The Nighthawks
Legendary Blues & Roots Rock Music
LtoR: Mark Stutso, Johnny Castle, Paul Bell, Mark Wenner
The Nighthawks are without a doubt the
best white biker blues band ever. If you have
seen them before I am sure you will attend both
shows. If it is your first time be sure to see them
on Saturday the 16th and plan going back for
more on Sunday the 17th.
What sustains a band for more than three
decades? Not a hit radio band, but a roll-upyour-sleeves
/ drive to the next gig overnight /
carry your own gear up the steps and night after
night make people happy kind of band. One
that makes them dance; sends them home to
come back again—and again. What makes that
kind band stay together through relatively few
personnel changes? Answer: A good idea; a
universal yet somehow unique good idea.
The Nighthawks sought not so much to
reinvent rock and roll, but simply to have it
reinvent itself by taking the original ingredients
and following—if somewhat loosely—the
original recipe. And like good cooks, the individual
personalities involved ultimately affected
the outcome. The band was over 10
years old and had baffled the mainstream industry
before the term “roots rock” was coined
to explain the likes of West Coasters like Los
Lobos and The Blasters. By then, the affiliation
with many of the living blues greats seemed to
brand The Nighthawks a “blues band,” despite
the fact that they played with Carl Perkins as
well as Muddy Waters.
The Nighthawks had its genesis when lead
singer-harmonica player extraordinaire Mark
Wenner returned to his native Washington,
D.C., after six years in New York
City, lured back by the success of
his friend Bobby Radcliff's local
acclaim with a blues band. Mark
joined forces with a very young
Jimmy Thackery and formed The
Nighthawks in 1972. They spent a
couple of years building The
Nighthawks' reputation with a revolving
cast of characters until, in
1974, they decided to get the best
rhythm section the area had to
offer: Jan Zukowski on bass and
Pete Ragusa on drums.
The Nighthawks set off on a
musical mystery tour that took
them to 49 states and a dozen
countries. They played with nearly all the living
blues legends as well as a new generation of
bands sometimes called “the Blue Wave,” and
released several important albums, including
the best-selling Jacks and Kings with Pinetop
Perkins, Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson,
Calvin Jones and Bob Margolin.
The Point Is That You Don’t Have To Spend
A Lot Of Money To Do What You Love
By JIM DWYER,
NY TIMES
Just two words on the
back of a motorcycle, and
half of Midtown Manhattan
was stopping — well, let’s
say slowing — to gawk:
BRASIL
ALASKA
The words are on a
banner that is pinned to an
intricately and preposterously
overloaded motorcycle
that was parked on 44th
Street near Ninth Avenue.
At midlife, Sinomar
Godois Tavares, a father of
three and a hospital manager
in a small city in
Brazil, got divorced, retired, went dancing
and met Edivania Marques, roughly
half his age. Then he bought a motorcycle.
Neither he nor Ms. Marques had
ever driven or ridden one before. They
decided to bike the entire length of South
and North America, and have done so, in
two hauls.
First they went to Ushuaia, in Tierra
del Fuego Province of Argentina, a contender
for the southernmost city in the
world.
A couple of years later, they went the
other way, from Brazil to the northern
end of the Pan-American Highway at
Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Now they are
headed back. “One hundred forty-four
days,” Mr. Tavares, 56, said on Tuesday
night, “36,993 kilometers.” That’s about
23,000 miles.
A few people on the street not only
break stride, but pause to confirm that the
sign means what it says. He produces a
business card that explains, first in Portuguese,
“Velho Doido Motociclista,”
and then in English, “Crazy Oldman
Rider.” He is listed as the pilot, and Ms.
Marques is designated the co-pilot.
Over dinner, they discussed bits of
Sinomar Godois Tavares, the self-styled “Crazy Oldman Rider,” and
Edivania Marques in Midtown. The couple are on a motorcycle
ride between Brazil and northern Alaska.
the trip and their journey, with translation
help from a Brazilian friend living
in New York, Thiago Cardoso.
As a teenager, Mr. Tavares thought
he would hitchhike the world. “But I had
to study,” he said. “I had children. I had
to do everything that life brings to you.”
He began working at 17 and eventually
got a job as manager in a telecom
company and then at a hospital. He
found himself drinking at lunch and
making a mess of things. In 1992, he
stopped. “Maybe it’s not that important
to the story, but it is to me,” he said.
He separated from his wife in 2003.
