2008 Burgundy En Primeur 

Pristine, mineral whites and vibrant, 

aromatic reds: 2008 is a vintage that will 

appeal to lovers of classic Burgundy. 

Lay & Wheeler has specialised in the fine 

wines of Burgundy for many years, 

fostering strong, long-standing 

relationships with great growers across 

the region, many of whom we have 

worked with for decades.The release of 

the latest vintage of Burgundy is always 

eagerly awaited and this year was no 

exception. Six members of the Lay & 

Wheeler team visited Burgundy during 

the Autumn to appraise the 2008 vintage 

and we are delighted with the range of 

wines that we are able to offer. 

Vintage overview 

It is not the first time in the last decade of 

writing offers for both Bordeaux and 

Burgundy, that we are able to say that the 

vintage was assisted by a providentially 

good September. Indeed, it appears to be 

becoming something of a pattern.The 

2008 vintage in Burgundy commenced 

with cool and damp conditions during the 

Spring/Summer leading to poor flowering 

and slow development of the fruit. 

However, by the middle of August 

conditions were beginning to improve, 

which allowed the grape skins to begin to 

ripen fully.This is crucial to the 

development of flavour and to the 

accumulation of ripe tannins in the red 

grapes. At this stage, the earlier problems 

with flowering yielded unexpected 

benefits, as lower than normal yields

allowed the vines to bring their entire 

remaining crop to ripeness. 

September provided a perfect end to the 

vintage. Sunny and settled weather, 

combined with a cool north wind, 

allowed the vineyards to dry out and the 

majority of the fruit to ripen completely. 

Most growers harvested in perfect 

conditions at the end of September. With 

a shaky start to the year and selection 

required at the sorting tables at the end, 

the yields at many domaines were 

considerably lower than usual, but the 

quality of the resultant wines is 

exceptional. 

This turnaround is quite astonishing and 

few of the wines revealed any sign of the 

vintage’s earlier tribulations. It was 

certainly a year for the vigneron, with 

work required in the vineyard throughout 

the year, as well as more strict selection of 

the fruit at the winery during harvest. 

However, for those that were able to 

work through the trials of the vintage, the 

hard work has been more than worth the 

effort. We are delighted to be able to 

show an impressive range of wines, which 

demonstrate classic Burgundian elegance, 

appealing ripeness and vibrant, yet 

balanced, acidity. 

The wines 

There are similarities between this 2008 

Burgundy vintage and the 2008 Bordeaux 

vintage that we offered last June.The 

wines have a similar profile, shaped by a 

cool summer and saved by the warm 

Autumn.This will be a vintage to be 

savoured by Burgundy lovers; one in 

which the best domaines have allowed 

each appellation to express itself – surely 

the essence of this great wine region. 

White wines 

There is an obvious similarity between 

the white wines of 2008 and those of 

2007, yet there is more evident richness 

and substance to the 2008s, offset by the 

same lively acidity that had us enthusing 

about 2007s.The characteristics of the 

individual vineyards and terroirs are clear 

to read and the cool summer delivered 

pristine fruit quality.There is a 

combination of purity and charm about 

the 2008 whites, which show floral notes, 

hallmark grapefruit acidity and the 

plumpness and balance only found in top 

Chardonnay. 

Red wines 

As for the reds, we needed to be 

selective in what we proposed for this 

offer, as there was some variation, largely 

brought about by harvest date. However, 

the best have the purity of fruit we 

associated with 2007 and perhaps 2001, 

allied to some of the softness and 

approachability of a vintage such as 2000. 

They are wines that will prove immensely 

appealing in their youth and yet will 

reward mid-term cellarage.They are pure, 

refined, vibrant styles with good 

substance, plumper than 2007 with 

perhaps more backbone than 2000.

Worldwide demand for 

fine Burgundy 

Burgundy is riding on a tide of popularity and demand for its 

wines is at unprecedented levels, relative to supply.The consistent 

quality, achieved by the region’s talented and conscientious 

vignerons, has fed this demand, dispelling doubts concerning the 

hazards of buying fine Burgundy en primeur. While prices have 

risen steadily, Burgundy does not see the same massive fluctuations 

that are observed in the release prices of fine Bordeaux. 

