There was little talk of hard times anddifficult trading conditions as we mingled with operators, dealers andmanufacturers at the recent CV Show in Birmingham; in fact, nearlyeveryone we spoke to had a positive spin to put on the future. That was underscored in our ‘face to face’ interview with Iveco’sManaging Director for the UK and Ireland Luca Sra who tells us, ‘therecession is past and confidence is growing in the market.’ You can readthe interview in full in this edition in which we also carry a comprehensive round-up ofthe CV Show. We’ve also been speaking with DAF Managing Director Ray Ashworth who, too, is upbeat. He tells us the dealer network is buoyant and looking forward with a level of optimism tothe rest of 2012 and into 2013.With the longer days, truck festivals are making an appearance in several parts of thecountry and fully deserve your support. The Mid Ulster Truckers group holds its annualTruck Festival at the end of May - last year’s event raised £67,000 for charity – while theIrvinestown Truck Festival, another great charity fund raiser, is scheduled for July. Thenin August, we welcome Truckfest to Ireland for the first time; it’s being staged over twodays at the King’s Hall in Belfast. In this issue, too, we hear from Norman McBurney and his team who were recentlynamed ASDA’s Outstanding Service Provider of the Year, and from Tom Wilson whohas been appointed as FTA Ireland’s General Manager. Congratulations are also due toTransport Training Services who are celebrating their 20th year in business, and to VFraser & Sons Ltd, based in Cookstown, who, as you’ll read inside, have recently takendelivery of what is Northern Ireland’s first flagship Volvo FH16-750 tractor unit fromDennison Commercials,There’s been plenty happening on the shipping front lately. Stena Line has confirmed thepurchase the two vessels it acquired when the company took over Liverpool-Belfast routefor £45m last summer, while Seatruck has just launched a new direct service betweenBelfast and Heysham. There’ve also been some notable new appointments at Stena Lineand Irish Ferries. In the world of vans, one of the major talking points has been the new Mercedes-Benzurban van, the Citan, which makes its public debut in Hannover in September; there’sbeen plenty of interest, too, in the all-new one-tonne Ford Transit Custom, which made itsglobal debut at the Birmingham Show. 8newsLaois County Council Plugs InLaois County Council have just taken delivery of a new Alke Electric Utility Vehicle. Fitted with adropside body, the vehicle will mainly be used for rubbish collection from street bins in Portlaoise. Also supplied with thevehicle was a Salt Spreaderand Snow Plough. These areeasily fitted or removed and willbe ready to improve footpathconditions for pedestrianswithin Portlaoise town.John O’Donoghue, SeniorEngineer Roads Section, LaoisCounty Council is delightedwith the Council’s decisionto purchase what is the firstelectric vehicle in the Council’sextensive vehicle fleet. Hesays it is testament to theircommitment to the environmentand other advantages to begained from using electricvehicles in urban areas. The Alke ATX is available in 3different weight categories andis designed to be used in thehardest and most demandingconditions with a load capacityof up to 1000 Kgs and a towingcapacity up to 3000 Kgs,depending on the model chosen. The cost of recharging thevehicle’s batteries to perform afull day’s work is as little as €1.They are ideally suited forurban conditions, such as localauthorities, airports, hospitals, universities, cemeteries, railwaystations, public & private parks& estates, garden nurseries, golf courses, stud farms, hotels, shopping centres andmany more applications. They can also be used indoors andcan be supplied without a cab ifso desired. With zero emissionsand zero noise, the electric vehicleis finally being seriously consideredby many companies to assist withtheir environmental responsibilitiesand enjoy economic benefitsat the same time.VOSA fee changesRevised fees for annual lorry and bus testing and operator licensing came into effect at the beginning of April. For the third year running,VOSA is not applying any generalincrease to most statutory fees– most changes aim to movecosts between customers withno extra revenue for VOSA.Fees for HGV and PSV testingare being adjusted to applya differential between testsconducted at non-VOSA testfacilities and VOSA test facilities– with the “testing element” ofmost fees at non-VOSA facilitiesreducing by 4% before roundingand those at VOSA sites increasingby 4% before rounding to chargemore of the cost of providingVOSA facilities to users of thosefacilities. The “enforcementelement” incorporated inannual test fees (but not retestfees) has not changed.Fees for applications for HGVand PSV operator licences – andfor varying and continuing suchlicences – will rise by 1.6%.VOSA estimates that the overalleffect of the changes to allstatutory fees will, at worst, increase overall operating costsfor operators using VOSAtest facilities by less thanone hundredth of a per cent(0.01%) – but many customersusing ATFs will pay less.VOSA Chief Executive AlastairPeoples said: “We understandthe financial pressures operatorsare under. That is why I amdelighted that we have been ableto avoid any general increase infees for the third year running.