He met Ms. Marques, now 31, who came
from a poor family and who was working
as a house cleaner while studying at
night. In 2008 he retired, having put in
the 35 years required under the Brazilian
system. By then, he had been planning
for years.
“He got the bike before he got the license,”
Ms. Marques said. “We were
driving in the middle of São Paulo with
20 million people.”
“The motorcycle is not the best, but
it’s what I got: Honda Shadow 750,” Mr.
Tavares said. “The point is that you don’t
14 VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALES.NET
have to spend a lot of
money to do what you
love.”
They made a firm
budget of $80 a day.
Ms. Marques logs
every expense, from
85-cent coffee up, in
their diary. He traces
the route, beginning,
of course, with his
hometown, Morrinhos,
a small city in the
Goiás State of Brazil.
“Morrinhos,” he
said. “Bolivia. Peru.”
Wandering incautiously
in Bolivia,
they were put up for
several nights by a man they learned was
an undercover police officer. “The hospitality
was excellent,” Mr. Tavares said.
“In Peru, we had to pay propina to
the police.” That would be a bribe.
On to Ecuador, and then Colombia,
where Ms. Marques, fed up with being
hassled by people in uniform, began
videotaping their encounters. “She
fought against the guard with big guns,
huge machine guns,” Mr. Tavares said.
In Bogotá, they found a cargo plane
that would carry the motorcycle to
Panama for $900. Ms. Marques sat in the
cockpit, and Mr. Tavares sat with the
cargo. “I could see they used silver tape
on the outside of the plane,” he said. “It
was $150 for the two of us to ride.”
Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Mexico.
“It was 40 degrees centigrade one
night in Mexico, and I was asking why I
had not gone to a hotel,” Mr. Tavares
said. That’s 104 Fahrenheit.
Up the Pacific coast into British Columbia,
then Alaska, Winnipeg, Michigan,
Montreal and New York. All along
the way, they found people thrilled by
their journey, who offered them backyards to pitch their tent
or beds and showers.
They had no GPS.
“That was the point,” Mr. Tavares said. “I always dreamed
of going to New York, and to Vancouver, because I liked the
word Vancouver. And New York City is a soup of people in the
world.”
With the riding season starting out
way early this year, let’s celebrate and
jump right into the beacon of education.
The Buffalo Public schools. Well, let’s
see. The Great Welfare State, That
would be New York, just came up with
this great idea of evaluating teachers.
Cool. Unfortunately, you get graded on
all sorts of topics, one including the
“children” passing on to the next grade.
Cool. Well, you see, Buffalo has about
a 40 percent absentee problem. And
those “children” will count against the
teacher’s score. I figure, if you don’t go
to class, you can’t be taught. Then you
don’t learn. And then you will fail. Too
many failures for the teacher, and after
two years of this gibberish, termination
is a possibility. Wonderful. I can see the
want ads now, “Teachers wanted: not
many kids will show up, so class sizes
will be small Career length approx. 3
years”. Good luck!
Ah...my favorite politician/nonpolitician,
the former Emperor of Erie
county, Chris Collins, who lost his reelection
bid this last November and
stated he will never run for anything
again...made it till March to announce
his bid to go to Congress in ol’ Washington
D.C. Hey, 3 months out of the
politico arena is a lot for a non-politician.
So I head out recently to do a pal a
favor, (cause that’s just how I roll), and
discovered that I had forgotten my cell
phone. No problem...I will just use a
good old fashioned pay phone. Uh, not
quite. First, I could not find one, and
secondly, I don’t know anybody’s phone
number because they are all in my
phone. At home. Love technology!!
Bring back Wilson Farms. 7-11
doesn’t do it for me.
Gettysburg P.A., if you need to add
to your bobble head collection, Gettysburg
National Military Park has the one
for you, a doll of John Wilkes Booth.
Yup, as in the guy who shot and killed
president Abraham Lincoln. Wow!!
What people will do for a buck. I
thought bobble heads were for baseball
players and the like.
Gotta love our big thinkers here in
W.N.Y. The brain trust just came up with
this genius idea: Cover the 33 expressway
along Humboldt Parkway for a
mere half billion dollars. They will supposedly
grow grass, toss in some trees
and make for a nice family destination
for all to enjoy on a nice sun shiny day.
Maybe they can build a hacyey sack
stand so “Occupy Buffalo” can hold a
fundraising hackey sack tournament.
Ahhh, Chippewa Street. The big
Mardi Gras party down there was actually
a fundraiser. Guess between cover
16 VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALES.NET
charges and some cash off the top from
drinks they gave the proceeds to charity.