Production levels are frequently tiny and growers each often own 

just a few rows in any important vineyard. In such cases, our case 

allowance may be counted in single figures and the scarcest wines 

can be subject to allocation. Where allocation is required, our 

policy is to offer the wines first to customers buying a spread of 

other wines at all price levels. Wines that may be subject to this 

allocation process have been marked with an asterisk **. 

The secondary market for Burgundy is small and mature examples 

of the best wines rarely come back on sale.To be sure of securing 

the wines that you want, we recommend buying en primeur.

happy to provide advice concerning which wines are likely to suit

Wines in this offer have been listed by domaine, with a brief 

introduction about the producer, and full tasting notes for each wine. 

Wines are available in either six or twelve bottle cases, as individually 

specified. Prices are all “in bond”, ie. excluding duty and VAT. 

Your wines will be stored by Lay & Wheeler at Vinothèque. Wines 

cellared following shipment will be subject to published cellarage 

charges. When you would like to remove your wines from storage, 

you will need to pay UK duty and VAT. Duty is a fixed charge,

Domaine de l’Arlot 

Domaine de l’Arlot began its renaissance in 1987 when it was 

purchased by the insurance group AXA, in partnership with Jean- 

Pierre de Smet, who became the manager of the estate. Olivier 

Leriche has guided the resurgence of the property with great success 

since 2006, introducing bio-dynamic principles, reducing yields and 

making very severe grape selection at harvest time.The accent with 

the Arlot wines is on complexity, delicacy and underlying, rather than 

overt, power.

beautifully coloured vibrant Pinot Noir that will provide almost

The flagship wine of this brilliant estate, from their huge seven hectare 

vineyard. Knockout nose of cherry liqueur, smoked earth and new 

oak.The palate has terrific ripeness, grip and density, with almost 

sugar-coated tannins. Serious wine, which demonstrates the potential

Domaine Arlaud 

Cyprien Arlaud took over the winemaking from his father in 1998 at 

this 15 hectare domaine, based in Morey-St-Denis. Cyprien’s brother 

Romain is also now ensconced at the estate whilst sister Bertille is 

one of the increasing number of Burgundian vignerons employing 

horses to work the vineyards of the Côte.

The 1er Cru Aux Cheseaux vineyard is towards the north of Morey, 

above Charmes.This has a cool and elegant feel to it, with a very 

perfumed nose of black cherry and spice, supple tannins and a sense 

of depth and balance.This is easily the best 1er cru we tasted at 

Arlaud. 2012-2017 

2008 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Arlaud

Produced from a large single parcel, situatied just below Latricières. 

This has a lovely top-note of spring flowers, wild strawberries and 

truffle. On the palate there is a smoky, animal edge.Texturally soft, 

with a ripe structure and a long complex finish. 2013-2019 


Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux 

A famous 12 hectare estate, of which winemaker and current 

custodian is Pascal Lachaux, son-in-law of Robert Arnoux who passed 

away in 1995.The wines epitomise Pinot Noir in its most glorious and 

immaculately precise form.There is no doubt that this cellar produces 

some of the most outstanding wines of the Côte.

Produced from fruit grown in and around Nuits-St-George,Vosne- 

Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny, this is a Bourgogne Rouge with 

fantastic pedigree. Supple attractive style with a core of ripe raspberry 

fruit, ripe tannins and intelligent use of oak, this has lovely weight and 

balance for a wine at this level. 2011-2015

Silky and pure, this is everything one would want in a glass of 

Chambolle. Open and complicated nose of hedgerow fruit, spicy oak 

and violet.The palate is plump and pretty, with good intensity and 

matière. Beautiful balance - will be approachable from a young age.

Winemaker Pascal Lachaux has elevated the quality at this well known 

and easy to find domaine so that he is now producing 1st division 

wines from his 12 hectare property. His Vosne villages is his signature 

wine and is made in the same way as the Grand Crus. With layers of 

bramble fruit and spicy oak, this is a harmonious, silky wine and terrific

One of the finest vineyards in Vosne, this is superb. With an almost 

jammy intensity, it has real depth and concentration, lots of smoky 

black fruits and a spine of fresh minerality and tannin. Should keep 

well and is not far from Grand Cru quality. 2013-2019 

2008 Nuits-St-Georges Les Poisets,Arnoux-Lachaux

Produced from 70 year-old-vines, which were affected by millerandage 

in 2008; something many growers see as a positive as it leads to small, 

concentrated berries. Open and expressive on the nose, with crushed 

raspberry, cherry and vanilla. Like all Pascal's wines, it is solid with a 

rich texture and intelligently used expensive new oak. Only nine 

barrels produced in 2008. 2012-2018

A little known vineyard in the southern part of Nuits-St Georges, 

where the soil is lighter and stony.This produces a lively wine with a 

fine tannic structure. Lovely fragrance on the nose with ripe 

strawberry, violet and spice.The palate is feminine and persistent, with 

flavours and structure building to a long, complex and balanced finish.

