CRUISE INTOHIDDENMYANMARA new river cruiser, Orcaella, joins thelong-established Road To Mandalay onMyanmar’s great waterways. This secondcraft offers longer itineraries to remoterregions, mixing adventurous excursionswith leisurely days on board.23

MYANMARImagine sipping the first coffee of the day only tolook up and glimpse a score of golden pagodas on ahillside, glinting in the morning sun. This is just one of many magical experiencesaboard the river cruiser Road To Mandalay as itrounds a bend in the silvery Ayeyarwady and thespires of Sagaing Hill come into view. Nestled amongthe trees and shrines are more than 600 monasteriesfor the thousands of monks, nuns and Burmesefaithful who flock here for retreat.Travelling on the Road To Mandalay has long beena sublime way to discover Myanmar. The stretch ofriver between Bagan and Mandalay takes in a stringof ancient capitals with many key sights. But over the 17 years that the ship has plied thisroute there has been one recurrent lament. Thereis so much to see and do that, despite its leisurelyprogress, time seems to rush past. For manypassengers, the journey is simply not long enough. Now there’s an exciting new solution for travellerswishing to explore Myanmar in greater depth. From July 2013, Road To Mandalay is joined by aNESTLED AMONG THE TREES AND SHRINESARE MORE THAN 600 MONASTERIES FORTHE THOUSANDS OF BURMESE FAITHFULWHO FLOCK HERE FOR RETREAT.24

new, younger sister, Orcaella (named after the riverdolphins that passengers may spot from its topdeck). This smaller, more nimble craft introduceslonger cruises to more distant parts of Myanmar, yet continues to embrace all the highlights alreadyoffered by the original ship. While Road To Mandalay links the ancient pagodacity of Bagan with Mandalay, and makes an annualforay north to Bhamo on the Chinese border,Orcaella’s routes also lead from Yangon to Bagan andalong the enchanting Chindwin valley.Cruising through dramatic, jungle-clad gorges, the smaller ship is poised to penetrate some ofMyanmar’s remotest regions—clearly visible throughits large windows—and make regular stops at smallvillages that dot the shore.Highlights of its Yangon-Bagan route include thevast gardens of the Returning Home Pagoda (namedfor the Buddha stolen by the British Army that QueenVictoria insisted be sent back), the former capital cityof Pyay and the Wooden Monastery of Salay. For those with more time, the journey along theThis page, the temples of Sagaing, overlookingthe Ayeyarwady River, close by the main berthof Orcaella and Road To Mandalay.Previous page, the shimmering ShwedagonPagoda in Yangon, Myanmar’s historic port city.25

MYANMARChindwin promises to be a revelation. Few foreignvisitors have explored this waterway, home to cavetemples and remote tribal villages. Visits to localmarkets and ancient pagodas, a jungle trek andopportunity to play at a colonial-era golf courseprecede the ship’s arrival at Homalin, a busy tradegateway close by the Indian border.Another route leads through towering gorgesto Bhamo, just a few miles short of China. Its manyexciting ports of call include Katha, once home towriter George Orwell, with a trip by trishaw to thevibrant market described in his book Burmese Days. Both ships offer the chance to explore Mandalay, with its royal palace and revered Mahamuni Buddha. At Mingun, a few kilometres further north, travellersare met by pony cart and taken at a trot to the world’slargest uncracked bell, weighing in at 90 tonnes. One morning, guests might be invited to joinin the offering of alms to a snaking procession ofmonks. Stopovers in small villages include visits tocraft workshops such as silversmiths and makers oflacquer ware. At teashops there’s the opportunity totry the local brew, laced with condensed milk. But of all the ports of call it is Bagan that mostAn unusually green view of Bagan, by the AyeyarwadyRiver, whose ancient pagodas rise up from a vast plain.28

