that of the 96,420 bacterial culture requests handled by<br />

the Microbiology laboratory last year, 34.4% had<br />

bacterial isolates with Staphylococcus aureus<br />

accounting for 39% of it. He raised alarm that 31% of<br />

these Staph aureus isolates were of the superbug<br />

Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA) strain.<br />

He outlined global challenges faced in controlling the<br />

superbug menace and particularly thanked the CMD<br />

for his efforts in ensuring that the laboratory acquired a<br />

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine which will<br />

assist laboratory physicians to make accurate diagnosis<br />

of such organisms. He recommended specific measures<br />

that could be taken to prevent the emergence of such<br />

infections in <strong>UITH</strong> such as rational antibiotic<br />

prescription, controlled use of broad-spectrum<br />

antibiotics, proper administration of full doses of<br />

antibiotics to patients' e.t.c.<br />

�Encourage the affected area of the skin to bleed<br />

for a few seconds.<br />

�Wash the area with soap under running water. If<br />

mucous membrane is involved irrigate with<br />

copious amounts of water only<br />

�Rinse and dry.<br />

Do Not Suck or Scrub The Area<br />

� Report to the appropriate authority<br />

� Inform patient and request permission to screen<br />

him/her for HIV if patient's status is not known<br />

� Screen yourself IMMEDIATELY for HIV and<br />

have your Exposure Code assessed by a competent<br />

personnel to determine risk.<br />

� Post-exposure prophylaxis therapy should be<br />

initiated as soon as possible preferably within 72<br />

hours.<br />

� Comply religiously with the drugs which should<br />

be at least for an initial 4 weeks.<br />

bus they previously had.<br />

Chairman MAC, Dr BS Alabi thanked the team for their<br />

sincere and honest comments on the hospital. He further<br />

appreciated their efforts in ensuring a thorough<br />

accreditation of the school. He promised the team that<br />

the Management will not relent in its effort to make the<br />

school a Model.<br />

UNILORIN HOLDS 109TH INAUGURAL LECTURE<br />

Pr o f e s s o r O l a n r e w a j u Ti m o t h y Sciences, University of Ilorin, delivered the 109th inaugural<br />

Adedoyin of the Peadiatrics and Child lecture of the University. Prof. Adedoyin in the lecture titled<br />

Health Department, College of Health “Chronic Kidney Diseases In Children; The Myths, the Politics<br />

and the Facts” defined Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) as kidney<br />

damage manifested by structural or functional abnormalities<br />

lasting three or four months with or without decreased glomerular<br />

filtration rates.<br />

Prof. Adedoyin in his extensive lecture highlighted the<br />

epidemiology of CKD in children, the causes and predisposing<br />

factor to CKD in children, Pathophysiology, Kidney transplant<br />

and the challenges in the care of children with CKD.<br />

He emphasized that the management of the disease could be<br />

sometimes expensive. He stated that CKD robs the children<br />

affected of school hours either due to frequent admissions or<br />

follow up attendance at the clinic. He stressed that parents of<br />

sufferers sometimes have to divert scarce resources that should<br />

have been used for food, shelter, and education of the other<br />

children to one child, such that in the home of children with CKD,<br />

the illness of one child affects all.<br />

While concluding his lecture Prof Adedoyin in his<br />

recommendation urge that renal replacement for children with<br />

CKD should be free or heavily subsidized by the government or<br />

alternatively, NHIS should include chronic illness like CKD in its<br />

care plan.<br />

and Kwara State at large.<br />

Responding on behalf of the delegates, the National President of<br />

the Association, Dr A. Adenipekun reiterated the aims of the<br />

Association which include the promotion of Hospice and<br />

Palliative Care in Nigeria through education, research and<br />

training of professionals and volunteers in the field of palliative<br />

care. Dr. Adenipekun commended the local organizing<br />

committee headed by Dr IK Kolawole for working tiredlessly<br />