These brothers make wines that are incredibly stylish, with stunning 

purity of fruit and outstanding transparency. This particular wine is 

sourced from 65+ year old vines, a fact which really comes through in 

this beautifully balanced 1er Cru. 

Vosne-Romanée, Georges Mugneret-Gibourg B231 


The Mugneret sisters make wines that are very true to their terroir 

and this elegant Vosne is no exception. It shows perfect balance with 

a freshening vein of acidity and fine, silky tannins. This exhibits 

exceptional quality at a reasonable price.

Domaine Ballot-Millot 

The youthful Charles Ballot took over from his father at this 12 

hectare domaine in 2002, triggering greater interest in the wines 

made here. Strict pruning in the vineyards ensures lower yields and 

greater concentration and the winemaking skill is such that the 

resultant wines are poised and elegant, displaying a delightful lightness 

of touch.

The Narvaux really impressed with its fine meld of honeyed citrus, 

gentle toast and discreet mineral nature. Open and appealing, very

Showing the classic Charmes’ characters of volume and restraint, 

more viscous in nature with characters of toasted wheat, crisp citrus 

fruit -this is an elegant, lingering example with fine potential.

The tremendous appeal of this Beaune owes much to old vines. 

Sweet, ripe vibrant berry and cherry fruits with a creamy accent, very 

pure and fragrant. Appealing early drinking Pinot with plenty of charm.

Domaine Louis Boillot 

Husband of Chambolle-Musigny star Ghislaine Barthod, Louis Boillot 

has only relatively recently taken control of his own vineyards, which 

include holdings in Volnay, Pommard and Nuits-St-Georges.The grapes 

are hand-picked and Louis combines traditional wine-making practices 

with the application of modern day knowledge to create wines which 

are carefully crafted to reflect the typicity of their communes.

Another old vine (60 years) cuvée with terrific concentration and 

depth coupled with real elegance. Fresh raspberry and mint on the 

nose with a spicy almost liquorice note, with thick texture and grainy 

tannic structure.This has been made with great attention to detail.

2008 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers, Louis Boillot

Les Pruliers seemed to do particularly well in 2008 and we tasted 

some excellent examples. From very old vines of 80+ years, this has 

an almost kirsch-like character. Ripe and exotic, more Vosne than 

Nuits St Georges! The palate has dense black, mineral fruit, with 

freshness and some new oak. 2012-2018

2008 St-Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes, Hubert Lamy B186 


This has everything that is good about this vintage: grapefruity, plump 

and approachable with real verve, coupled to a more serious mineral 

edge. In my opinion the best domaine in St-Aubin. If they were 

situated in Puligny, I suspect the wines would be of similar quality and 

twice the price! 

2008 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes, Domaine 

Philippe Colin B096 £342 - 12bts in bond 

From one of the finest sites in Chassagne this is rich, nutty with notes 

of almond oil and fresh green fruit. It should develop into something 

truly special in the bottle. Philippe's 2008s were some of the best 

white wines we tasted.

Domaine J-M Boillot 

The grandson of the famed Etienne Sauzet, Jean-Marc Boillot owns 

11 hectares of vines, spread across the Côte de Beaune, including 

holdings in Puligny-Montrachet that were previously owned by 

Domaine Etienne Sauzet.This inheritance and pedigree comes 

through in his wines, which are of the highest quality. His Puligny- 

Montrachet are a delight; rich and concentrated, while remaining 

expressive of the varied terroirs from which they come.

