34•In the meantime, I had proceeded to Bantry on organftationwork and was operating there when I received news of the fightat Crossbarry. This was conveyed to me in a dispatch fromLiam Deasy (brigade adjutant) in which he requested me toprovide a machine gunner for the Lewis gun captured atCrossbarry. I immediately contacted Wm. O'Sullivan, a memberof the Bantry Company who had experience of this gun, andescorted him to column H.Q. where he took charge of the Lewisgun.As Charlie Hurley (brigade 0/C) had been killed on themorning of Crossbarry (19th March 19<strong>21</strong> when he endeavoured tobreak through a force of military which surrourided the housein which he was billeted, there were now further changes inthe personnel of the brigade staff. Liam Deasy's name wasnow submitted for approval to G.H.Q. for appointment as brigade0/C. and authority for the appointment came through in duecourse. The officers of Cork III Brigade now were:- 0/C.Liam Deasy; Vice 0/C. Ted O'Sullivan (witness); Adjutant,Gibbs Ross; Q.M. Dick Barrett; 0/C. Column, Tom Barry; 0/C.Engineers, Mick Crowley; 1.0. Sean Buckley; Asst. Brigade Adjt.FlorBeg1eyWithin a short time following these changes, the brigadeQ.M. was arrested and he was replaced by Tadhg O'Sullivanwho had been Q.M. of the column.Many officers and men of the column which fought atCrossbarry were now demobbed for duty in their own battalionareas. They were replaced bya mixture of new recruits andsome veterans who had previously served with the column.The new column assembled in the vicinity of Ahiohill about thelast week in March 19<strong>21</strong>.