impresses. Over 2,500 pagodas cover a vast swatheof sand and scrub beside the river. Climb one of theseexquisite, 1,000-year-old monuments at sunset towatch as the light ebbs away. But best of all, rise beforedawn to float over the temple-studded plain in aballoon as the scene is bathed in a rosy pink glow.Voyages settle into a rhythmic to and fro of dining, lounging in the bar with a Planter’s Punch andrelaxing by the pool. Guests feast on dishes such asInle Lake lamb red curry and snapper served withMyanmar-style eggplant sauce. There are lecturesabout the country’s fascinating, tumultuous history, and the chance to talk with the ship’s physician,Dr Hla Tun who, in the aftermath of hurricaneNargis, helped mobilise emergency clinics thattreated more than 250,000 patients. But what is it that makes each cruise an adventureto remember? Invariably it’s the unrivalled glimpseinto a riverine, rural way of life. Scenes seem toevoke a distant era: yoked Brahmin oxen pull cartsdown to the water’s edge, extended families irrigatetheir plots of farmland and huge log rafts drift past. And everywhere the boat sails, enthusiastic cries of“Minglabar!” (Hello!) ring out from the riverbanks.OVER 2,500 PAGODAS LINE THE RIVERBANKS. DESIGNSETTINGTHE MOODWhat inspires the teams who createnew looks for our collection? Wediscover the thinking behind new spacesand features at Rio’s Copacabana Palace,Hotel Splendido in Portofino, Cuzco’sPalacio Nazarenas and aboard Britain’sNorthern Belle train.Regular guests entering the lobby of Rio’sCopacabana Palace are likely to stop in their tracksand exclaim “wow!”—for this previously modestspace has undergone a complete transformation. Now 100% larger, the bright, spacious reception areaof Rio’s legendary hotel boasts a widened Carraramarble staircase with the original ceiling revealed, relaxed seating areas and a showstoppingchandelier. A new portico outside the mainentrance protects guests from the elements.Renowned interior designer MichelJouannet, who masterminded the 14-monthproject, worked with our local team to givethe hotel a more contemporary look. Heproduced a mood board, with sketches ofhis vision enhanced by details of the fabricsand furniture he wanted to use, and thatboard came to life as the vibrant space yousee today.“We kept the marble floors, butintroduced a modern twist and a warmerfeel with more wood, more colours, morelighting,” he says. Beautifully displayed32

He presented amood board combining a fresh, contemporary lookwith a relaxed Mediterranean appeal.Expanses of white are interspersed with splashesof turquoise, indigo and aquamarine, echoing thehues guests can see through the windows. There areantiques as well as specially commissioned artworkson the walls.Jouannet embraced both projects with equalgusto. “I do completely different work for everybody,”he says. “Make sure that it’s something personal.”Janna Rapaport, the designer who createdthe look for our newest Peruvian hotel, PalacioNazarenas in Cuzco, says: “I made the project quitecomplicated for myself but I wouldn’t have had itany other way—it was wonderful.” In discussion withthe local team she came up with a wholly originalconcept for the hotel, which was converted froma former palace and convent. “I focused on thetransitional period when the Spanish came to Peru.Artistically it was a Renaissance moment when two35

DESIGNcultures came into contact. When the Spanish came, they brought furniture and rugs, which they askedthe Incas to copy. The Incas put their own spin onthe designs with beautiful results. It was this feel that Iwanted to capture for the hotel.“Most of the hotel looks like the original moodboards. To produce them I would create the energyfor that room (be it the restaurant, reception or abathroom) and add details such as wood finishesand textures. The Inca culture is all about the sunand moon, which helped me to define the colours. Ifocused on blues and lighter tones.“I worked with wonderful local artists and artisans.Renowned craftsman and furniture expert JaimeLiebana designed the vanities in this bathroom(pictured right), for instance, which are finished intraditional milk paint with gilding. Leading frescoartist and restorer Julio Ninantay did the wallpainting, which is based on historic paintings innearby 16th- and 17th-century churches. The lightingand silver mirrors were also crafted in Peru.”To picture how Chris Shields painted the ceilingmurals of the Duart carriage of the Northern Belle, imagine Michelangelo crafting the frescoes in theSistine Chapel: on scaffolding of his own devising, head back, arms extended—and no doubt aching. The acclaimed British wildlife artist custom-Janna Rapaport (centre) called onlocal Peruvian experts to recreatetraditional Cuzco furniture forPalacio Nazarenas, including thereception area (concept, top left;reality, top right), the bathrooms(right) and suites (above, far right).36

On this he placed a modified gaming seat, which he reclined at a 30-40 degree angle.Shields took the name of the carriage—Duart,a Scottish castle—as inspiration for the murals, perfecting his preliminary drawings before startingto paint: “I devised a series of vignettes of Scottishnatural history—primrose, lovage, a Scottishtoadstool, a thistle, a golden eagle and a red deer stag. And because Duart Castle is owned by the Macleanfamily, I added their coat of arms.”Shields, whose signature flourish is to slip abutterfly or moth into each piece of work, alsoincorporated a Scotch argus butterfly, which, at fiveinches wide, passengers should find easy to spot.Once on his platform, he burnished the drawingson to the wood panels of the carriage ceiling andthen painted in acrylics. But how to keep his armsfrom drooping? Fortunately, as a teacher of theArgentinean tango in his spare time, his upper limbswere more than up to the task!38

SPIRIT OFST PETERSBURGIn prime position at St Petersburg’scultural heart, Grand Hotel Europeis a hotline to everything thatmakes the city fizz.43