“I’m also pleased to announce afee differential for annual testsat non-VOSA sites which movesfurther towards charging thefull cost of VOSA facilities tothose who use those facilities. This will make non-VOSA sitessuch as ATF’s an even moreattractive option for operatorsgetting vehicles tested.”DAF focuses on ATe programmeFor DAF Trucks, the Bedrijfsauto RAI 2012 exhibition, which was recently held in Amsterdam, was all about Advanced Transport Efficiency (ATe), a complete range of solutions tofurther reduce fuel consumption and emissions and improve truck efficiency.Alongside the CF85 andXF105 ATe Edition models, DAFshowcased developments thatform part of its ATe philosophy, including an aerodynamic bodyfor the LF distribution truck and anew lightweight tandem axle.DAF launched its ATe programmein the summer of 2011 with theintroduction of a large numberof enhancements to the 12.9-litre PACCAR MX engine. Theseenhancements, including newpistons, optimised fuel injectionand a unique, fully encapsulatedexhaust manifold unit, ensures3% lower fuel consumptionand lower CO2 emissions. The range of transmissions hasalso been expanded with theaddition of new manual andautomatic 12-speed gearboxes, which allows the driveline to beeven more effectively tailored tothe specific use of the vehicle. In addition, the engine in the CFand XF105 models switches offautomatically after five minutesof idling, and the maximumspeed is limited to 85 insteadof 89 km/h, which saves anadditional 2 to 3% fuel in theinternational transport sector. In order to raise the driver’sawareness of the importanceof driving efficiently, extensiveinformation on the current andachieved fuel consumption isprovided on the central displayon the dashboard as a standard. But ATe is about much morethan just fuel consumption, as isproven by the new maintenancefreebatteries that are installedas standard in the CF and XFfor a longer service life, loweroperational costs and a lowerimpact on the environment. The CF85 and XF105 ATeEdition models that form partof DAF’s ATe programme arespecial versions that have beenfully optimised for low fuelconsumption. They are equippedwith a complete set of side skirts, roof spoilers and side fenders, tyres with a low rolling resistanceand adaptive cruise control. AnAS Tronic automated gearboxwith a shifting strategy fullyoptimised for fuel consumptionis fitted as standard, which onlyallows the driver to change gearhimself when manoeuvring orusing the PACCAR engine brake. All CF85 and XF105 ATe Editionmodels also come with DAFEcoDrive driver training, which,in practice, permanently reducesactual fuel consumption and CO2emissions by 3 to 5% on average.News 6pgs.indd 8 09/05/2012 10:45

This meansoperators have the peace of mindin knowing that they won’t beleft out-of-pocket in the unlikelyevent a part needs to be replacedduring its warranty period.”Commenting on the importanceof procuring original equipmentspecification parts for temperaturecontrolled systems, he explained,“If a component on a tractor unitfails, you can put another truckon the job and you’re on yourway. The minute refrigerationunit stops because of a failedpart, it can have an impact oncold chain integrity. This is one ofthe reasons why fitting genuineCarrier Transicold spare parts givesoperators added confidence.”The new, extended warrantyalso applies to CarrierTransicold’s extensive line-up ofremanufactured components, enabling fleets to cost-effectivelymaintain their units. Allremanufactured componentsare completely rebuilt by CarrierTransicold to the latest tolerancesit sets for its refrigeration units. This ensures long-term quality, efficiency and reliability levels.“In terms of form and function, nothing else comes close toCarrier Transicold PerformanceParts. With this class-leadingwarranty. We are ensuring thatcustomers can get the completepackage through the largestnetwork of service partners inthe UK,” added Scott Dargan.Dynamic - Bandvulc’s Fuel Saving Energy TyresIt is a well-established fact that low rolling resistance tyres play a major role in reducing fuel consumption. To this end Bandvulchas spent significant time and research developing rubber compounds and tread patterns to achieve the Dynamic tyre range. These premium tyres aredesigned in-house and arethe subject of extensive trialson fleets and at independentproving grounds. In house testson Bandvulc’s own vehicles showthat the Dynamics low rollingresistance compound gives anaverage improvement of up to9.7% in fuel consumption.Bandvulc is the only independenttruck tyre retreader in the UK withits own rubber compound facilitywhere it develops and mixesDynamic is Bandvulc’s fuel savingenergy tyre range designed in-houseusing bespoke tread compounddeveloped at Devon Rubber, adivision of Bandvulcbespoke compounds for its rangeof retreaded tyres. The Group’scommitment to its environmentalpolicy prompted developmentof the ‘Dynamic’ tyre. The continuing escalation offuel prices is focusing hauliers’attention on fuel saving initiatives. The haulage industry has howeverbeen wary of the new technologyincorporated into low rollingresistance tyres due to reportedreduced tread life and suspicionsof wet grip performance.“At Bandvulc we have takenconsiderable time in the designof both the tread patternsand the compounds to delivera tyre to the market that willdeliver a safe ride for the driverwhilst giving reliability andeconomy to the operator.”The Dynamic range isavailable as the BDE1+295/80R22.5 (drive axle, longhaul, regional application),and the B2K+ 385/65R22.5(long haul trailer tyre).Bandvulc Launches Unique Tyre Labelling SystemBandvulc has developed a new tyre labelling system which it will be demonstrating at this year’s CV show. The labels are generatedduring the tyre retreading process at Bandvulc’s facility in Devon using Merlin, bespoke production software developed in-house.The new label is larger andclearer to assist all of Bandvulc’scustomers, including the tyrefitter. It contains all the elementsyou’d expect, i.e. tyre make, size and serial number but theinnovative part of the label isthe QR code, a barcode whichcan be scanned using a PDA,mobile phone or some otherform of reader, to electronicallyprovide data on that tyre. This will be immensely beneficialfor tyre fitters of the future as theywill be able to record and uploadtyre job details electronically insteadof completing paper jobsheets. Forcompanies/depots adopting thisfacility, the future brings automaticstock holding adjustments, recording of fitters’ work andnotification to Bandvulc of thework via an electronic job sheet.News 6pgs.indd 10 09/05/2012 10:45