Well, kinda. The “Boobs for Beads”
promotion gave $3,000.00 to Hospice.
Very nice. And, a Boob job to a 29 year
old buffalo gal, who chose to remain
nameless. Is there something in our
water, or am I the nutty one?
Love to watch the Sabres, but, if I
have to watch that foolish commercial,
you know the one where the gal in the
bikini gets hit in the noggin with the coconut?
After the 50,000th time of seeing
that thing, I want to get into the ad biz. I
would come up with something better
than that. What is that commercial for
anyway??
For the head shaker of the day...The
Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is
suing our friends, the major beer brewers
of America, for, get this, “devastating
alcohol-related problems” in their
community. They want a half billion
dollars too. What’s with the half billion
stuff? Anyway, guess over boozing is
causing all kinds of problems on the rez.
In their lawsuit, they claim their local
store sold over 5 million cans of beer in
2010. Pretty good tally. But, they only
have 12 people living there. These guys
belong in the boozing Hall Of Fame.
Nothing like a good, long cruise on
the bike at moderate speeds. Within the
speed limit. Some people out there just
don’t seem to understand that the I-190,
the I-290 or maybe even the 400 expressway
are numbers of the roadway.
Not the goal of how fast they can get
their crotch rocket to buzz along at. Use
your heads.
And in closing, ride safe, and Ride it
Like You Stole It!!

What’s Wrong With America?
What’s wrong with America? That’s
a pretty big topic. It frightens most people
to face it. They immediately cower
behind the age old expression of “If you
don’t like it, leave.” Is that really reasonable
or just a diversion to protect the
1%? What if you have a clear injustice
that needs fixing and all you want to do
is bring attention to it? Wouldn’t it be
civil and fair to just hear the argument
out from all points of view?
Now, here is a test for you to take.
Hold in your left hand a 16 ounce can of
your favorite beer directly in front of
your face. Then hold a can of Arnold
Palmer Ice Tea in your right hand. Make
sure they are the same distance from
your eyes and 1 to 3 inches apart. Tap
the tops together gently. Look to your
left, then to the right, and then back at
the cans. What do you see? Look close.
Still just two cans? No. Wrong. Read
the tops. One has a nickel deposit. The
other does not.
Here’s the Parallel Thinking..., that
is what’s wrong with New York. That is
the perfect, simple, lowest common denominator
of how screwed up we are. If
the idea of a nickel deposit on an easily
recycled container, an aluminum can in
this case, is able to be circumvented or
bypassed through back room bullshit or
bribes (campaign contributions and lobbying),
it sets the tone for an entire government.
Can’t we just have a simple law
such as 5 cent deposit on cans? Isn’t this
good enough for everyone? Why do
some companies feel they are above it?
If I were Arnold Palmer, I would be embarrassed
by such antics and refuse the
use of my name until the local distributor/bottler
and everyone else got in line
and did the right thing. (If anyone
knows Arnold, you can tell him I said
that or forward this article to him.)
Which is in this case, not ask for an exemption
to the deposit law. As I understand
it, the excuse was they are not
carbonated. Who gives a shit? It’s a can.
The same thing applies to plastic
bottles. A water bottle has a deposit; a
18 VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALES.NET
Gatorade bottle has no deposit. Plain
and simple, it’s a beverage and if the
politicians and law makers don’t have
the brains or balls to write and enforce
fair and equal laws on something as simple
as a can, what chance do we have in
getting a fair tax code, gun laws or anything
else for that matter? Slim and
none. Until everything is done with an
open forum, a complete explanation and
consequences for failure, nothing will
change in this county, the state or the
country.
My own attempt to “Fight the
Power” (a great Isley Brother’s song)
was an eye opener. It’s like they don’t
even hear you and know that no one else
will help you. Fortunately, science and
time are on my side. “Ice Boom Theory”
continues to gain followers and
soon I will have an angry army of anglers
fed up with slimy green snot on
their lures. We shall prevail and restore
the Lower Great Lakes to their former
glory. In the meantime, we can just pon-
der the difference of those 2 cans and imagine the reasoning
behind such a blatantly stupid exclusion. If they felt
they could get away with something as in your face as that,
and they do, imagine what other great loopholes people are
enjoying that we don’t know about. Sure there is a lot of
great stuff to be happy for in America but that does not
mean we aren’t allowed to complain. If there’s a problem
we fix it. If it’s not a problem we chrome it. Whenever
someone tells you “If you don’t like it, leave” it is most
likely that you are threatening their little secret goldmine.
