VII. BRANCHESDELHI BRANCH:The year under review has been a challenging one. ICS Delhi undertook a series of Projects, reaching the hithertounreached – the elderly and those with a hearing handicap. We also were able to hold a special screeningfor Breast Cancer patients thanks to funding for the purpose.Project HelpAge Sahyog began in May 2010, but its full potential was realized in the course of 2011-12. It wasa humbling exercise to experience the gratitude of Senior Citizens for the help offered.Another exciting Project was the making of a Cancer Awareness film for the Deaf using Indian Sign Languagefor the Deaf. Interaction between ICS and teachers/interpreters for the Deaf was mutually educative.2012 dawned bringing multiple changes for ICS Delhi. Our revered Founder Vice Chairman, Mr. K. K. Mehtadecided to retire, citing advancing years & infirmity as reasons. Mr. O. P. Nayar, long time Secretary has takenover as Vice Chairman, & Mrs. Jyotsna Govil has taken on the responsibility of Hon. Secretary. At the same Managing Council meeting, CanKids request to separate from ICS Delhi was accepted. The MCaccepted that CanKids had grown beyond the Delhi/NCR and the tutelage of ICS Delhi. CanKids request to theNational MC to be granted Branch status was turned down. CanKids will now become a separate NGO. Theprocess of de-merger is now underway.ICS Delhi Volunteers undertook a Consultative Review of Work of the Branch. The brain-storming was a catharticexercise, & several changes are under way. Volunteers are the Soul of ICS Delhi, and will continue to drivethe organization & delivery of programs■CANCER JAGRITI:● World No-Tobacco Day is celebrated each year, inviting young people to interpret WHO themes in 5-min skits & posters. About a dozen schools participate. Their original & thoughtful presentations weremuch appreciated by the Judges drawn from WHO, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, and Tobaccoactivists.● A new venture was collaboration with AIESEC, the student body, who brought in 2 sets of InternationalInterns in July- September. Keeping young people happily occupied was a new learning for our Volunteers,& helped everyone evaluate on our set ways! A third group came in December-January.● Creation of a Film on Cancer Awareness for the Deaf was another new undertaking, introducing us tothe needs of a disadvantaged section of society.● In the month of November a new venture started by addressing sex workers from the red light areaof DelhiEvents:●●●●In April, a 2-day “Drive for Cancer” Golf Tournament was organized at Delhi Golf Club. 12 teams participatedand ICS got a lot of visibility.2011 saw two Walks for Cancer. Our regular date in February was taken by a sister NGO, so we chosethe first Sunday in November to celebrate Indian Cancer Awareness Day. Cancer Day was celebratedin November with a Cancer Walk organized by the ICS TeamIn December, we were happy to welcome Mr. Kaviratne, Chairman, ICS on his first visit to our operationsin Delhi. On 4th February, ICS Jagriti organized the Annual Fund Raiser at the Bahai Auditorium. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Shekhar Sircar,ICS made an appearance in every Stall. Two young lawyers, Mr. Navin Syiem & his colleague undertook a Sponsored Trek in the Zanskar Valleyalong the frozen river. It is called the Chador Trek. They raised over Rs 1 lakh for ICS.Radio/TV Talks: Every 1 st and 3 rd Friday volunteer speakers give a talk on AIR FM Gold 106.4 MHz. Thesetalks have been very popular and helpful in getting people to the centre for screening. The number of callson the Helpline after every talk is a guide to the effect of the talks and their widespread reach. The ProstateCancer month of April, Cervical Cancer (Pap Test Delhi) month of November and various sponsored screeningprojects get wide spectrum publicity due to these radio talks.Manav Rachna University in Faridabad runs a local radio network. They recorded 8 talks of 1 hr durationeach and beam the talks at intervals of time. The volunteer speakers did a commendable job in recordingthese talks. The CDs of these talks are in the office for future use.Volunteers have been featured on Al Jazeera TV, Lok Sabha TV and other channels, taking work of ICS Delhito the public eye.Training: Training Workshops are organized both in-house, and by sending Volunteers to the Workshops organizedby city Hospitals. The latter also gives visibility to ICS. Workshops were organized in April, June and July.On 15 th November a training workshop was conducted for new volunteers. The Gurgaon group of volunteerspeakers were trained in this workshop.minent doctors from AIIMS conducted an awareness talk on 16 th November. This too was attended by ICSspeakers. From August –October a series of workshops were organized at the CDC when Dr Sajeela Maini (renownedcessation expert) trained 5 volunteers in Tobacco Cessation. The Breast Rehab Centreopened simultaneously, offering a service of great importance to Survivors of Breast Cancer. In November2009, a Diagnostic unit with a Mammography machine & a Bone Densitometry machine was opened underthe aegis of the Lala Diwan Chand Trust. Prashanti moved to 11/70 Vikram Vihar, to a building owned