12newsDAF Trucks optimistic about the futureDAF Trucks may have been absent at this year’s CV Show in Birmingham, buttheir Managing Director Ray Ashworth has confirmed they will be back at the 2013exhibition, and he’s been speaking about his optimism for the future.DAF Trucks ManagingDirector Ray Ashworth“DAF were very much atthe CV Show last year and I canassure you we will be back nextyear as well as some significantactivity later this year at Hanover.”Part of the reason for theirabsence this year was the fact thatDAF exhibited two weeks earlierat the RAI show in Amsterdamafter a break of five years.“It was clearly important for us tobe there after five years and DAFused the opportunity to launchthe Euro 6 engine. This is a cleardemonstration that DAF have thetechnology ready for Euro 6 andindeed learnt a lot from its sisterproduct - the EPA10 MX enginethat is now sold in somethinglike 25% of all Kenworth andPeterbilt trucks in the USA.“Whilst that engine uses thetechnology platform and SCRand EGR, together with aclosed type particulate filter, our new Euro 6 engine is verymuch more sophisticated.“The integration of the aftertreatment system usingover 40 sensors, 14 controlunits and common rail fuelinjection running at 2,500 barpressures and variable geometryturbocharger technologies makethis new MX13 Euro 6 enginea much more complex productdevelopment challenge.”The first appearance of thisengine in a vehicle will belater this year, and added RayAshworth: “All this Euro 6development doesn’t mean we’vestopped Euro 5 development. We will carry on building Euro 5alongside Euro 6 in the comingyears because DAF is a verydifferent company to that of onlyfive years ago. Many parts of theworld remain happy with Euro 3or Euro 5 technology includingour new markets of Brazil, Indiaand China where PACCAR hasinvested heavily over recent years.“Our focus for 2012 will beon promoting the existingmodel range with a focus onfuel economy. That meansadvanced transport efficiency(ATe) - upgraded enginesand aerodynamic bodies.“Our new ATe Euro 5 enginerange with new pistons, software, oil control and other fuel savingdevices are showing typicalimprovements of 3-5% comparedwith equivalent models of 12months’ ago. Of course thatgives us a challenge for Euro6 as well because our targetis to match this new improvedfuel efficiency at Euro 6. Ouraerodynamic body on the LF hasa proven 8.3% fuel saving.”He says that in the UK market, customers continue to want Euro5 - not Euro 6. “Lots of operatorswant to know about Euro 6 andits implications, but they generallydecide that Euro 5 remains theirway forward and that the limitedreduced pollution incentivesare not substantial enough.”He added that the market so farthis year has held up remarkablywell - over 25% up on last yearso far, but there are, he said, signsof some hesitancy, although heexpects the market to build againtowards the end of this year inthe run up to 2013 and Euro 6.“As for DAF, I’m delighted tosay that our market share isrunning at virtually 30% whichis an all-time high. The LF inparticular is doing very well beingresponsible for nearly 40% ofall sales in its sector. PACCARFinancial are now funding over40% share of our registrationsdespite all the headline newsthat the banks are back; over3,000 orders year-to-date.“Similarly our factory bodyprogramme is now wellestablished with over 2,000now in operation and an annualrunning level of over 1,000bodied vehicles coming out of thefactory at Leyland which probablyputs us in the top 5 UK bodybuilders. Our dealer networkremains buoyant - they’ve beenthrough a tough couple of years, but continue to invest and thestatistics look quite good.“I’m not saying that everythingis rosy, but I am saying that themarket will continue to be toughbut positive and particularly therental market is very strong. We look forward - with alevel of optimism - to the restof 2012 and into 2013.”Iveco prepares ultimate fuel saving heavy truck combinationIveco is preparing what it believes could be the ultimate fuel-saving heavytruck combination for press evaluation, after pairing its ECOSTRALIS 6x2 midlifttractor unit with Montracton’s new FST (fuel saving trailer). The tri-axle box van semitraileris claimed by Montraconto return fuel savings of upto 8 per cent compared withtraditional box vans. It is now apermanent addition to Iveco’sDunstable-based press fleetand will be available for mediaappraisal and road test in theUK and Ireland throughout2012, in conjunction with theECOSTRALIS AS440S46TX/P.Nigel Emms, Press and PublicRelations Director of Iveco, says: “With diesel prices atrecord levels and an additional3.02p in fuel duty beingadded by the Chancellor on 1August 2012, fleets need to beincreasingly innovative if theyare to keep fuel bills in check.“We’re confident that pairing ourultra-fuel-efficient ECOSTRALISwith this sleek new aerodynamictrailer will demonstrate afurther way for fleets to saveat the pumps,” he adds. The ECOSTRALIS features are-mapped version of the EEVratedFPT Cursor 10 engine, designed to reduce fuelconsumption whilst maintainingperformance. The 10.3 litreengine is capable of producingup to 460 hp and a maximumtorque of 2,100 Nm between1,050 and 1,550 rev/min.Additional fuel-saving featuresinclude an ECOSWITCH devicethat uses the vehicle weightinformation from the ECAS/EBSsystems to limit engine torqueaccording to the truck’s grossvehicle weight – ensuring overallperformance is maintainedin line with that of a fullyladen vehicle. This allows fuelconsumption to be minimisedduring acceleration withoutaffecting overall speed capability. The fuel-saving propertiesincorporated into the FST havebeen achieved by Montraconwithout any change to overallheight (4.2m), capacity orload placing flexibility.Montracon claim that the keyto the design is a curved roof, trailer sides that taper 40mmat the back plus the applicationof a line of vortex generators atthe rear edges of the roof andsides. This combination servesto divert the attached air flowfrom the trailer roof/sides into theimmediate trailer wake, whichreduces the partial vacuum orbased pressure drag (suction)that develops progressively inthis location with vehicle speed,to the benefit of fuel economy.Matched to the curved roof is agently sloping trailer bed (frontto rear), and aerodynamic frontbulkhead and aerodynamicside skirts that channel airflow along the trailer sides –away from the underside.News 6pgs.indd 12 11/05/2012 10:14