Look closer and see what they are hiding.
As most of you may know I had
the pleasure to work a short time in the
motorcycle world as a salesman for
American Harley-Davidson on Erie
Avenue in North Tonawanda. During
my time there, I met some of the greatest
people I’ve ever met and most of
my closest friends are in the motorcycle
community or industry.
There are a lot of nice people
in the motorcycle community
and I’ve had the pleasure to meet
one of the nice and friendliest
guys in the industry while employed
at American Harley-
Davidson. Ken Caves is his name
and Drag Specialties is his game.
Ken is the Rep for Drag Specialties
and is one of the friendliest
guys you can meet which is probably
why he has so many friends
in the motorcycle community and industry.
Drag Specialties is Ken’s dream
job and how many of us can say we
have the dream job we wanted. When
I first met Ken he was nothing but upbeat
and positive and proud of his
product and it showed. Ken and I
Served 28 years in the U.S.Air Force, Works for The Kantor Law Firm Personal Injury & Motorcycle
Accident Attorneys as Marketing Director. Been in the saddle riding for 41 years.
bonded right away and from that day
on we were friends. Ken will tell that
most of his friends are his dealers and
this is a big reason Ken loves his job
so much. “He feels he is one of the
luckiest guys in the world”. Ken likes
being on the road and his job were is
to go out and call on five, six seven
friends a day. It’s one of those jobs
where you get up and look forward to
going to work Ken says.
Like a lot of us, Ken didn’t just fall
into his dream job by accident. It was a
journey for him through the world of
motorcycling that began when he was
12 years old. His brother and ken
would see choppers going down the
street and they couldn’t wait to make
their own.
So they didn’t wait they started to
make choppers out of sting-ray bikes.
Then when he was 13 he got his first
motorcycle, a Suzuki TS 125 and
turned it into an MX bike by removing
the injector, tearing the
lights off and setting it up for racing.
Once he started racing, he
would buy almost any junk bike
he could find and fix up. Ken had
1959 AJS, a 1956 BSA Gold
Star, a 250 Zundapp, and a Sachs
MX bike.
Kens was 18 when he got his
first Harley-Davidson and it was
a 1959 Pan-Head. By then Ken
was a local hot-shoe, racing both
motorcross and dirt track on different
bikes, racing on the weekends and
working during the week.
Ken started his career working on
the road at the early age of 18. Working
for a company that sold engine rebuilding
equipment and on top of that
Continued on next page...
Continued from previous page...
Ken and his brother also had a business
where they built bikes and motors. His
brother did it on a full time bases and
Ken did it part-time. Kens full time job
came to end and he took a job with a
builder in Rochester, NY. It was nice
job, but he felt stuck in one place. The
Parts Unlimited rep used to come in
the shop and Ken was envious of him
and wanted to get back on the road
again. So he sent an email to Drag Specialties
and the company responded. It
took a few months, but he was hired
and lucky enough to get the territory
covering Buffalo the Pennsylvania
border.
Ken is a true biker and can prove it
if you have ever seen his stable of
bikes, but his favorite is a 74 Super-
Glide he customized himself. Ken is
lover of heavy metal music “this is
where our friendship parts” but he
keeps trying to convert me “NOT”. His
favorite heavy metal band is Iron
Maiden; he loves their music so he decided
to build a bike in tribute to Iron
Maiden. He completely customized the
bike and then brought the bike and the
album cover “Live after Death” to
Kram. Kram is a legendary painter and
has done a lot of cover bikes on several
magazines.
Ken had found out that Iron
Maiden was coming to a local amusement
park for a concert and decided to
use his new custom bike of Iron
Maiden along with a few friends by
riding up and telling security he was
with the band. “Yes” this is true and
security let them in and the band came
out to see the bike and yes the also end
up back stage with the band for the
whole show. “Way to Go Ken”. Oh!
One more thing the band put his bike
on their web-site. The bike continues to
get him in the Iron maiden concerts to date.
“To know Ken is to like Ken” He
is the friendliest guy you will know
and would do anything for anyone especially
a friend. Drag Specialties as a
company may not realize what they
have with a Ken Caves, or maybe they
do. Ken’s experience as a builder and a
long time rider helps him be the outstanding
rep for Drag and individual in
the motorcycle industry.
That’s why dealers respect and
welcome Ken in their dealerships for
his integrity and knowledge of his
product and most of all the respect and
friendship of his motorcycle peers.
