Drs. Mathewson and Bonserforesaw the need to help nursesat Marshall who did not havethe same privileges as their owndaughters who became nurses.Over the years, this dream for thefuture has been fulfilled many timesover.Established in 1991 to honor thepassing <strong>of</strong> Dr. John Mathewson, thescholarship fund has assisted seventy-<strong>two</strong>(72) nursing students easethe burden <strong>of</strong> education expenses.The program works to support nursestaffing at Marshall while continuingto provide an educational resourcethat directly benefits both the studentsand Marshall’s patients. TheHonor-A-Nurse event held at MarshallHospital each year also helpsto fund the scholarship programand supports this vital mission.The Mathewson-Bonser NursingScholarships are awarded annuallyeach fall through the generoussupport <strong>of</strong> UNION BANK and theMarshall Foundation for CommunityHealth nursing endowment. The “Employees for a HealthierCommunity” project kicked <strong>of</strong>f at Marshall Medical Center thisFall to raise awareness <strong>of</strong> the vital services provided by the nonpr<strong>of</strong>itcommunity, and to help raise essential funds locally.The Nonpr<strong>of</strong>it Partnership has been working on the plans for thisproject since November 2008 and includes Big Brothers, Big Sisters<strong>of</strong> El Dorado County; Boys & Girls Club <strong>of</strong> El Dorado County; CASA<strong>of</strong> El Dorado County; Family Connections; Food Bank <strong>of</strong> El DoradoCounty; Marshall Foundation for Community Health; M.O.R.E.; NewMorning Youth and Family Services; Partners in Care; Sierra LawChaplaincy; Snowline Hospice; and The Center for Violence FreeRelationships.For the first time, Marshall Medical Center employees will have anunusual opportunity to support twelve charities <strong>with</strong> one pledge forone year and make a significant difference. All twelve organizationsmake such a significant impact in our community.“An added benefit to this collaboration,” stated Karen Good, executivedirector <strong>of</strong> Marshall Foundation, “is that some <strong>of</strong> the MarshallEmployees or their family members access services providedby these organizations.”The success <strong>of</strong> the Marshall “Employees for a Healthier Community”will help to open the doors to other employers in the community.