Now it is also possible to download it free via the Internet.“A digital driver’s handbook inthe office computer is a practicalcomplement to the printedversion stored in the truck. Thisway it is easy to quickly accessinformation about the vehicle,”says Stefan Borjesson, ManagerDriver Information at Volvo Trucks. For vehicle owner and dealeralike, it can be a good idea tohave a digital driver’s handbook, for instance when the vehiclechanges owner. And if the printedversion gets lost, there is alwaysa backup available while a newprinted handbook is ordered anddelivered. If the owner wants thedriver’s handbook in printed ordigital form in another languagethan the original version, that too is not a problem.“The downloadable driver’shandbook is ordered free ofcharge via the Volvo Truckswebsite by filling in the chassisnumber, model designation, contact details and requiredlanguage. face to faceLucaSraIveco ManagingDirector for theUK and IrelandIt’s almost a year since Ivecoappointed Luca Sra as itsnew Managing Directorfor the UK and Ireland.16Luca has been with Ivecosince 1997 when he joinedas Area Product Managerfor the company’s range of lightcommercial vehicles in Italy.Following this he has held severalkey posts within Iveco includingmanaging the company’s Turkishoperations. He took up hispost in the UK last July havingserved almost three years asSales Director for Italy; he isnow based at Iveco’s Watfordheadquarters in Hertfordshire. Now that he’s settled into hisnew role, <strong>Export</strong> & <strong>Freight</strong>’sHelen Beggs managed to catchup with him at the recent CVShow in Birmingham to findout how he – and Iveco - isfaring in the current climate.“This past year has been a verygood one for Iveco,” says Luca.“We are in a growing market andhave captured a significant share. That upward trend has extendedinto the first quarter of this year.”Have you made any significantchanges within the UKorganisation since your arrival?Yes, there have been some bigmanagement changes; we havemade some in-house promotionsand have also brought in expertisefrom outside the company. Theprocess of change is continuingas we seek to strengthen theorganisation and ensure wehave the right people to takethe company forward. It is people that make a companystrong; we are in a peoplebusiness. People can make adifference, whether it is positiveor negative; we want to havethe right people, with the rightqualities, we want to have thebest possible team around us.How is Iveco faring in thecurrent climate? Thereare some positive signs ofrecovery being reflectedacross the network, soare we over the worst? We are in a recovering market.Last year we regained more than25% in volumes and it remainsvery positive, especially for lightcommercial vehicles. The monthof March was significantlybetter. The market for mediumand heavy duty trucks is alsoin positive territory, thoughFace to Face-Luca Sra spread.indd 16 09/05/2012 10:49

face to facethere remains room for furtherimprovement in these sectors.I would especially like to seeour market share in the heavysector, at a comparable level tothe European average which isseven per cent, so that meanswe would have to double ourmarket share in the UK overthe next couple of years. Are we over the worst? I am nota magician, so I cannot predictwhat the coming months hold, but overall I am comfortable withour position and future plans. There is still a tough operatingenvironment out there, but therecession is past and confidenceis growing in the market. What are your plansand strategies for theimmediate future? We will continue to invest inour people, both within thecompany and across our dealernetwork. We want to continueraising our standards, and thirdly,we will be concentrating on ourcustomer base, building evencloser relationships because, asI said, this is a people business;it is all about people, andbeing close to our customers, finding out what their specificneeds and requirements are,can make a difference.Once again Iveco wasn’t atthe CV show, why is that?As a company, we have toprioritise, as many of the majormanufacturers do, although wedid have a presence at the showthrough one of our main dealers. The show is important to us,but we have to measure thecost against return; this yearwe couldn’t justify the financialoutlay. However, we continueto evaluate the situation. I amnot saying we will not everreturn, but at this stage wecannot say when we mighthave a presence there again. With fuel prices still highon the agenda, how isthe new EcoStralis beingaccepted by operators?Very well. Operators have tokeep costs down, and fuelrepresents a big percentage oftheir outgoings, so EcoStralisis proving to be a commonsense solution. On tractor units,EcoStralis is probably responsiblefor about 50% of our sales.Iveco was recently recognisedby the Low Carbon VehiclePartnership with an award forbeing the Low Carbon HeavyDuty Vehicle Manufacturer ofthe Year; how significant is thatfor you as a manufacturer? We were delighted with theaward, as we are continuallystriving to keep one step aheadof the