Ken has a great passion for motorcycling
and most of all people and I’m
glad that we had met and that we are
very good friends today “He’s one
class Guy”.
With his passion there’s nothing
else Ken would rather be doing but
traveling from dealer to dealer to visit
with his friends.
Investment
Advice
If you had purchased $1,000 of
shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, >
you would have $49.00 today!
If you had purchased $1,000 of
shares in AIG one year ago, you would
have $33.00 today.
If you had purchased $1,000 of
shares in Lehman Brothers one year
ago, you would have $0.00 today.
But, if you had purchased $1,000
worth of beer one year ago, drank all
the beer, then turned in the aluminum
cans for the recycling refund, you
would have received $214.00.
Based on the above, the best current
investment plan is to drink heavily
& recycle.
Iraq's Motorcycle Rebels
By JOHN LELAND,
NY Times
BAGHDAD — Just before dusk they
begin to arrive, first the motor scooters,
then the bigger bikes rolling up in a
cloud of leather and noise. For an hour
or two each Friday, on a wide boulevard
beside the Tigris River, the complexities
of Baghdad life give way to a few universal
questions: Can I pop a wheelie
when people are watching? Can I sneak
out of the house without my family
noticing? And wouldn’t it be cool if there
were girls here?
On a recent Friday, Ali Hamra, 28,
sat on his motorcycle, watching a crowd
of about 75 cyclists doing tricks on the
machines that are the loves of their lives.
Some rode standing upright on their
seats or handlebars; others pulled the
front wheel in the air; still others spun
their rear wheels to create clouds of
black smoke. In the United States these
tricks would barely turn an eye, but in
Iraq the bravado looks like the baby steps
of a nascent youth culture, modeled
largely — and imperfectly — on a vision
from abroad.
“I feel I am a rebel,” Mr. Hamra
said, displaying a forearm tattooed with
the logo of the rapper 50 Cent. “We took
this as an American style. It’s like the
idea of being warriors. Motorcycle peo-
ple listen to rap or rock — they have
their own warrior style.”
He added: “In America the rebels
have their own streets and coffee shops.
So we are following them.”
His friend Ahmed Hassan, 23, wore
a Che Guevara T-shirt he had bought in
Kurdistan. By his account, he was one of
a handful of riders who started the impromptu
motorcycle shows in 2002, before
the war and sectarian violence drove
the riders back into their homes. Now, as
security has improved in the last two
years, they are back in force, and Mr.
Hassan has become something of a
minor celebrity, appearing on the news
and earning the title Ahmed Damages for
his ability to repair broken bikes.
“It makes me happy to be an idol, a
famous person to them,” he said, seated
on his bright green dirt bike. “A lot of the
original people left the country because
they were sick of the security situation,
getting harassed by the police. Now I’m
teaching a new generation how to do
tricks.”
Sunni and Shiite, the riders came
from all parts of the city — defying parents,
avoiding the police and hoping for
safe passage through a city still dotted
with danger zones. A police cruiser kept
them under close watch.
Haider Ahmed, 19, parked his
scooter by the side of the road to watch
30 VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALES.NET
his friends. His family does not approve
of his being part of this scene, he said, so
he had to sneak out of the house. His
brother had threatened to crush his
scooter if he caught him in the shows,
out of fear for Mr. Ahmed’s safety.
“When we’re here, we forget everything
around us,” Mr. Ahmed said.
“Sometimes the police come and stop us,
but we come back.” Twice the police
stopped him for not having the right license
plate and fined him the equivalent
of $25.
Mr. Ahmed, who works in a wire
factory, said he spent all of his money
and spare time on his bike, as others here
do. A trick can take a month to learn and
be over in a few seconds. Everybody
tries to do a new trick every week.
“It’s dangerous, and it’s not easy for
anyone to learn and dare to do tricks, so
that’s why I feel special and different
from others,” he said. But he tempered
any rebellious swagger with practical
caution. “When I come here,” he said,
“I’m always afraid someone will catch me.”
As the sun went down, the riders
seemed unwilling to return to their daily
lives. One more trick, a last stunt in front
of their friends — it was what they lived
the rest of the week for, said Ammar
Khathim, 22, who wore a T-shirt that
said Street Boys.
Continued on next page...
Continued from previous page...
Mr. Khathim played down the idea of a motorcycle counterculture.
“We are not rebelling against anyone, just the traffic
police and the police,” he said.
Still, he added, riding in Iraq came with particular challenges.
Replacement parts are nearly impossible to come by, so
the riders had to worry about damaging their bikes.
