Screening Varieties for Resistanceto Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl VirusMonica Ozores-Hampton, Phil Stansly,Eric Simonne, Eugene McAvoy , Steven Sargent andJeremy Edwards.

Facts: Tomato Yellow Leaf CurlVirus (TYLCV)‣ Is the worst tomato disease, because can have tremendousimpact in yields.‣ The disease is induced by anumber of begomoviruses, transmitted by the whiteflyBemisia tabaci.‣ Leaf symptoms include chloroticmargins, small leaves which arecupped, thick and rubbery. Themajority (up to 90%) of flowersabscise after infection.

In order to lessen the incidence of the TYLCV(There are no wild species as reservoir forTYLCV during the summer):1. Tomato Free Periods2. Eradication of volunteer3. Peppers whitefly controlNow, if the virus become morestrong another tool is “resistantvarieties”.

The TYLCV resistant genetic materialis coming from Israel a dry weatherconditions.ObjectivesTo evaluate the horticultural performanceof the TYLCV varieties such as yield, fruit qualities and post-harvestcharacteristics under South Florida fieldconditions.

Results

Spring 2007 vs. 2008 & 09‣ Whitefly pressure was heavier in Spring 2007than in Spring 2008.‣ In 2007, the average whitefly count was 9.9 ±0.38 (mean ± SE) adult per leaf, as comparedto 0.8 ± 1.04 adult per leaf in 2008 and 09.‣ Therefore, number of TYCLV symptomaticplants was lower in 2008 and 09 than 2007.

Spring 2007, Tygress very firm, but had lowcolor rating.2. Spring 2008, the firmness fruit Sec 28, but hadthe lowest color rating. The most firm andhighest color rating among the roma varietieswas Shanty.3. Spring 2009, there were no differences in colorand firmness, pH, TTA , pH and soluble solidscontent among TYLCV varieties content in thesecond harvest, except for few varieties.