competition as far asalternative fuel technologiesare concerned, such as CNG,hybrids and electric. We arealways trying to anticipate whatthe future demands will be withregard to cost effective transportsolutions for our customers. There is a lot of interest inalternative fuels from ourcustomers; some of our bigclients are already runningCNG vehicles in significantnumbers across the UK.Iveco, too, was the first UKtruck manufacturer last year tooffer EEV engines as standard.Financing new truck purchasescontinues to be difficult, especially as the big Banksand some other financialinstitutions are not interestedin lending to operators, so howis Iveco helping its customers?Financing a new truck is abig problem not just here butthroughout Europe, howeverwe have Iveco Capital whichsupports the sales of Ivecoproducts, funding the completerange of light, medium andheavy commercial vehicles withtailor-made financial services. Its aim is to help customers fundvehicles in the most beneficialmanner for their individualoperations, using their expertisein the industry and financialstrength as a member of theIveco Group, which is in turn partof the Fiat Group - one of theworld’s largest organisations.Do you have any specificplans to grow market share inNorthern or Southern Ireland? How is Iveco performing locally? The market in the north andsouth of Ireland is differentthan in the rest of the UK andindeed Europe because it isdominated by small to mediumfleets, so we adapt accordingly.Market share in Northern Irelandis growing; we have a strongdealership with NI Trucks andthat is making a difference. We will also be supportingthe forthcoming Truckfest inNorthern Ireland, but our planshaven’t yet been finalised. As for the south of Ireland, I amhappy to report that we also havea strong partner there; however, there remains a lot of work to doin the Republic which is still in thegrip of a financial crisis, but weare working to ensure that we willbe well placed when the recoverycomes; that probably won’thappen for three or four years yet.Where do you see yourselfand Iveco in five years’ time?Personally, I cannot say where Iwill be in the next five years, butmy aim and my ambition is to putin place the proper infrastructureto develop our position in theUK market and to grow a viable, profitable and sustainablebusiness for our stakeholders.17Face to Face-Luca Sra spread.indd 17 09/05/2012 10:49

test reportNew Actros:Is the beauty more than skin deep?Testing a pair of trucks head-to-head over two days and nights, we got under the skin of thenew Actros to see if it really is better, as Ian Norwell reports for <strong>Export</strong> & <strong>Freight</strong>…The truck tester’s dilemma isusually that they get an hour ortwo behind the wheel, but neverreally get into the groove andachieve that totally settled feelingwhere it all becomes intuitive. After what must be the launch ofa thousand cuts - press cuts thatis - Mercedes laid on ten test truckswith a range of power and caboptions. Five of the current MP3(Model Programme) and five ofthe new MP4 were lined up for usto drive from Genoa in northernItaly, westwards to Barcelona. Two full days driving with lunchtime changeovers gave us a brace20New Actros-Ian Norwell Spread.indd 20 09/05/2012 15:53

test reportof each model to go at and - jawsdropping all round - we were goingto sleep in the cabs. This looked likea decent test and we went lookingfor the real differences that the MP4brings, not just the obvious powderand paint that is there for all to see.Less Is MoreIt soon became clear that, on theengine front, less is more. The V6and V8 engines of 12 and 16 litresare all replaced by a straight six 12.8litre unit that’s done some clevermaths. The difference is impressivewhen you look at the numbers. Acurrent MP3 with a V8 and 510hp,delivers 2,400 Nm in all gears, butthe new MP4, as an 1845 with449hp, pushes out 2,200 Nm. Usingclever engine mapping, it matchesthe V8’s 2,400 Nm in 12th gearfor that extra pulling power whereyou need it most. When a gradientwould have previously meant achange down, the extra beef keepsyou on song. It means that there’sthe same torque on tap in top geardidn’t expect the straight six tocome as close in torque output.Higher injection pressures andmore robust components allow asmaller engine to give this extragrunt. We’ve thought for some timethat the badge on the door shouldproclaim the torque on tap and notthe horsepower. One day, maybe.ControlFloating along the autoroutethrough the south of France, withthe cruise set at 90kph, it gavetime for an effective assessment.Away from the power units, themost apparent effects of Daimler’smega-spend on this new modelare the ride and handling and thegear shifting process. The MP3’slane assist, and its machine gunrattle alarm, was not shy at tellingus when we were drifting on to thelane lines. While it wasn’t going offa lot, maybe five times in a morning,it was deployed only once or twicewhen we were driving the MP4.We took this as a measure of theimproved straight-line stabilityon the new chassis. It certainlyfelt far more sure-footed. As forour favourite devices is EcoRoll. Itbreaks the drive - Mercedes call it acomputer-controlled freewheelingunit - and the revs drop to 500rpm.It is only activated in top gear, andwhen the conditions are right, but it can let you roll along forconsiderable distances for free. The drive is re-engaged whenthe speed either falls away, orwhen a downhill section lets thespeed climb too high and enginebraking is needed. It was our firmimpression that MP4 managesthe engage/disengage processmore smoothly and resorts toEcoRoll more frequently thatits predecessor. We loved it.Under the StarsWe overnighted in an MP3Megaspace, followed by an MP4with the ‘Streamspace’ cab. Itwould take a picky driver to moanabout the space and storage inthe current Megaspace cab, andthe Streamspace was