And for all the riders’wistful thoughts of “The Wild One”
or “Easy Rider,” one essential element was missing from the
scene. Because the sexes in Iraq do not mingle in public for religious
reasons, the shows have been a strictly male affair. Riders
who have girlfriends say they cannot ride together on the
men’s motorcycles.
“It’s a babe magnet,” said Messar al-Saffar, 33, speaking
English, “but in Iraq, it’s hard to get your girlfriend on the
back.”
He added: “It helps with the stress. You cannot imagine.
When we go on the highway we forget it and loosen up.”
A SEAL WALKS INTO
A BAR
A seal walks into a
bar and asks the
bartender for a drink.The
bartender asks the seal,
"What's your pleasure?"
The seal replies,
"Anything but Canadian
Club."
AN IRISHMAN WALKS
INTO A BAR
An Irishman walks
into a bar in Dublin,
orders three pints of
Guinness
and sits in
the back of
the room,
drinking a sip
out of each one in turn. When he finishes
them, he comes back to the bar and orders
three more. The bartender asks him, "You
know, a pint goes flat after I draw it; it would
taste better if you bought one at a time." The
Irishman replies, "Well, you see, I have two
brothers. One is in America, the other in
Australia, and I'm here in Dublin. When we all
left home, we promised that we'd drink this
way to remember the days when we drank
together." The bartender admits that this is a
nice custom, and leaves it there.
The Irishman becomes a regular in the
bar,and always drinks the same way: ordering
three pints and drinking them in turn. One day,
he comes in and orders two pints. All the other
regulars notice and fall silent. When he
comes back to the bar for the second round,
the bartender says, "I don't want to intrude on
your grief, but I wanted to offer my
condolences on your great loss." The Irishman
looks confused for a moment, then a light
dawns in his eye and he laughs. "Oh, no," he
says, "Everyone's fine. I've just quit drinking."
BEER WITH HORMONES
Yesterday, scientists in the United States
revealed that beer contains small traces of
female hormones.
To prove their theory, they fed one
hundred men twelve pints of beer and
observed that 100% of them started talking
nonsense and couldn't drive.
SMELLED LIKE A DISTILLERY
A man who smelled like a distillery
flopped on a subway seat next to a priest. The
man's tie was stained, his face was plastered
with red lipstick, and a half empty bottle of
gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He
opened his newspaper and began reading.
After a few minutes, the disheveled guy turned
to the priest and asked, "Say, father, what
causes arthritis?"
"Mister, it's caused by loose living, being
with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol
and a contempt for your fellow man."
"Well I'll be." the drunk muttered,
returning to his paper.
The priest, thinking about what he had
said, nudged the man and apologized. "I'm
very sorry.I didn't mean to come on so strong.
How long did you have arthritis?"
"I don't have it father. I was just reading
here that the Pope does."
Princess said, “No!!!” And the Prince lived
happily ever after and rode motorcycles and
banged skinny long-legged big-titted broads
and hunted and fished and raced cars and
went to naked bars and dated women half his
age and drank whiskey, beer and Captain
Morgan and never heard bitching and never
paid child support or alimony and banged
cheerleaders and kept his house and guns
and ate spam and potato chips and beans
and blew enormous farts and all his friends
and family thought he was frikin’ cool as hell
and he had tons of money in the bank and
left the toilet seat up.
The end.
A WOMAN'S POEM:
Before I lay me down to sleep,
I pray for a man who's not a creep,
One who's handsome, smart and strong.
One who loves to listen long,
One who thinks before he speaks,
One who'll call, not wait for weeks.
I pray he's rich and self-employed,
And when I spend, won't be annoyed.
Pull out my chair and hold my hand..
Massage my feet and help me stand.
Oh send a king to make me queen.
A man who loves to cook and clean.
I pray this man will love no other.
And relish visits with my mother.
A MAN'S POEM:
I pray for a deaf-mute gymnast
nymphomaniac with
big tits who owns a bar on a golf course,
and loves to send me fishing and drinking.
This doesn't rhyme and I don't give a shit.

Eyewear For Riding!.... Many Choices Available
By Dennis M. Bunz, Prop.
Style “N” Eyes
Email: dennis@styleneyes.com
Riding, is the most enjoyable activity
you like to do, you have all of the
necessary accessories that make you
proud of that great looking two
wheeler. Too many riders fail to address
one of the most important aspects
of safe riding by depriving themselves
of safe, adequate riding eyewear. Bikers,
spend a lot of time and money accessorizing
their bikes, but fail to
spend a little more money on safe comfortable
eyewear that is specifically
made for motorcycle riding; these
choices are available in prescription
and non prescription.