44ST PETERSBURG

The grand boulevard of Nevsky Prospektsweeps through the centre of St Petersburg, carryingall the city’s romance and heritage with it. One of theworld’s great thoroughfares, lined by palaces andswanky stores, it passes over canals with glimpses ofgolden griffons and domed cathedrals on either side. The writer Nikolai Gogol described it asSt Petersburg’s “be-all and end-all”, declaring “itpositively gleams and sparkles”. If that was true inthe 19th century, it is even more so today now thatfanciful historic buildings have been restored andjoined by contemporary glass façades. On its journey towards the Hermitagethe Prospekt intercepts Arts Square, where café society joins high culture.Lining one side of a Parisian-style park isthe Russian Museum, a fabulous formerpalace that houses paintings rangingfrom venerated icons to constructivistworks. To either side sit the MikhailovskyTheatre, a pastel jewel-box dating from1833, and the Philharmonia concert hall. And at the hub of all the action, overlooking both Nevsky Prospekt andArts Square, sits Grand Hotel Europe, where le tout Russia has always gatheredto see and be seen. Since its opening in1875 everyone from Tchaikovsky to “madmonk” Rasputin has visited. Its Lobby Barremains the ultimate place to touch thecity’s soul in one swift slug of vodka, andto really get under its skin in two or more.Stay here and the city comes to you(as many guests appreciate when snowswirls around outside). Check into anHistoric Suite, named after a previousfamous guest, and you’ll be surroundedby artefacts associated with their lives. For a real frisson, combine a night inthe Stravinsky Suite with a performance of The Riteof Spring under the baton of a maestro like ValeryGergiev. BUSINESS EVENTSThe movies that linger longest in our mindsare often the ones that feature staggeringlysumptuous or dramatic scenery: long after we haveceased to shudder at the murderous actions of TheTalented Mr Ripley, for example, we’re still utterlyin love with the sun-dappled, lemon-groved twistsand turns of Italy’s Amalfi Coast. And while we maynot consider Lara Croft: Tomb Raider a seriouscontender for our all-time movie classics, we can’thelp but be smitten by the magnificent—authentic—Cambodian ruins around which the film is set. These are just two of the many films that havebeen shot in or near our properties. Mr Ripley, starring Matt Damon, the languid Gwyneth Paltrowand Jude Law, conjured up la dolce vita in the1950s and highlighted the beauty of the SorrentoPeninsula, over which Hotel Caruso has unrivalledviews. The 1999 film also features Naples, Rome andVenice, including a scene at Santa Lucia RailwayStation, where travellers on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express alight from their journey.Much of the 2001 movie Tomb Raider was setin the ancient Angkor Wat temple complex inCambodia, a site easily explored from La Résidenced’Angkor in Siem Reap. Based on the popularvideo game, the film sees Angelina Jolie as anarchaeologist-adventurer travelling the world insearch of rare and mystical artefacts. Guests of thehotel can enjoy private breakfasts served next to thestone gate where much of the action took place.Sicily has provided sumptuous backdrops to arange of films, such as the 1988 Oscar-winningCinema Paradiso, which conjures up directorGiuseppe Tornatore’s childhood when he first fellin love with the movies shown in his village theatre. The film was shot in Palazzo Adriano and both thetown and surrounding sunbaked landscapes can beexplored from Hotel Grand Timeo, in Taormina.Highlighting a shadier side of 1940s Sicilian lifeis a film that hardly needs introduction: FrancisFord Coppola’s 1972 The Godfather, starring MarlonBrando and Al Pacino. BUSINESS EVENTScan take a tour following in the footsteps of theCorleone family, visiting recognisable places in thenearby village of Savoca, such as the 18th-centuryBar Vitelli and the Church of Santa Lucia, whereMichael Corleone and Apollonia marry.Woody Allen fans might also be interested toknow that the splendid Greek Theatre standing rightby Grand Hotel Timeo was a setting used in his 1995romantic comedy, Mighty Aphrodite. The locations definitely steal the scenes in LucBesson’s 1988 cult film about rival champion divers,The Big Blue; in particular the azure waters just offTaormina Mare where some of the most stunningmoments of the film were created. These vistas willbe familiar to guests at Villa Sant’Andrea, whosewindows look out over the bay of Mazzarò.The vistas are equally alluring in A Room witha View, the 1986 Merchant-Ivory adaptation ofEM Forster’s novel, in which Helena Bonham Carter,Judi Dench et al explore Florence. The city andthe hillside of Fiesole, scene of the daring first kissbetween Lucy and George, are a stone’s throw fromVilla San Michele. Another period drama, 1991’sEnchanted April, about four 1920s English ladieswho rent an Italian castle, is set in medieval CastelloBrown, overlooking Portofino harbour. The castlecan be seen from Hotel Splendido and guests whoclimb to it are rewarded with mesmerising views. There can be no more arresting start to a filmthan Roland Joffé’s The Mission, in which a Jesuitpriest is tied to a makeshift cross and launched overIguassu Falls to his death. Starring Robert De Niroand Jeremy Irons, the 1986 epic perfectly capturesthe awe-inspiring, natural beauty of the steamyBrazilian jungle and thundering falls. Guests at Hoteldas Cataratas, the only hotel located within IguassuNational Park, enjoy ringside views of the area.Arresting for entirely different reasons was the1987 film Wall Street. Santa Barbara has many astonishing views, but none as quintessentially west coast as that fromEl Encanto, the celebrated resort on a hilltop abovethe town. The vista sweeps down over trees androoftops to the Pacific Ocean, with a string of islandsglistening on the horizon beyond.Ever since this glamorous hideaway wasestablished nearly 100 years ago, it has revelled ina setting worthy of a movie romance. Small wonderthat it instantly became a darling of Hollywood’s elite.Come Friday and stars would hop into their opentoppedCadillacs and cruise up from Los Angeles, just90 minutes away. The calm and natural beauty thatthey discovered were the perfect antidote to theirdirector’s demands. There couldn’t have been a moresecluded spot to spend a weekend tucked away. Now, following painstaking restoration, the retreatwhose name means “enchanted place” has beeninfused with a new lease of life. And yet all of itslaid-back vibe has been maintained. There are thelush, terraced gardens threaded by streams andmeandering pathways, fresh with the scent of treesladen with citrus fruits. BIARRITZBE SURPRISEDBY BIARRITZYou’ve heard the name, but if you’ve yet to go there, you’llbe amazed by Biarritz. Set in the Basque region adjacent toSpain, it’s like nowhere else in France. The sun streams down from a clear bluesky, as the thermometer soars towards 26 degrees.Ladies in bikinis stretch out on the beach, stirringonly to greet the men who emerge from the sea withsurfboards under their arms. A classic scene in southwest France you might think—until you considerthat this is mid-November. How come it seemslike August when Christmas lights are being set uparound town? The heat that sends us scurrying inside for shadeturns out to be one of endless surprises that unfold inBiarritz, the fabled 19th-century resort that lured theemperor Napoleon and his wife Eugénie to choose thispicturesque stretch of coast for their holiday home.Clockwise from this page: Biarritz is one of the world’s great surfing destinations, with brands like Quiksilver hostingtournaments on its waves; bright Basque linens; the pool at Hôtel du Palais’ Spa Impérial; macarons are a Biarritz treat;an oceanside table; red peppers decorate the village of Espelette; the rugged Basque coast; Hôtel du Palais flies the flag.72