a distinctcontrast with a 2.3 metre widthand not quite enough room for a6’2” driver to fully stand up. Witha 170mm engine hump intrusion,it is intended for “local andregional work” according to M-B.We would agree, and five nightsaway would be just a little tight. There are plenty of cab optionsto choose from, including a 2.3metre flat-floor version for thefleet operator who wants to gofor driver appeal and keep hisother eye on residual values too.The night heater arrangementin the MP4 was perfect with aswitch over the bunk and justdial in the temperature on thedash. Air was pumped throughall the conventional daytimevents and it was almost silent.Stay AlertAll in all there are serious upgradesto important areas with the newActros, but putting the truck aside,we were reminded that truck-relatedcrime is getting to be a big issue.Securitas patrols, complete withmean-looking dogs, were providedby Mercedes at our overnight stops. We guess that ten brand-newtrucks with journalists, cameras, laptops and the like probably didlook like an easy target, but thesame levels of security are sadlynot available to regular driverson their nightly park-ups.An economy on its knees, hasnow made Spain a hot-spotfor truck and load theft. Notwanting to end on a downer, butUK-international drivers to Spain, need to be more vigilant than ever.from an engine that is more thanthree litres smaller. Lower weightand smaller capacity must have apositive effect on fuel economy.Half a day behind the wheel of anMP4 1842 was impressive too. Itonly had 100 Nm less torque thanthe ‘old’ 1851 in top gear. Withnearly 90hp less than the V8, wethe gear shifting, quite a lot haschanged. While on paper it’s still atwelve-speed box with unchangedratios, the delivery is different. The major changes are softwarerefinements, and the shifting is alittle swifter and much smoother inthe new Powershift 3 box. The gearselector has moved from the floormounted pedestal, up to a steeringcolumn control stalk where youinitially engage D, N or R and whereyou can ask for up or downshiftsas required. Such is the tuning thatwe rarely did intervene. One of21New Actros-Ian Norwell Spread.indd 21 09/05/2012 15:53

Some of the drivers that wetrained in the early days of TTSare now returning for DriverCPC 10 and 15 years later”With a 20 year history therewas no better way for TTS tocommemorate this milestone thanto upgrade their training facilities.A new building developmentstarted in 2010 and constructionwas completed in 2011. Thefacility is now fully functionaland to date TTS has seen almost1000 drivers, technicians andtransport managers receivetraining in the new centre.“Looking around,I can honestly saythat no other privatetraining organisationin Northern Irelandcan offer the rangeof training facilitieslocated in onecentral site that wehave provided.”Michael adds. “Our building hastwo separate workshops, onefor motor vehicle techniciansand another for bodyshoptechnicians, It also includes newclassroom facilities, an ICT suiteand a forklift training area.”The training centre is ideallylocated as it has primary roadlinks to both the M1 and M2,and even the most remoteareas of Northern Ireland canbe reached within 90 minutes.Belfast International Airportis 10 minutes away making itan ideal commute for visitinginstructors and trainees.“The core training that weoffer for the Transport Industryis centred around drivers andmanagers. “ says Michael.“Driver CPC, ADR and the newCPC qualification for transportmanagers are all available here.We offer commercial drivertraining for LGV and Bus driversand can offer tailored drivingassessments for companies. ”“In conjunction with our transportcourses we provide a range oftraining relevant to the MotorTrade. Apprenticeships for motorvehicle technicians and bodyshoptechnicians are offered at TTSand our workshops are availablefor hire to outside manufacturersand technical trainers. We arestarting to see a definite crossoverbetween the two sides of ourbusiness. Take for example DriverCPC, parts suppliers and recoverycompanies employing driversin light and heavy commercialvehicles are in scope of Driver CPClegislation and the new OperatingLicencing requirements.”In addition to a new building,TTS employed two new membersof staff, designed a new logo, launched a Facebook presence, and introduced 3 new transportcourses. A busy start to the year!“Whatever your training needs, apprentice qualifications, drivertraining or transport management, contact TTS, they might just havethe answer! Michael closes, “Weare interested in broadeningour course provision, so if youhave a training need that is notcurrently available, talk to us andwe’ll see how we can help.”Logistics apprenticeships offer real opportunityPrime Minister David Cameron told an audience of party supporters and business people how the governmentplans to create more apprenticeships and make vocational training easier to access and more rigorous.Advocating the roleapprenticeships have to playin achieving the best jobs, the prime minister pointedout how half of the boardmembers at Rolls Royce in Derbystarted out as apprentices. It is highly appropriate thatthe prime minister chosea training provider in thelogistics sector to make hisspeech on apprenticeships. To date, over 25,000 individualshave successfully graduated withSkills for Logistics apprenticeships, going on to earn an estimated£0.5bn per year between themand bringing their employers theefficiency benefits of employeeswith up to date and relevant skills.“SfL can point unequivocally tothe high quality and success ofits Logistics job and employerfocused apprenticeship schemes. These are created in closepartnership with employers in theindustry and are built around thehigh demand for the right kindof skills in the logistics sector. This means our apprenticeshipshave delivered individuals withthe capabilities demanded bythe logistics industry,” said DrMick Jackson, CEO of Skills forLogistics. “Success is measuredby their ability to carry out thejob in its entirety, assessed bythose already skilled in the role.”News 6pgs.indd 22 09/05/2012 10:55