How many times have you been
riding along and just can’t keep the
wind from causing your eyes to tear?
No matter what you do your eyes keep
tearing, and fogging your eyeglasses.
In addition, how many times have you
ridden or seen someone riding in the
dark of night with their sunglasses on?
The answer to that question is they didn’t
want to spend the extra money for a
second pair of glasses! Riders cannot
take that chance on a dark road when
an animal or car comes out from
nowhere. Your reaction time is severely
reduced by wearing the wrong
type of lens for night time riding.
As more people become riders,
there is a growing need for riding eyewear.
It is just not practical to wear
your everyday eyeglasses and expect
the lenses not to fog up, or your eyes
not to tear causing blurred vision. Your
everyday eyeglasses are not designed
for riding motorcycles. On the other
hand, riding with wrap around cheap
sunglasses that you bought at the dept.
store may be OK for daytime, and look
cool, but, all too often riders will wear
these glasses at night, becoming a danger
on the road.
However, eyewear specifically
made for motorcycle riding; is the solution.
As motorcycle riding popularity
increases, the need for adequate eye
protection increases as well, not to
mention eyewear that keeps wind out,
and is attractive, comfortable, and safe,
in all types of lighting and conditions.
The best eyewear available specifically
designed for riding, is manufactured
by 7 Eye (formerly known as
Panoptx) and Wiley X. Both manufacturers
have many different frame
choices available for men and women,
and come in a variety of colors and
lens styles that will address every
rider’s style and preferences.
The most popular and versatile
lens choice is the changeable lens, or
commonly called Transition® Each
manufacturer has their own name for
the same thing. Transition® lenses
change according to the available
amount of light. In bright sunlight, they
will turn from clear to be close to a
sunglass tint then, as the day loses
light, the lenses will get progressively
lighter, thus eliminating the need to
stop and change glasses.
The most important feature of
these frames is their vented, foam-
lined eyecup that forms a seal around
your face, thus eliminating the air that
forces its way to your eyes causing
tearing. The vented feature is what
makes this style of eyewear perfect for
the motorcyclist, at any speed, for both
the rider and passenger. Better yet, the
foam lined eyecup is removable and
your glasses now are the perfect sunglass,
thus no need to carry another
pair of sunglasses.
Both 7 Eye & Wiley X have these
designs available in a wide variety of
shapes, sizes and colors. Most of these
designs can be made in your prescription
as well. We can make your prescription
in any style of lens, including
single vision distance or progressive
no line bifocals.
Wearing the proper eyewear
makes you safer and more comfortable
on the road.
EDEN CHOPPER CLASS #12
edenchopperclass.com
The crew has been crushing
it for the last 3 months to
beat the calendar and transform
their shared vision from
paper into steel and horse
power.You all know that goals
are a tough but good thing.
Some are long term and others
short, but the ones that only a
group can accomplish are the
most difficult to pull off.
When you think about that
championship ball team or
fund raising committee that
you have been part of, I am
certain you can relate. My kids
just never quit or disappoint
when it matters the most. It is
simply will and determination
that drives them forward when
all their buddies are riding
their quads, hunting, fishing
and or camping while they are showing up
to the shop for work at 6:00 am on a Saturday.
In typical United States fashion,
their efforts this year have paid big dividends.
The two awards they just received,
Overall and DesignAnd Innovation, at this
year’s DSCCC competition, are great to
help validate our sponsors’beliefs in what
we do. But that is not what motivates any
of the kids that participate. They are motor
heads and the mechanical/technical world
is where they are comfortable. Every day
in the shop means a new learning opportunity
and experience for them. For example,
imagine being Zak Kordal, Eden’s
only senior build team member this year,
who just completed building his fourth Vtwin
before he graduated high school!
What a jumpstart on the post high school
world. Because of his mechanized passion
and raw determination to learn every/anything,
he truly has unlimited opportunities
as he enters adulthood and will be sorely
missed by the team and myself.
Early on in the design phase, a killer
wheel set was donated by Al Hannah,
which prompted this year’s build to be the
students’first attempt at a full-blown chop-
per. The bike had to fit the wheels. Needless
to say, they bit off a ton to chew. After
Scott Fentzke; owner of Performance Fabrication,
removed the Avon rubber so we
could replace with a killer set of Dunlops,
the students’ designs were finalized.