byLDCT. The new Unit took up a lot of time and effort in getting established as a reliable centre, offeringmuch needed Diagnostic services at a highly subsidized rate. Word-of-mouth advertising, pamphlets & flyers, and then the services of a PRO employed by LDCT slowly spread the word, and this is the first year whenPrashanti Diagnostics has shown more paying patients/clients than the sponsored ones.ICS Prashanti, the Healing & Rehab Centre continues its low-key activity, steadily working to provide reliefand succor to cancer patients; often the one bright spot in the week for patients & families living in difficultcircumstances outside city Hospitals. Some activities are highlighted below. The Diagnostic Centre, supported by the Lala Diwan Chand Trust is only just beginning to show signs ofearning its keep. Establishing credibility is a long, slow process. Much effort has been expended with thePRO and Ambulance bringing clients. The Centre is still very dependant on LDCT & ICS for financial support.■ICS Cancer Sahyog: (President – Mrs. Sita Paintal)ICS Cancer Sahyog is the oldest of ICS Delhi Units. It offers Emotional Support together with a measureof financial support to patients in need. Its unique membership is confined to Cancer Survivors & immediateCaregivers. Other Volunteers are very welcome as associate Members, undertaking the necessary tasks involvedin administering these services.28

We had some interesting events like theChaddar Trek & sponsored Walk, and a zingy Fashion Show, adding interest to our efforts at fund collection.MEMBERSHIP & INSURANCE: Since Membership continues to be tied to Insurance, which is a National concern, there is little or no effort put in on garnering new members. It is strongly recommended that Membershipshould be a Branch function & collection & policy be decided by each Branch. This way, strong advocacy groupscan be built in each area, giving impetus to attention to cancer issues.30

We can not conclude without a record thanks to Mr. OP Nayar, Vice Chairman, for his continued guidance andoversight of our activity, & for the calm & clear mind that our Treasurer, Mr. M. S. Mathur brings to bear ondeliberations. ICS Delhi continues to strive to excellence.CONCLUSION: As can be seen, all Units of Indian Cancer Society, Delhi have put in much effort during the year. The enthusiasm & dedication of Volunteers keep activity humming. Volunteers are the heart of our Branch, &it is their willing service that is indispensable. Equally important is the dedication of our Staff, both at the Office& Cancer Detection Centre, who support the work with calm & efficiency.KOLKATA BRANCH:The Kolkata Branch of the Indian Cancer Society is the pioneer organization in East India which has achievedgreat success in its fight against Cancer by organising large number of Awareness Programs and Detection Campsnot only in the metropolis but in suburban areas and remote villages. The experience of working in the fieldof Cancer for last three decades has made it clear that two factors are largely responsible for the spread ofCancer at a very high rate in the present times. Firstly lack of awareness among common people that certainprecautions do prevent cancer and it is cured if it is diagnosed early. Secondly there is dearth of knowledgeamong medical practitioners with regard to the latest developments in the treatment of cancer. Indian CancerSociety, Kolkata, true to its tradition, has been carrying on a two pronged attack against such challenges. The Awareness Programs and Detection Camps organized by Indian Cancer Society, Kolkata disseminate vitalinformation about the disease among cross sections of society regularly. At the same time programs of interactivesessions and refresher courses for doctors promote interaction among them, giving them a chance to sharetheir views and update their knowledge. The remarkable thing about Indian Cancer Society, Kolkata, is that ithas etched its image as an organization rendering effective service to combat cancer. Its activities as a resultare not confined to Eastern India alone but it has reached distant areas like Madhya Pradesh too. The Societyhas been rendering commendable service with growing success.Cancer Awareness & Cancer Detection Camps held during 2011-12 are given below.No. of PersonNo. of person CheckedSr Venue Date Program Attended Male / Female Sponsor1 Laxmi Narayan Maternity Home 4, 03.04.11 Cancer Awareness 250 Female-80 Konark CharitableJustice Chandra Madhav Road,TrustKolkata - 20Cancer Detection 802 A.I.W.C.BH-126, 09.04.11 Cancer Awareness 150 Male-17 Manoj TodiSalt Lake City Kokata - 91FoundationCancer Detection 87 Female-703 Ichapur Road Pallubasi, 10.04.11 Cancer Awareness 200 Male-57 Manovikas Trust14/1 Ichapur, Kadamtala HowrahCancer Detection 85 Female-284 Shree Bhumi Bikash Manch 24.04.11 Cancer Awareness 300 Male-49 Shri Ram KishanShree Bhumi, Kolkata -48AgarwalCancer Detection 75 Female-265 Saptarshi,Surya Sen Street, 28.05.11 Cancer Awareness 150 Male-39 Shri Ram KishanKolkata-9AgarwalCancer Detection 55 Female-166 Sankha Subhra Welfare Society, 29.05.11 Cancer Awareness 250 Male-43 H.P.Budhia CharitableSakherbazar,Hindmotor, HooghlyTrustCancer Detection 78 Female-3531