Rich and tropical in nature, with floral notes on the nose. On the 

palate, this is round and complete, broad in the mouth, with apricot 

fruit characters. Freshening acidity and a sense of purity make this a

Bold and full-bodied, this is full of spicy, toasty characters and ripe 

citrus notes.Tropical nuances are allied with subtle oak and a smoky 

minerality, giving this a sense of poise and balance. 2011-2016

The ripe tropical notes characteristic of Boillot's style are to the fore 

in this wine, with papaya and apricot coming through on both the 

nose and palate. However, a zip of citrus acidity and a touch of 

minerality lend some structure and backbone, making this a highly

Domaine Michel Bouzereau 

Ten generations of the Bouzereau family have tended vines in 

Meursault and neighbouring Puligny, the most recent of which is Jean- 

Baptiste, Michel's son who has recently joined his father. In the last 10 

years the domaine has moved towards an organic approach for its 32 

individual plots, working with ploughs and abandoning chemical 

treatments where possible.This traditional approach has brought 

dividends in the form of expressive, well-defined wines which attract 

an enthusiastic following.

2008 Bourgogne Aligoté, Michel Bouzereau

Made from the fruit of 70 year old vines, this has a leesy, almost 

Champagne-like touch on the nose. Lively, fresh and appealing on the 

palate, with a touch of smokiness. Linear in style, with bright, 

freshening acidity. 2011-2014 

2008 Meursault Le Limozin, Michel Bouzereau

The Le Limozin vineyards are adjacent to Les Genevrières, on the 

Puligny-Montrachet side of Meursault.This is appealing and elegant, 

with a ripe, honeyed citrus touch. Precise and elegant, with a 

persistent and mouthwatering finish.Very refined for a villages style.

2008 Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières, Michel Bouzereau

Genevrières is said to be most like Puligny-Montrachet in style of all 

the Meursault sites. Golden-hued, this has a restrained leesy quality on 

the nose, along with lifted citrus aromas. Broad on the palate, with a 

stony minerality, this is very citrus in nature with a real zip of lemon 

on the long and persistent finish. Impressive. 2012-2017 

2008 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gains, Michel 

Bouzereau

This has a touch of champagne leesiness on the nose, bringing notes 

of toast and nuts. On the palate, this has an appealing nature, with 

ripe citrus fruit characters. Layered and rich, yet clean-cut. Malolactic 

fermentation was not fully complete at the time of tasting, yet this 

was evidently an excellent work in progress. 2011-2015

richer than many in this vintage, to keep the acid in balance. Long and 

fresh and good concentration, especially in the context of the

Domaine Louis Carillon 

Many Burgundian domaines are steeped in history but few can claim 

to have produced wine since 1653. Lay & Wheeler’s connection to 

the property dates back to 1981, the year Jacques Carillon joined his 

father in the family business. One of the features of the estate’s wines 

is its sparing use of new wood. For example the regular Puligny is 

aged in just 15% new casks, whilst for the Premiers Crus 20% new 

oak is utilised to preserve important floral notes in the wines.

Made from young vines from 1er Cru Macharelles. More restrained 

on the nose than the Puligny villages at this early stage. With white 

peach and spice, this is a broader wine with more gusto.The Carillons 

treat all their wines with equal respect and care and it shows. Should

2008 Meursault Le Limozin, Michel Bouzereau B051 


The Limozin lieu-dit adjoins Premier Cru Genevrières, which itself so 

often epitomises Meursault in all its lacy elegance and filigree 

structure. Bouzereau has consistently produced taut, focused, mineraldriven 

Meursault and their 2008s excel for purity and intensity of 

gently nutty fruit and mineral freshness. 

Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru, Les Suchots, Maison Roche de Bellene 

B285 £222 - 6 bts in bond 

Nicolas Potel has gained a justifiably strong reputation in a short 

number of years. Now producing wine under his own Roche de 

Bellene label he has an incredible range of wines, all of typically high 

quality, due to Nicolas’ loyal relationships in the region. Les Suchots is 

a large and well-sited Premier Cru, demonstrating why the wines of 

this village are often regarded as the holy grail of Red Burgundy.

Domaine Chandon de Briailles is situated in a fine house right in the 

centre of the village of Savigny-Lès Beaune.The domaine has a large 

holding of 13ha or so, encompassing top sites in Savigny itself, 

Pernand-Vergelesses and three separate parcels of Grand Cru 

Corton. Jointly run by Nadine de Nicolay and her daughter Claude 

Nicolay-Drouhin, the property has seen recent rejuvenation, which 

has made the domaine one of the best addresses in the village.

almost their least expensive red, but in terms of value and quality it is 

near the top.

