Providing students with adequate <strong>and</strong> accurate information assists in theselection of an institution that best matches their needs, which in turn increases theirchances of persisting.Admissions Selectivity. Even though academic ability is a strong predictor of studentretention, <strong>and</strong> there is clearly a relationship between the degree of admissionsselectivity <strong>and</strong> institutional retention rates, high institutional commitment to studentsuccess can lead to higher than predicted retention rates <strong>and</strong> performance.Financial Aid. The type <strong>and</strong> mix of financial aid provided to students can have eitherpositive or negative influences on students’ decisions to remain in college dependingupon their circumstances <strong>and</strong> background factors as well as cost of tuition, room <strong>and</strong>board, <strong>and</strong> fees.Commuter <strong>Student</strong>s. Regardless of differences in backgrounds <strong>and</strong> educational goals,commuter students share a common core of needs <strong>and</strong> concerns. There are issuesrelated to transportation that limit the time they spend on campus, multiple life roles,the importance of integrating their support systems into the collegiate world, <strong>and</strong>developing a sense of belonging to the campus.Orientation.
