<strong>BASKETBALL</strong> <strong>RULES</strong>The GameThere will be two teams of five players each with an unlimited number of substitutes. It consists of 4quarters, 8 minutes each. A field goal counts for 2 points. A free throw counts for 1 point.HANDLING THE BALLA player may:Throw, bat, bounce, hand or roll the ball to a teammate or throw for goal (basket).Hold the ball for 5 seconds in and out-of-bounds, and 10 seconds on a free throw.Use an unlimited dribble and take any number of steps while dribbling.Take or tap the ball from an opponent.Take the following number of steps without being called for travelling:1. Use two steps after receiving the ball in the air, on the run, or after a bounce or dribble.2. Use either foot as a pivot foot after coming to a stop on a first step.3. Use either foot as a pivot foot after catching while standing still.4. Use the rear foot as the pivot foot after coming to a two-step stop when catching the ball inthe air, at the end of a run or dribble. If one foot is ahead of the other, only the rear foot maybe used.5. A player may use the pivot foot when releasing the ball for a pass, try at the goal or dribble.The ball must leave the hands before the pivot foot again touches the floor.TIE BALLWhen 2 players of opposing teams place one or both hands firmly on the ball; the ball may be on the floor,in the air or in someone’s hands. The hands are considered to be part of the ball. A tie must be madewithout personal contact with body of the opponent.JUMP BALLIn this method of putting the ball in play, the ball is tossed up between 2 opponents at center court. This isdone only at the beginning of the game.ALTERNATING POSSESSIONIn the case where there is a tie ball or an indecisive call by the referee, the alternating possession rule is ineffect, rather than the jump ball. Upon the opening tip-off the arrow points to the team who did not getpossession. From this point, the arrow alternates showing the change in possession with each tie ball. Theball is taken at the side for a throw-in.The rule is in effect for the following situations:1. Tie ball.2. Double violation.3. Two opponents simultaneously cause the ball to go out-of-bounds or if there is doubt as towhom last touched it.4. A ball in-bounds and not in possession of a player when time-out is taken for injury.5. After a double foul.6. Holding the ball for more than 5 seconds in-bounds.


OUT - OF - BOUNDSThe ball is awarded out-of-bounds after:1. A player causes the ball to go out-of bounds.2. A violation.3. A successful free throw.4. A successful goal.5. A player goes out of the court (steps on the line).VIOLATIONS (Definitions)An infringement of a rule for which the ball is put in play from out-of bounds. The sideline is used for allviolations except when a ball or a player with the ball goes over the end line.HANDLILNG THE BALL VIOLATIONS1. Kicking the ball.2. Striking the ball with fists.3. Travelling.4. Holding the ball more than 5 seconds in and out-of-bounds, 10 seconds at the free throw line,taking more than 10 seconds to cross the center line with the ball.5. Over and Back: once the ball is taken across the centerline by a team, they may not bring theball back over the centerline.3 SECONDS VIOLATION1. Any player without the ball remaining in the free throw lane for more than 3 seconds whileher team is in possession of the ball in the attacking half of the court. If a player receives theball in less than 3 seconds, this restriction does not apply and the player may play it normally.2. If there is a double violation, there will be a jump ball between the two people involved, at thenearest restraining circle.SCORINGA field goal (any basket shot scored from anywhere on the court) scores 2 points. A foul shot (a shotawarded to a player when fouled) counts 1 point. A player may get 2 foul shots if fouled in the act ofshooting (and misses), 1 if fouled on the court or if fouled in the act of shooting but the player makes thebasket or 1 + 1 if the team is in bonus situation.PENALTY – on the 7 th foul committed by a team.1. One free throw is awarded to the opponents, if basket is missed, the ball is in play. If thebasket is made, the shooter gets a second shot. This is called bonus situation or one and one.2. If the foul occurs against a player who is in the act of shooting, two free throws are awarded ifthe player misses the field goal. If the player makes the field goal in spite of the foul, thebasket counts and the player gets 1 free throw.3. If a double foul occurs (i.e. a foul for each team), there are no free throws awarded but thealternating possession rule is in effect.4. In lining up for a free throw, 2 defensive players stand nearest the base line. Next to themstand 2 of the offensive players and then again two defensive players.