There is no shortage of fine white wines to choose from in 2008, but 

if you are looking for good quality allied to value, then your first port 

of call should be this Bourgogne Blanc from Patrick Javillier. Sourced 

from a single vineyard outside the Meursault AC, but on the same 

soil, this is consistently as fine as many a village Meursault from a 

lesser producer.

Philippe Chavy is one of several with the same family name located in 

the village of Puligny.Together with his wife Graziella, Philippe runs an 

eight hectare estate whose best vineyards are in the communes of 

Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault. Chavy has reverted to natural 

techniques, employing horses to plough the land, hand-harvesting and 

eschewing the use of pesticides and herbicides.

Chambertin. Brothers Frédéric and Emmanuel (Manou) Humbert are

Domaine Lamarche 

Domaine Lamarche has a long history in Burgundy, with the family 

able to trace back their origins in Vosne-Romanée to 1740.The estate 

itself was founded at the beginning of the twentieth century and is 

now managed by François Lamarche along with his wife Marie- 

Blanche, their children and various other relatives.They produce subtle 

and expressive Vosne-Romanées, which are accessible while young, 

though do have capacity for longevity.

is a wine to keep going back to.

From vines ranging from 35 to 55 years old, Grivot has produced a

extends for over 20 years. His style of vinification results in wines that

Domaine Hubert Lamy 

Little did we realise when Olivier spent several weeks working a stage 

at Lay & Wheeler early in the 1990s that he would become one of 

the star performers of the southern Côte de Beaune. Following his 

father Hubert’s retirement, he heads up the winemaking at his family’s 

impeccable St-Aubin domaine and has steered the estate towards a 

fully organic approach. Olivier’s wines are in incredible demand - and 

rightly so - and there are no better Côte de Beaune at these

One of the most respected names in Burgundy, Olivier Leflaive is 

synonymous with wines of consistently fine quality. Cousin to Anne- 

Claude Leflaive of Domaine Leflaive, Olivier has always done more 

than simply buy in young wine from contracted growers or domaines 

to age in his own cellars. As much a producer in his own right, he set 

out from the start to buy grapes from selected sources in order to 

command the winemaking process from the moment of harvest.

nose and a touch of spice. On the palate this is creamy and

add complexity, and this finishes very long and pure. 2013-2018 

Domaine Méo-Camuzet 

Domaine Méo-Camuzet was founded at the beginning of the last 

century and, until the mid 1980s, most of the wine was sold off to 

various négociants. Now managed by Jean Nicholas Méo and 

Christian Faurois, the domaine produces some of the finest wines of 

the Côte d’Or, which reflect the characteristics of their fine terroirs 

and vineyards.

demonstrates the potential of this village in the right hands. On the 

palate, this has crunchy blue and black fruit, with a slatey, mineral edge,

Boudots is as Vosne as Nuits-St-Georges gets: round, fleshy and plump 

,with a discreet structure. From a plot of vines planted in the 1950s 

and 60s, it has real concentration of raspberry fruit, spicy tannins and

2008 Vosne-Romanée les Chaumes, Domaine Méo-Camuzet

This excellent 1er Cru vineyard lies at the foot of 'La Tâche' and 'Les 

Malconsorts' and Méo-Camuzet own 2ha in total. It produces supple 

wines, with real finesse, fullness and charm. An open-knit and highly 

aromatic nose of liquorice, black cherry and rose leads to a richly 

textured palate, which has terrific length. 2013-2019

Domaine de Montille 

An estate renowned for the astonishing quality of its wines and for 

their keeping potential. In addition to the wines from Volnay and 

Pommard for which the domaine is justifiably celebrated, de Montille 

has expanded its Côte de Beaune holdings to include two parcels 

each of Premier Cru Beaune and Grand Cru Corton. In addition, the 

Côte de Nuits now features on the list, with a Clos de Vougeot and 

two sensational cuvées of Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts being the 

brightest stars.

