WelcomeThe <strong>Ontario</strong> <strong>Sires</strong> <strong>Stakes</strong> (OSS) is a breeding and racing incentive program that was establishedfor the standardbred industry in 1974 by the <strong>Ontario</strong> Government. Valued at over $20.4million in 2005, the objective of the program is to promote the breeding of standardbredhorses in <strong>Ontario</strong> and to provide economic incentives for breeders, owners and trainers tobreed, buy and race horses in <strong>Ontario</strong>.Since its first race 32 years ago, the OSS program has evolved into the leading sires stakesprogram in North America. <strong>Ontario</strong> sires consistently rank among the best in North America.The 2004 OSS season marked the 12th consecutive year that the OSS led all sires stakesjurisdictions in North America in the production of single-season winners of $100,000 or more.<strong>Ontario</strong>-breds have captured countless other stakes events including victories in Sweden’s ElitloppTrot, the Nat Ray Trot, two of the last five Hambletonians and a total of 17 Breeders Crowns.The OSS is conducted during a seven month period from May to November at <strong>Ontario</strong>’s 16 harnessracing tracks (see 2005 schedule on Page 47). The program is split into two tiers of racing,Gold and Grassroots Series. Each tier has a series of races for two and three-year-old trottersand pacers, divided into colt and filly divisions. In 2005 there will be 40 Gold Series events culminatingwith the $2.4 million Super Final Championships on Saturday, November 12 at Toronto’sWoodbine Racetrack. The 48 event Grassroots schedule will be capped by the $800,000Championship Night for two and three-year-olds at Georgian Downs on Saturday, October 15.To be eligible to the OSS program, foals must be sired by a stallion registered and standingin <strong>Ontario</strong>. The nomination payment is due in the horse’s yearling year and to maintain itseligibility, sustaining payments are due for the two and three-year-old seasons if the horseis expected to race in the OSS (see payment schedule page 45).The Trillium Series, worth a total of $870,000 in 2004, is also a part of the OSS program. Itwas established in 1988 and was designed to encourage the purchasing of well-bred filliesand to promote the development of the standardbred broodmare band in <strong>Ontario</strong>.The TrilliumSeries consists of three pacing and three trotting races for both two and three-year-oldfillies. To be eligible to the Trillium Series, the filly must be 100% <strong>Ontario</strong>-owned.Within the pages of this Directory you will find important information about the OSS, includinga comprehensive list of sires eligible for the 2005 program.
