To produce them I would create the energyfor that room (be it the restaurant, reception or abathroom) and add details such as wood finishesand textures. Ifocused on blues and lighter tones.“I worked with wonderful local artists and artisans.Renowned craftsman and furniture expert JaimeLiebana designed the vanities in this bathroom(pictured right), for instance, which are finished intraditional milk paint with gilding. Leading frescoartist and restorer Julio Ninantay did the wallpainting, which is based on historic paintings innearby 16th- and 17th-century churches. The lightingand silver mirrors were also crafted in Peru.”To picture how Chris Shields painted the ceilingmurals of the Duart carriage of the Northern Belle, imagine Michelangelo crafting the frescoes in theSistine Chapel: on scaffolding of his own devising, head back, arms extended—and no doubt aching. The acclaimed British wildlife artist custom-Janna Rapaport (centre) called onlocal Peruvian experts to recreatetraditional Cuzco furniture forPalacio Nazarenas, including thereception area (concept, top left;reality, top right), the bathrooms(right) and suites (above, far right).36
