TEENAGE CANCER
TRUST NEWS
The Teenage Cancer Trust unit in the
Royal Hospital for Sick Children
(Yorkhill) was officially opened on
Tuesday 19th January 2010.
Half of the £700,000 for the new unit was
raised as a result of a mammoth £350,000
fundraising campaign by Teenage Cancer
Trust West of Scotland Action Group.
Former Rangers star, Arthur Newman, cut
the ribbon to open the new ward. He is
pictured here with relatives of cancer victims,
including Russell Boyd, whose
brother Allister (featured in May 2009
issue of Chatterbox) raised a staggering
£130,000 for TCT despite battling a brain
tumour and Sarah Delaney, whose brother
Andrew lost his fight against cancer in
November 2003, aged 15. As Chatterbox
readers will know, Andrew’s father John,
his family, friends and many fund-raisers
(too numerous to mention here!) have
worked tirelessly to raise funds for this
new unit and they are to be congratulated
on this fantastic achievement.
Prior to the opening of the new unit, teenagers
would have to choose between having
treatment at Yorkhill with childen in
the Schiehallion cancer ward, or the Beatson
with adults.
The new unit has six beds for 13-16 year
olds, plus social areas, a kitchen, lounge
and TV as well as games consoles. This
unit is similar to the one at Beatson West
of Scotland Cancer Centre, which cares
for 17-24 year olds and makes Glasgow
the first place in Scotland to offer specialised
cancer care for ALL teenagers.
STOP PRESS - John Delaney would like
to thank everyone who has supported the
TCT fundraising efforts over the period of
this campaign. As recently as last week,
John received a further £272 from individuals
and groups in Lochwinnoch,
which was very pleasing and really inspires
him to keep going.
UPDATE on the Brown Bull
TCT AUCTION & RAFFLE
which raised the grand total of
£4,530.60.
A terrific result.
Thanks to all who contributed.
Historical Society
At the January evening, Murray and Joy
Blair gave an interesting powerpoint talk
on the subject of washing greens. Much
of which was remembered by those of
us over a certain age, especially the
soaps, washboards, boilers etc. Well, I
might have seen my mother using them!
Our guest speaker at the February meeting
is Ian McCrorie with a talk "Paisley
High Street". This will be held on
Thursday 25th February, at 7.30pm in
the Parish Church Guild Room.
Visitors and new members welcome. An
evening visit is £2 and includes
tea/coffee/cake and biscuits.