2008 Beaune 1er Cru Aigrots Blanc, Domaine de Montille

No oak here, allowing this wine to demonstrate what good white 

Beaune is all about. Fresh, zippy, herbal notes on the nose, with spicy 

tangerine characters on the palate. Long and juicy on the finish, yet 

elegant, with a chalky mineral nature. 2011-2015

With a lovely, limpid appearance in the glass and Pinot fragrance, this 

is a fantastic introduction to the wines of this great domaine. On the

a classic Beaune, with strawberry, red cherry and sandalwood notes

For me, de Montille is one of the stars of the vintage. Perfumed and 

scented aromas with a refined, poised, natural and seemingly effortless 

palate. A wine of class built on an immaculate attention to detail. De 

Montille have once again raised the bar.

Etienne de Montille describes this as the Grand Cru of Beaune. His 

parcel sits next to Enfant Jésus of Bouchard.This has a perfumed, 

intense nose of lavender and raspberry. In 2008, only a third of the 

bunches were de-stemmed, adding complexity and structure. With a 

lovely mouthfeel, this is a wine of great finesse. 2012-2018

Pretty, feminine and pure, this is demonstrative of the Nuits style and 

speaks of the origins of this domaine.Very floral on the nose, with

undervalued and, in the right hands, every bit as fine as the best of

Moret-Nominé is a micro-négociant, making wines from a mixture of 

grapes sourced from their own vineyards and those selected from 

other producers.The fruit that is selected is of the highest quality and 

grown according to specified principles, such as low yields and the use 

of organic fertilisers.The resultant wines are concentrated and rich, 

demonstrating enticing complexity.

2008 Auxey-Duresses, Moret-Nomine

Auxey-Duresses tucked away to the west of Meursault and hiding 

behind the Montagne de Bourdon can offer some of the best value 

white wines in the Cote.The soil is Argovian limestone, which 

provides the delicacy and finesse.This has a restrained palate, subtle 

but long. Fresh acidity adds a slight citrus zest to the finish.This is 

delicious but for the near term. 2011-2015 

2008 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières, Moret-Nomine

At 16 or so hectares the largest Premier Cru in Puligny-Montrachet 

and fortuitously it shares a similar altitude and soil composition as 

Grand Cru Chevalier-Montrachet.This is a fullish broad wine. Slightly 

buttery but with gentle acidity and good intensity.There is some 

structure here, but it is covered by the depth of the fruit. One can see 

a trace of the Chevalier style here with the weight and volume.

Perrières and Genevrières combined.This is a typical Charmes with its 

plump aspect, a soft fruit character to the palate, almost a floral touch. 

This has a broad aspect with good but soft acidity and a fullish finish.

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg 

Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée Mugneret run this Vosne-Romanée 

estate with great flair, dedication and style. Sophistication, refinement 

and elegance are words that trip off the tongue easily here. As is the 

norm in this cellar, freshness and structure are in seamless harmony 

whilst the domaine’s intelligent use of new oak (30% for villages, 45% 

for Premier Cru and 70% for the estate’s Grand Cru cuvées) creates 

a perfect equilibrium with the fruit.

A blend of five different parcels located in La Columbière, Champs 

Goudins and Le Pré de la Folie. A lively and detailed nose leads

"Chaignots" comes from the word ‘chasne’, old French for chêne 

(oak), meaning that there were originally oak trees in this area. This 

was one of the most impressive Nuits we tasted. Intense ripe, black 

cherry fruit with notes of clove and anise. Full, round flavours and 

ripe, chewy tannins crescendo into a generous and mouth staining 

finish. 2013-2018 

2008 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes, 

Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

The name "Feusselottes" indicates land formed by little depressions 

which can be seen in this parcel of vines. A perfumed and delicate 

nose of violets and sweet spice. Freshening acidity, sappy redcurrant 

flavours and pebbly notes give this wine a lovely vibrancy on the 

palate. This is very Chambolle in style on both the nose, the silken 

tannins on the palate and the long, balanced finish. 2012-2018 

2008 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru, Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

From vines planted in the year 2000 within Ruchottes-Chambertin, 

vinified seperately to produce a slightly lighter more sappy style to the 

official Grand Cru. Restrained, mineral nose with a cool sense of 

ripeness to the pure red berry fruit. Firm, slightly dusty tannins add 

structure to the mid-weight body. Excellent balance, followed by a 

highly elegant and mineral finish. 2012-2016

A 10 hectare estate producing equal quantities of red and white 

wines in and around Chassagne-Montrachet. Jean-Marc Pillot is a 

craftsman, and it is little wonder that a faithful clientele returns to

achieving delightful race and vitality in his white wines, whilst his reds 

display the energy of the best of Chassagne’s red wines.