Throughout the duration of the design
phase the kids had been fabricating a new
frame jig, materials courtesy of Ironworkers
Local 6 and Alp Steel. Also, the addition
of two modern day manual lathes that
were generously donated allowed the team
to strive to reach some goals we simply
could never achieve prior to this year.
Moving forward the kids fabricated the
entire frame including the axle adjuster
blocks that were water jet cut courtesy the
boys at E.B. Ironart. Our chosen Sporty
power plant, donated by Gail Krone, had a
nasty crack in the tranny portion of the
case so the kids elected to cut it and the
primary mounts off, and fabricated an entire
rear mounting assembly for the iron
head bottom end. Jared Nowak and Zak
Kordal had the misfortune of being elected
to weld the new mounts to the cast cases.
Never fun-but they did a damn fine job
and only created one minor crack that
44 VIEW HARD TALES ONLINE WWW.HARDTALES.NET
needed to be finessed by Mr.
Hammond. Phil Wallace from
Powdered Illusions, powdered
the bored cylinders and honed
the cases at Duraplating. Jamie
Schultz took over and threw a
coat of BASF clear on the
cases and covers. The modified
motor and team were then
Lockport bound to build the
engine at B.A. Enterprises.
The internals were not too bad,
so after a good cleaning the
balancing/assembly went
pretty smooth. Back in the
shop the kids finished up fabricating
the sheet metal and
control systems as well as
pulling all the wire for electrical
necessities. Jared Nowak
and Eric ”BIG SCHREIBS”
Schreiber started machining a
wicked sprocket shaft extension which
would allow the kids to run a 300 series
tire on the back of this year’s sled. Alex
Bednarz, who is also a senior and multiyear
club member, finished designing and
tooling the leather for the bikes saddle and
started stitching it to seat pan. Final assembly
began as paint was going down on
the tins courtesy of Schultz and Sons. We
got the kid’s newest creation all pieced together
and brought to life by mid-March.
Small items need to be handled but the
bulk of the work for the “EVIL” bike is
done. Multiple test and tune sessions, and
the fabrication of a sprocket shaft extension
brace, over the next couple of weeks
should get all the loose ends tied up.
I need to give credit where it is due so
here goes. Although we had over 50 kids
get their hands dirty on this year’s machine,
the eight build team members that
represented the collective group at the
DSCCC were Zak Kordal, Jared Nowak,
Wyatt Bromley, Max Schreiber, Howie
Hoelscher, Bryan Haley, Andrew Maggs
and Clayton Armbruster. Although they
were not build team members, Joe Haier,
Alex Bednarz, Scott Nowak, Ryan Smith
and Lisa Bernard made huge contributions
helping to get the build completed on time.
I am always amazed that my students’parents
and community help and support the
Class/Club more and more each year. We
took eighteen people out to the DSCCC
this year to represent WNY!And each and
every one of them did a fine job showing
the twenty thousand people in attendance
what our small town/school/community is
all about. Each of the articles I have written
provides an insight into how important
our sponsors are. If I was an English
teacher maybe I could provide you the
reader with the words that would give our
sponsors justice, but that is not the case.
Eden’s Chopper Class/Club simply would
not exist without their support. Many of
them are facing some tough times right
now. Please look at the superior products/services
that they offer. They are the
best of the best and deserve your consideration
before buying cheap from China.
Five years have passed since Eden’s
Chopper Class/Club began. What began
as a small group of dedicated, hardworking
motorcycle focused students has been
transformed into a growing family of students,
parents and sponsors who all understand
and believe that a strong technical
skill set is the key for future success at any
level. All mechanical things, including Vtwins,
break. The level of complexity of
that particular mechanical device determines
the level of complexity that you will
need to use with problem –solving/trouble
shooting the issue. And that my friends,
cannot be learned by simply reading books
or participating in on-line classes. Your
hands need to be dirty and it might even
occasionally smell bad but that type of experience
is why my students remember. It
is not a passage in a book it is a passage in
time and in their lives.
From a personal perspective, this
lucky Irishman literally has the best job in
the world. My students consistently amaze
me. My family, friends and sponsors unconditionally
support not only me but my
students. And there is no end in sight.
Thanks to all of your help, a legacy and
tradition has been created in the Western
New York motorcycle community. Let’s
all keep pushing the limits to see just
where the kids and Eden Chopper Class
will end up in five more years. The students
and I sincerely thank all of you for
your support throughout this ride. Enjoy
the early spring riding season.
Keep the shiny side up
