STATEMENT
My name is Andreea Anghel, I am currently 21 and as
of October 2009 I am studying for my Bachelor’s Degree
in Graphics at UAD Cluj-Napoca, Romania / ASP
Wroclaw, Poland. The whole theme of my work is based
on the human condition and degradation...from sins to
problems or simply human nature. I’ve started to create
them when I was 16 and I hope to keep exploring these
depths. To me, they represent not only a message to my
viewers, but also an attempt at trying to see beauty in
imperfection.
RICCARDO ATTANASIO - IT
STATEMENT
Since I finished university in 2006 I moved to London
where I opened my first atelier, continuing my work focusing
on Painting e performance. My paintings has involved
the creation of conceptually based sociopolitical but
mainly spiritual contents . The technique is mainly oil on
canvas. I like working with the line. My paintings and performance
use the line as a visual representation of the
breath. In my painted work I deconstruct human figure
with the simple use of a black line. I like working with the
sensation of space and exploring the power of fullness
and emptiness. What I do is just out lining the figures I
paint leaving the white background uncovered. When I
paint I like to feel free to explore the black line on white
background that is for me needed since it gives me the
sensation of clarity. I believe that for an artist mistakes
do not exist it is just a tool for further development, to go
beyond. My performance history is very broad too. I use
performance to get out of my studio, to meet my audience,
to have direct feedback, to share with others. There
is a relation in between my paintings and performance,
even when I work on photography, although the content
yai - pag.12
can seem to the spectator different. The thing that links
all the media I use is breathing. Each work I make is in
relation with my life, it is all like a hi-tech personal diary,
where I write my experiences with the media I use. In
2004 I began going to different dance classes since my
passion for it. From that year I began exploring relaxation
techniques, contact improvisation, Butoh. My interest
for the body and anatomy of it has increased even
more. It was not anymore an indirect experience (like
drawing muscles and bones) it became feeling my skeleton
and all body system on my own. I started to be very
interested in meditation. Meditation has a huge influence
in my work. It is leading me to the desire of sharing more.
That is why I began my street performances. In 2002,
with 3 collaborators, I managed to empty a supermarket
pretending we were shopping. We were only emptying
the shelves so the next shopper would have not found
his desired product. That action has been made in order
to raise awareness of our dependency by the supermarkets.
This work is titled ?Powerless market?. From 2011
I am focusing on different street happenings, I am exploring
the boundaries of normality, how strong habits
of everyday life are bounded to us. We have rules that
became part of our genetic code. Rules lead us to behave
in a certain way. I work in the streets a personal reappropriation
of the city where I live. When I do a street
action I often have to deal with police, irritated citizens,
strange glances but at the same time I have plenty of
satisfaction which comes from smiles, interest, will to
understand what is my action about and why I am doing
that. Interesting conversations with people I meet. When
I perform in the street I like to be focus but never ignoring
the people around me, it is part of it. My aim in art is to be
able to open people’s perception. When is a painting, a
performance in the theatre or in the street it has the aim
of connecting us as human beings.
STATEMENT
“My recent artwork has been conceived with a profound
cinematographic influence.
The cinema itself interests me as a source, specially the
experimental cinema and the black & white footage from
the mid 20th century.
Every project starts with a paper-based storyboarding
and from that piece, I develop scenarios and create characters
and stories that I take into the audiovisual format
by means of the stop-motion animation technic.
The artwork is focused on themes such as the metamorphosis
and the transformation process to produce
the animation, where mutant characters, objects that
come into life or any other type of creature are born after
the mixture of everyday reality and personal events. “
STATEMENT
Timothy Holt’s work concentrates upon the transformation
of discarded domestic appliances to create new
forms, whilst also retaining part of the original object.
His playful nature of naturally manipulating these socalled
purposely designed devices highlights an embellishment
of the everyday.
The works on show closely resemble the “manufacture
program” in turn questioning the boundaries between
art and object senses; systematically dipping into design.
Subsequently his constructed series of “artefacts”
serve the means for creating an intellect of identity,
civic, collective...and even personality. The issues
addressed in the mechanical pieces are used to shape
perceptions of how objects are perceived.
STATEMENT
The cycle of paintings that I’m currently working on, is regarding
one single phrase “Sundial-Carpe diem”, a kind
of a mantra of nowadays, popularly translated as “seize
the day”, make the most of today, enjoy the present. The
mindfulness of our own mortality is key in making us realize
the importance of the moment. These paintings are primarily
the result of my thinking about the beautiful aspects in the
human nature and the expression of my faith in the reaches
of the human spirit. Art has always and will always refer to
the senses, mind and spirit. Most often, the contents of that
reference is translated into the form of question about the
relation between man and time. Are we destined to move
in a meaningless rhythm within our limited life circle, or do
we still have a chance to become better, to move from the
periphery of that circular path towards the center, where
meaning and eternity await us. The paintings are painted
on plates made of aluminum, shiny, modern, but above all,
remarkable for it’s low density and for its ability to resist corrosion
due to the phenomenon of passivation- an eternal
material appropriate for the eternal message.