BIARRITZIndeed the town itself is something of a secret, asif hidden in the shadow of the Pyrenees mountainsthat rear up a few kilometres further south. Set in theBasque region, it’s in an area of France that manydedicated Francophiles have yet to reach. Paris?Yes. Provence? Of course. But Biarritz? Not yet. Andtherein lies much of its charm. There’s a wonderful whiff of glamour about thisfabled resort. Quirky mansions built by visitingaristocrats in the style of their homelands line thecliffs. They’re part of a long tradition of famous facesstaying here. Actress Isabelle Huppert, sitting by thebeachfront casino, barely draws a second glance.Nowhere captures the spirit of sophisticatedvacances more than Hôtel du Palais, the majesticbelle époque landmark on a headland at theresort’s heart. Built as Empress Eugénie’s privateresidence before becoming a hotel in 1893, it glowswith polished marble, gilded empire furniture andantique lamps. The ballroom, painted with classicalmurals, seems custom-made to host cotillion dancersbeneath its crystal chandeliers. Its Spa Impérial, spread over five spacious floors, isreplete with Roman-inspired pool, Turkish baths anda specialist centre for hair care. Beauty treatmentsusing products by Guerlain focus on a fragrancecreated by this great Parisian perfume house forEugénie herself, performed by experts from aroundthe world. And yet the hotel is also very much a part ofits earthy Basque heritage. There may be formalMichelin-starred dining in its restaurants, but ChefJean-Marie Gautier is a champion of regionalproduce and is never happier than when cycling tohis friends’ farms to source hand-reared ingredientsbursting with taste. Gautier mentions that his chickenCHEF JEAN-MARIEGAUTIER IS ACHAMPION OFREGIONAL PRODUCE.HE IS NEVER HAPPIERTHAN WHEN CYCLINGTO HIS FRIENDS’FARMS TO SOURCEHAND-REAREDINGREDIENTS.Chef Jean-Marie Gautier’s kitchen is the springboard fora wealth of innovative tastes which can be savoured in theMichelin-starred Villa Eugénie and La Rotonde restaurants.74
