<strong>Alumni</strong> NewsFour honorees will be recognized during Swarm Week festivities<strong>Black</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> will honorseveral outstanding alumni duringthe annual <strong>Alumni</strong> Awards Luncheonheld on campus during Swarm Week.Charles (Chuck) V. Sederstrom will behonored with the Distinguished AlumnusAward; the Excellence in Education Awardwill be presented to Dr. Barry L. Jankord;Darla J. (Talty) Crown will be recognizedwith the Special Achievement Award; andDr. George C. Rinker, Ph.D. will be honoredwith the Special Service Award.Charles (Chuck) V. Sederstromstudied at BHSU and ultimately receivedhis Juris Doctorate degree from the<strong>University</strong> of South Dakota. In 1968 hebegan practicing law in Omaha, Neb., withDonald H. Erickson; and subsequentlybegan the law firm of Erickson andSederstrom. Chuck’s area of specializationhas been in corporate law with a particularreference on health law. He is currentlyGeneral Counsel to Alegent Health, whichis the largest nongovernmental employer inthe state of Nebraska, as well as the largesthospital in the state.Chuck has been active in Masonicbodies over the course of 25 years. He iscurrently a member of the Scottish Rite, theYork Rite, and Tangier Shrine, where he hasbeen a member of the Royal Order of Jesterssince 1985 and served as its director in 1998.Over the course of the past 20 years, hehas been very involved with the SalvationArmy. He served on the local Omaha Boardand for over 10 years has served on theNational Board of the Salvation Army. Inaddition, he was former chairman of theCombined Health Agencies of America.Chuck is also a very active memberand leader in many legal and civicorganizations, including American DiabetesAssociation, American Lung Association,Arthritis Foundation, Boy Scouts ofAmerica, Combined Health Agencies Driveof Nebraska, Goodwill Industries, UnitedWay, Rotary International, Chamber ofCommerce, and the Omaha Home for Boys.Chuck was President of the Omaha BarAssociation from 1984-85.Dr. Barry L. Jankord, Class of ’82,graduated with honors from BHSU andearned his bachelor’s degree in socialscience and athletic coaching. While atBHSU Barry was the student governmentvice president, Swarm Days chair, and areserve quarterback for the Yellow Jackets.He went on to study honors philosophyand graduate theology from Catholic<strong>University</strong> of America in WashingtonD.C. and earned his master’s degree ineducational administrationand his doctorate degree ineducational leadership fromthe <strong>University</strong> of Wyoming.Barry began his careerin education at SubletteCounty School Districtin Big Piney, Wyo., as amiddle school social studiesteacher. He also coachedseventh-grade football andeighth-grade girls basketball.He began working for the CampbellCounty School District (CCSD) in Gillette,Wyo., in 1990. From 1990-93 he servedpart-time as the associate principal andpart-time as the ninth-grade social studiesteacher at Sage Valley Junior High School(SVJHS). From 1993-97 he was the associateprincipal and activities director at SVJHS.He and fellow BHSU graduate Cliff Hill,Class of '81, helped double the intramuraland interscholastic activity participationfor Gillette's junior high students in themid-90s. In 1997, he started work as anelementary principal, serving Meadowlarkand Rawhide Schools until 2002.Barry currently serves as the principalfor Meadowlark Elementary School, wherehe provides educational leadership fora school of 330 students. He is also thedirector of the CCSD Title III and Englishas a Second Language (ESL) Program. Asthe director he oversees the staffing andprofessional development of K-12 EnglishLanguage Learner (ELL) programs.He has furthered his educational careerby participating in numerous teachingand administrative training courses. Barryhas also been invited to present at variouseducation conferences and he currentlyserves on the BHSU College of EducationAdvisory Board.Command Chief Warrant OfficerDarla J. (Talty) Crown, Class of ’80, enlistedin the United <strong>State</strong>s Army, Women’sArmy Corp, in 1973 after graduating fromWall High School. Upon her honorabledischarge from active duty, she immediatelyjoined the South Dakota Army NationalGuard. She earned her bachelor’s degreein elementary education from BHSUand began teaching math and science atthe junior high level. After receiving hermaster’s degree in education and science,she worked as a counselor, sales andmarketing professional, and developmentofficer.Last spring the South Dakota NationalGuard welcomed Darla as the first femaleChief Warrant Officer during a ceremonySederstrom Jankord Crown Rinkerhonoring the transfer of authority.Darla oversees Warrant Officer careerdevelopment, recruiting, morale, education,promotions, and retention.Unique assignments in her careerhave included: being assigned as apersonnel officer in a field artillery brigade,instructing leadership and land navigationfor the Officer Candidate School, andserving as a Casualty Notification Officer.In addition to her active duty time from1973-76, she also served on active dutyduring Desert Storm and Operation IraqiFreedom.Darla was named the Girl Scouts“Woman of Distinction” and received theRapid City Chamber ATHENA Award,for her contributions to the support anddevelopment of women in leadership roles.Dr. George C. Rinker, Ph.D. is knownfor his dedication to the BHSU scienceprogram. After being retired for 16 yearsfrom the <strong>University</strong> of South Dakota (USD)as an anatomy professor and associatedean he came to BHSU to volunteer hisexperience and expertise as a lab assistant.It was the quality of the program anda chance to get involved once again in avocation that he loved that brought him toBHSU.He began aiding in anatomy,mammalogy, and ecology labs over 10years ago at BHSU and has helped mentorand prepare over 95 students for graduateschool. RaeAnn Mettler, a biology graduatewho also earned her master's degree inintegrative genomics at BHSU, had theopportunity to work with him and is nowin a Ph.D. program at the <strong>University</strong> ofFreiburg, Germany. Many BHSU sciencestudents and faculty have been impressedwith him through the years and hisdedication to assist them when necessary.George earned his bachelor's degreein biology from the <strong>University</strong> of Kansasand his doctorate in anatomy from the<strong>University</strong> of Michigan, where he was anassistant professor for 12 years.In 1962, he began teaching anatomyat the <strong>University</strong> of South Dakota (USD)and retired with professor emeritus statusin 1984.For information about the <strong>2011</strong> Swarm Week festivities visit www.BHSU.edu/SwarmDays.
BHSU Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame inductees announcedThe <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Yellow Jacket Hallof Fame will induct five individuals and two teamsduring the <strong>2011</strong> Swarm Day festivities. His teams had a 179-90won-loss record, captured the South Dakota-Iowa Conference titlefour times, and made four NAIA Division II national tournamentappearances.The 1973 golf team won the SDIC championship followingtheir most successful season ever. Coach Gene Schlekeway'steam edged South Dakota School of Mines and Technologyby three strokes to capture the conference title.