MOIRA LOVELL - UK
STATEMENT
The After School Club 2006/7
The school uniform, as worn in the clubs, offers up a
sexualised and infantilised display of unthreatening
female sexuality to the male gaze. Within the education
system it aims to provide a homogeneous identity to
prevent competition between pupils. Moira Lovell mixes
the two up by returning the clubbers to their secondary
school gates whilst still in their revellers garb. ‘Raunch
culture’ is spliced with the playground as Lovell’s photographs
abruptly report on how little seems to remain
of the schoolyard’s openness and curiosity. Yet the suggestion
is also that school’s as ‘disciplinary’ institutions
have in some way, as part of today’s society, created
obedient adherents to the male gaze.
FILIACIÓN A GRUPO GENERACIONAL, MOVIMIEN-
TO, O TENDENCIA (nombre del grupo e integrantes)
exposiciones e itinerancias, produciendo y presentando
STATEMENT
In art I have come after an accident. After a complicated
surgery and an extended semi-paralyzed standing in me
were radical changes that have touched the first place of
my inner world and what surrounds it.
I began deeply to interest in issues of socio-political,
psychological aspects of the worldview of people who
were not only within my reach, but also beyond it. This
was very different from what I have converged and excited
before, at the time when I was a professional sportsman.
Critical events have forced me to throw away the
old values, while were offering an intriguing alternative.
In the process of actively seeking and life-long learning
I acquired artistic skills, which allowed me to formulate
and to educate my artistic statement by means of contemporary
art. Today, analyzing the traveled distance, I
realize that I have done serious work on filling the Moldovan
art space with actual practice, such as photo and video
installations, performances, sculpture and painting,
working with public space and other relevant artistic elements.
The listed puzzles synthesize with my disturbing
internal contradictions, forming at the same time my artistic
response, which seeks to reveal processes not only
our region but also to look beyond it.
In my opinion, only the desire to achieve something not
attainable can form and argue future vision of the day,
regardless of the existing high degree of risk.
dea of the project:
In this project one of the main theses of the constructive
discourse is that the core of the project is an ideological
unification of separate views. This is reflected in the
quest for positive movement in the cultural society by
combining the two cultural spaces of one region separated
by war in 1992 between the Republic of Moldova
and Transnistria.
Participants
The project participants are representatives from various
artists and dance groups from Transnistria and Moldova.
STATEMENT
Creation and use of sculptures has been one of the main
issues of imaginary artists for several artistic periods.
This matter was one of the reasons why a human board
was chosen for this present piece. HASSAN RAZGHAN-
DI reproduces his own body and uses sculpture in a different
manner in this piece. This piece is just as different
and strange as all his other works. Social, historical and
geographical factors have constantly had an important
effect on his mind. His analyzing, ironic, bitter and criticizing
point of view is evident in all his work. It is obvious
from the name of the exposition; that the characters of
this piece are different people of our present society. People
we pass by every day. The artist has revealed and
illustrated a part of their inner selves with the use of Iranian
symbols and placed them in front of the audience
as a mirror.
STATEMENT
Art holds a unique place in culture as it is a nexus between
spirituality, science and philosophy. In this way, the
contemporary artist is like yesterday?s alchemist, an
innovator both in the physical realm as well as the metaphysical.
Like the ancient pursuit of transforming the
base substances of the earth into gold, my works explore
the transmutation of the body and psyche toward both
enlightenment and destruction. I?ve made a long study
of noise within systems of order. Much of my work explores
tensions between chaos and structure. I believe
video is the perfect medium for this pursuit.
STATEMENT
I believe that in sculpture there is a physical intelligence
at play, separate from notions of knowledge in the
normal sense. It is a language of the body, of hands,
movement, texture, color and form. My need to create
is physical. The process is fundamentally cathartic; my
work is grounded in the subconscious, in ideas, informed
by my environment and my sense of the world. Imbuing
them with a hard presence is a type of release. The
objects become extensions of myself, a reflection of my
feelings, sensations and urges.
My sculptures are ambivalent and are frequently located
between two extremes: immunity and vulnerability,
seduction and repulsion, work and play, death and birth.
Despite this ambivalence, the artistic process is complete
and total.
STATEMENT
Pauline Thomas is a french artist and digital experience
designer. She’s working currently on two different
projects around body and map, the identity being the
link between both projects. In the neck of time has been
awarded 5 times and exhibited this year in London, Berlin,
Paris, Kiev and New York (curated by the Whitney
Museum and Biennale curator, Elisabeth Sussman) -
and ‘Mapping vacuum density’ she has started in Berlin
last year. In the neck of time is a serie composed of neck
portraits taken over 3 years. The portraits foregrounding
another faces cleared from sexual genre, social category
and esthetic values. James Brewer said :”This is far from
pure photography: it is a way of seeing human beings,
and as with many oil paintings, the perception changes
as the viewer moves to a new position.” Mapping vacuum
density is an on-going mixed-media art piece (maps,
graphic design, collage, photography). A map has been
designed to stick all the cities she has lived, a feelings
diagram legends the map, both canvas are linked by
colored pins to geolocalize her feelings, memories and
identity discoveries.
