Coffee break for new nation
The simple act of grabbing a cup of
coffee between breaks at last
month’s Launceston Convention will
help launch a new nation.
Funds of $2,646.55 from the
convention’s Gold Coin Coffee Stand will
help build a primary school in the new
country of South Sudan.
South Sudan will officially gain
independence on the 9th July and it will
have to start from scratch.
Land has already been purchased,
plans are being drawn up and $20,000
is needed to get stage 1 of the project
underway.
Education will be the key to achieving
long-term peace, stability and
development in South Sudan.
had finished, registrations were
being invited for next year’s Perth
“Wouldn’t it be great if other clubs
around Australia could run some projects
to help raise the balance of the
$20,000,” said Riverside Lion David
Vautin.
To learn more or to take up the
challenge, ring David’s wife Coby,
co-ordinator of Mercy Projects (Tas), on
“We believe in empowerment through
education, which will lead to there being
no need to send refugees to Australia
and other places,” said Coby.
“We encourage the use of local
products and the employment of local
people.”
GILLIAN’S JOY
There were two people Youth of the Year
winner Gillian Mahony just had to see
straight after her Launceston triumph –
her parents who had specially flown
from Perth to support her.
Minutes before she had told of her love for
her parents.
Melbourne-born and Perth-raised Gillian
took off a closely fought contest from Nathan
Barnden (N Districts), Brooke Snow (Q
Districts), Max Rintoul (T District), Raynor
Hicks (C Districts) and Stuart McKenzie (V
Districts). Nathan Barnden won the public
speaking prize.
As part of her prize in the contest, now in
its 14th year and sponsored by NAB, Gillian
wins a trip to the UK or the chance to
volunteer overseas in a youth-oriented
project. Youth of the Year is the longestrunning
community partnership with which
NAB has been involved.