test reportIveco On Parade:Vehicles Built for BattleThe defence vehicle business is for folk with deep pockets and a lot of patience.<strong>Export</strong> &<strong>Freight</strong> was offered access to Iveco’s defence manufacturing HQin Italy’s Tyrol region. Ian Norwell went along to find out more.24Most of us only get tosee the trucks that arebuilt for battle throughthe media’s camera lens, but aclose up look shows them to beeven tougher than we thought.Iveco’s Bolzano plant in thenorthern Tyrol, has a long historyof defence contracting, sinceLancia started there in 1937.With two other developmentcentres in Italy, another inUlm and a further operationin Brazil - serving a substantial2,000 vehicle contract withthe Brazilian army - they havea global reach. It’s reflected inthe fifty or so countries on theircustomer list, which includestwenty NATO members. As we toured the production area, where there are no ‘lines’ as such,it was soon apparent that wewere looking at a hand-buildingoperation. The bustle of regularproduction lines was replaced by aquiet and purposeful atmosphere. After our visit to the IvecoDaily van factory in Suzzara theprevious day, where 53 robotwelders are kept busy, thecontrast was striking with not asingle automated welder in sight. From Bolzano, Iveco supplies tenof Europe’s armies, includingthe British Army. As well as themilitary versions of the Trakkereight-legger that we know in theUK, there are smaller multirolevehicles that are the workhorsesof the military. They get used foreverything from weapon carrierto patrolling unit, ambulanceand command vehicle. They mayonly be the size of Iveco’s Dailyvan, but their unladen weightis over six tonnes, armoured, tooled up and ready to roll.Iveco’s Light Multirole Vehicle(LMV) appears in the BritishArmy’s fleet as the Panther, withan unspecified number currentlyin Afghanistan. Feedback fromthis active theatre is channelledinto product revisions and theimpact of the IEDs (ImprovisedExplosive Devices) and minesthat splatter our BBC eveningnews, has spurred innovation.ProtectionCarlo La Corte, sales engineerfor Iveco’s multirole product, gave us a brief tour of theirLMV, which has an impressiveorder book of 3,200 unitsIveco Defence Spread.indd 24 09/05/2012 10:58

test report(80% delivered) including 400to the UK MoD. “This vehicle’srelatively small size and variedability makes it the transportof choice for short noticeoperations, so we’ve concentratedon occupant protection.”Without going into detail, an IEDblast coming up through the floorcan result in terrible injuries. Thephysics of blast energy and howit can be absorbed, neutralised ordeflected is a specialised science.La Corte explained that thedesigners aim at sending blastenergy in any direction, otherthan towards the armoured crewcabin. “We’ve spent a lot of timeincreasing the survivability of IEDand mine explosions. As they havebecome more dramatic, we havebeen more creative in channellingthe energy they release in otherdirections.” La Corte pointedout the armoured underside ofthe truck, which is not flat, butV-shaped like the hull of a boat. This helps deflect blast energyaway to the sides. A doubleskinnedfloor is the second lineof defence. Valuable feedbackfrom the troops on the front linein the now notorious Helmandprovince, was revealing that themetal supports that held the seatsto the floor were themselvestransmitting blast energy up intothe seat and crippling occupants.A radical re-design turned theproblem on its head. Insteadof bolting the seats to thefloor with metal, they are nowattached to the roof, and tothe floor, by angled webbing. Itmight look a bit like seat belt, but we reckoned that therewere special materials in use, with carbon fibre most likely.Assembled with tensionedstraps, this design effectivelysuspends the seat in mid-air,from the floor and the ceiling, and strips away the structuresthat connect it to the vehicle, tothe absolute minimum. “We areconvinced that this innovationis saving lives,” said La Corte.DetailAttention to detail is paramountso engines are assembled on siteand gearboxes are manufacturedfrom scratch. Any sub-suppliers,and the factory they use, mustbe approved by the relevantcountry’s defence ministry, so itis a more practical propositionto build on a single site thango to the time and expenseof gaining approved status formultiple plants. This, togetherwith security issues, leads to thehand-built philosophy. We feltthat, as a working environmentfor engineers, it was second tonone and the philosophy of “thebest or nothing” reminded usof a tour around an F1 factory. Some basic re-engineering ofthe transmission componentswas also called for.The heavy-duty transfer boxwas relocated aft to prevent itbeing blown into the cabin. Wesaw an empty transfer case, justcast and milled with none ofthe internal shafts and gearing, and it was hard to lift off thefloor. A ‘full one‘ would do alot of damage, so it has beenrelocated to the rear of the truck, below the area that is designedto be blown off and awayfrom the armoured crew cell.To give a rough idea of theforces involved in an IED blast, the recording devices that canbe placed on board (‘black-box’style), are triggered by forcesin excess of 50G, and sensorsthat measure the increases inatmospheric pressure reach 17bar. With reliability crucial, wewere interested to note that theLMV’s drive train was the same190hp, 3 litre, 4 cylinder unit fromthe Iveco Daily van, mated to asix-speed auto from ZF. As thevault-like door closed, completewith its 8cm thick window glass, itdid inspire confidence, but we stillwouldn’t want to test it in service. If the low radar signaturecreated by the tri-hedralsurface panels, the hidden heatsources and low emission paintsdon’t keep this truck out oftrouble, it will have to rely onsome of the best constructiontechnologies in the world.25Iveco Defence Spread.indd 25 09/05/2012 10:58

