not to last and wehad a series of tough games in which wewere unable to come out on top. As theseason is drawing to a close the teamhas found their stride again thanks to thededication of the players and coachingstaff and have in turn had a couple ofwell deserved wins. Many of the players will be returning for 2013 season and this willenable us to compete strongly in the division.Marist GoldMarist Gold was a thrown together atthe last minute team. With players fromCollege age to a 60 + year old and a widevariety of skill levels, the team has takentime to develop into a cohesive unit. With good coaching from Pete Bowenand a simple game plan, the team haspicked up the odd win and are pushingthe other teams much harder.Next year will be the time that MaristGold really starts to shine.40