Nicolas Potel’s wines have been a feature of the Lay & Wheeler 

Burgundy portfolio for many years, as were his father’s before them. 

They have been synonymous with great quality and impressive value

year, Nicolas parted company with the business that bears his name 

and decided to pursue his new venture, Domaine and Maison Roche 

de Bellene. Aside from winemaking, one of the key skills in any

Very concentrated, slightly menthol, edge to the nose.The palate is 

dense and complicated with bitter-sweet, tarry red fruits, overlaid by a 

violet florality.The exceptionally velvety texture of the mid-palate is 

gracefully concluded by a firm, yet well-judged and long, finish.

Unusual, flinty nose, with notes of iron filings, spicy black fruit and new 

oak.The palate is dense and complete, with blueberry and a long

2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, Humbert Frères B151 


Manou Humbert is a remarkably fine winemaker. His wines never lack 

freshness or ripeness; they reveal a finely judged balanced and remain 

true to their origin. I was particularly impressed with his Gevrey- 

Chambertin,Vieilles-Vignes, which showed the volume and class of a 

Premier Cru at, to my mind, a very keen price. Gevrey should offer dark 

fruit, a meaty savoury nuance and a certain solidity and this is exactly 

what this 2008 does. I have no doubt that we could spend weeks in 

Burgundy trying to find a better value Gevrey than this. 

2008 Bourgogne Aligoté, Michel Bouzereau B050 


Bouzereau has enjoyed a fine vintage – we spend time praising his 

superb generous Meursault and often overlook his humble Aligoté, 

which for me is one of the better examples I have tasted from this 

variety. Lively, fresh and streamlined, with mouthwatering fruit and terrific 

leesy complexity, this wine will reward short-term cellarage. Aligoté has 

a lot to offer, particularly when made in such a restrained manner.This is 

something of a staple for me – I am a regular buyer of a case or two.

Buying En Primeur 

An Explanation of Terminology 

"En Primeur" is a French wine trade term for wine which is sold as a 

"future" i.e. prior to being bottled and for delivery at a future date. 

En Primeur wines are usually offered one or two years after the 

vintage. In the case of Bordeaux, the campaign occurs in the spring 

following the harvest, and in the case of Burgundy, two years after. 

These are the two main regions which offer their wines prior to 

bottling but there are also en primeur campaigns for the top wines of 

the Rhone,Tuscany, Piedmont and Port in declared vintages. 

Customers pay the opening in bond price as soon as the wine is 

offered on the market and the wine is shipped in spring or autumn, 

one or two years later, depending on the release policy of the 

respective regions. 

Buying In Bond

Buying in bond allows you to defer the payment of duty and VAT on 

your wine until such a time as you wish to have the wine delivered. 

Wines purchased in bond can be cellared in Lay & Wheeler's 

customer reserves cellar at Vinothèque in Burton-upon-Trent, where 

they will be stored in optimum conditions until you wish to withdraw 

them. 

When you decide to take delivery of the wines you are required to 

pay the prevailing rate of UK duty and VAT, and the prevailing postshipment 

carriage rate.

Quantities: Orders are accepted in unmixed original cases (six/twelve bottles or 

equivalent). 

Discounts: No discount is available on in-bond quotations. 

Carriage: Onward delivery within mainland UK will be charged at the prevailing postshipment 

carriage rate, as published on Lay & Wheeler's website. 

Orders: are accepted subject to stocks remaining unsold. 

Cellarage following shipment: Wines cellared following shipment within Lay & Wheeler's 

Private Customer Reserves facility will be subject to published cellarage charges. 

Availability: Lay & Wheeler endeavours to offer wines in quantities for which it has taken 

and confirmed orders; however, if for any reason beyond its control any wines in this offer 

fail to be supplied by the producer, where possible, similar wines will be offered. 

Alternatively we will undertake to refund any payments with interest (at Fortis Bank base 

rate at the date of order) made in respect of orders placed for the wines. 

Order cancellation/withdrawal: Lay & Wheeler will accept the purchaser giving notice of 

withdrawal from an en primeur or in bond purchase within seven days from the date of 

invoice. Notice must be given in writing and will be effective upon receipt at Lay & 

Wheeler's sales office.
