FRENCH 2 HONORS SYLLABUSInstructor: _ ___ <strong>School</strong> Year:____Time: ____________________________Course #: 513Course Title: French 2 HonorsCourse Description:This course is designed for freshmen who have studied two or more years of French inthe junior high and have received an above average score on a foreign languageproficiency test. It may also be taken by second level students who have maintained atleast a “B+” average in the Level 1 course of study and have received a satisfactory scoreon a foreign language proficiency test. It builds on achievement and proficiencyobjectives of French 1. Class activities integrate the four skills of listening, speaking,reading, and writing and expand on the culture and civilization introduced in French 1.Each student will be required to purchase a workbook.Expectations from students:After successfully completing this course, the student is expected to:1. Understand short conversations.2. Express most survival and routine social needs.3. Read and comprehend written communications, information, and descriptions.4. Write simply, demonstrating control of elementary grammatical structures.5. Evidence knowledge of French culture and civilization.Credits:1 Honors CreditLevel: 9, 10, 11, 12Prerequisites:An “A” or “B+” average in 2 years of French in the junior high school Level 1 with ahigh test score on the foreign language proficiency test or an “A” or “B” average in Level1 with a high score on a foreign language proficiency test and teacher recommendation.Areas of Study:The beginning student will further develop skills in language comprehension, speaking,reading, and writing. The students will be encouraged to be creative and demonstratetheir individual talents in each of the basic skills.

Oral participation2. Homework assignments: It is the student’s responsibility to complete homeworkassignments as given by the teacher. Failure to do so will result in a lowering ofthe grade.3. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given on a regular basis to check for knowledge ofspecific material.4. Unit tests: These standardized tests which accompany the textbook will beadministered upon completion of each unit.5. Examination and Special Projects: There will be a final exam given at the end ofeach semester. Special projects will be required throughout the year.Attendance:Due to the nature of foreign language learning, daily attendance is essential for success.Excused Absences: As per student handbookIn class points may be forfeited if absent. It is the student’s responsibility to see theteacher about make-up work on the day he/she returns to class; the guidance departmentshould be contacted for daily assignments. If the student knows in advance of an absencefrom class because of a field trip, athletic event, etc., the student is expected to hand inthe assigned work on the day prior to his absence. If a test is scheduled for the day ofhis/her absence, the test is to be taken prior to the absence unless otherwise arranged withthe teacher.2


Unexcused Absences: No credit will be given for the work missed.Tardies:The student is expected to be in his/her seat when the bell rings. Failure to do so willresult in a tardy. With the first unexcused tardy, the student will be assigned an afterschool detention. Further tardies will be penalized as per student handbook statedprocedures.Timelines:Semester 1: Reprise Unit, Units 1 & 2Semester 2: Units 3, 4 & 5Grading:The grading scale will be decided by grade average or by total points earned each nineweeks. The following will be the overall grading scale:A = 90% - 100%B = 80% - 89%C = 70% - 79%D = 60% - 69%E = 0% - 59%3
