■ By CAMERON FISHERSIGNIFICANT PROGRESS continues on anew $14 million science and math complexon the Lee University campus. The interiorand exterior of the east wing is nearly completewith only installation of equipmentand furnishings to take place. A complicated maze ofconduit and electrical systems has been laid for efficientoperation of everything from Bunsen burners torefrigeration of lab experiments. Three levels of classrooms,laboratories, faculty offices and scientific storagewill be ready in time for the fall semester.Designed to be completed in two phases, the massivecomplex has been under construction for over ayear. Due to the topography, the east wing containsthree levels as opposed to two for the future west wing.When it opens for student occupancy, the east wingground floor will contain space for 12 faculty, twoclassrooms, dry and wet storage, and a receiving dock.On the main level will be laboratories for biology,microbiology and dissection, as well as a lobby andSouth side ofthe new sciencebuilding toweras seen fromcampus.With the tower ofthe new building inthe background, thefirst pushes on theold science buildingtook place at 9:32on May 27.TORCH • Summer 20099