SoapboxA regular column fromPhil FlandersRHA Regional DirectorScotland and Northern Ireland26About this time lastyear, P J Boyle andhis son were jailedfor tachograph andinterrupter offences. The drivers who allpleaded guilty weregiven suspendedsentences. The 11 who are from Scotlandhave now had their driverconduct hearings with JoanAitken the Scottish TrafficCommissioner. She hasdetermined that each of theeleven drivers had lost his fitnessand revoked their large goodsvehicle driver licences. Shedisqualified them for periodsranging from 18 months to3 years and in one case anindefinite disqualification.Miss Aitken stated that shewas lenient due the drivers cooperating with VOSA and theCumbrian police throughoutthe investigation. Over theyears a significant number ofGB drivers have been dealtwith for a wide range ofoffences ranging from speedingthough to the most serious.Anyone caught using a mobilephone points can expect aninvitation to a drivers conducthearing and most end up witha short suspension. A secondoffence will see a longersuspension and so on. Anotherexample was a driver convictedof smuggling drugs. After his jailsentence he lost his entitlementto drive trucks for a few years!I would imagine that in theBoyle drivers’ case, theiremployment prospects havediminished greatly and theymay struggle to get a decentjob when their suspensions areover. The insurance premiumsfor companies consideringemploying them will probablybe a lot higher as well and mayinfluence prospective employers. Is it worth breaking the lawfor a few extra pounds a weekwhen there is a strong possibilitythat when caught earningswill be drastically reduced?Perhaps now the message willstart to get through that offencessuch as these will not betolerated. By all accounts thereare many drivers in NorthernIreland who seriously breakdrivers’ hours rules and interferewith the tachographs. So I wouldhope that at some stage soon, the powers that be will considerintroducing driver conducthearings over here. It will be animportant deterrent that willhelp reduce unfair competitionand make the roads safer. The vast majority of hauliersfrom GB welcome it and allin Northern Ireland who tryto do the right thing shouldit welcome it too as well asapplauding Miss Aitken’s andthe other Traffic Commissioners’actions to ensure a safer andfairer road freight industry!TRU RoadshowsIt was pleasing to see so manyattend the road shows organisedby the Transport Regulation Unitlast month. By all accounts morethan 2,000 attended and nowhave a better understandingof what is expected over thecoming months and years. What is a really concerning isthat quite a number do nothave a “hire or reward” licenceand should have had one along time ago. I would not besurprised if the number is in thehigh hundreds! Somehow theyhave been under the radar andnow the opportunity to get onebefore the changes take effectis diminishing rapidly. There aresome who I hope do manageto get themselves sorted butthere are still quite a numberwho seem not to care and willcontinue to operate illegallyand no doubt plead ignorancewhen they get caught. Untilthat day comes they are takingwork that should be done bylegal licensed hauliers and inmany instances with the fullknowledge of their customers.Fuel Duty RegulatorThe SNP has launched a petitionsupporting the introductionof a Fuel Duty Regulator. Itcoincides with figures publishedby the European Commissionshowing the proportion oftax levied on fuel by the UKTreasury is the highest amongstall EU members at 57.4% forunleaded and 55.8% for diesel.Tax expressed as a percentageof the pre-tax price is also thehighest in the EU: 134.9% forunleaded and 126.3% for diesel.Over the years we havesupported the SNP’s proposalsas they should bring stability toprices. It will help much morethan the Conservative “fair fuelstabiliser”! It seems that it onlylimits increases in duty to therate of inflation if the oil pricestays above £45 ($75 dollarsequivalent) and the escalatorreturns if it drops below for a setperiod. It doesn’t sound fair orstable to me. A couple of yearsago there was some support forthe SNP from Northern IrelandMP’s. It is needed more thanever now!! To sign on line go tohttp://www.change.org/petitions/uk-government-i-support-theintroduction-of-a-fuel-dutyregulatorand encourage othersto do the same. We need tokeep the pressure on and letthe Government as Westminsterknow we won’t go away!Soapbox 1pg.indd 26 09/05/2012 11:38

Big Turn Out for‘International’ CV ShowDespite the absence of many of the leading truck manufacturers, this year’s CVShow in Birmingham was by all accounts an overwhelming success.30Most of the majorvan makers werethere, as wereleading names from othervital sectors of the industry, offering plenty for the visitorto ponder over the three days.Next year’s show, meanwhile, has received internationalrecognition from theautomotive industry’s globalbody, OICA (OrganisationInternationale desConstructeurs d’Automobiles).Comments SMMT ChiefExecutive, Paul Everitt: “TheCV Show is already the UK’slargest road transport eventbut with OICA’s accreditation,it is now recognised as oneof the most influential andimportant events on theglobal calendar. This year’sShow has proved to be aresounding success and ournew international status willhelp to build recognition ofthe important role of the UKroad transport industry.”Geoff Dunning, Chief Executiveof the RHA commented, “Wealready attract exhibitorsfrom such countries asChina and Turkey, and thisadditional exposure shouldextend our reach to aneven wider market.”Among those not at thisyear’s event was DAF Trucks, whose Managing DirectorRay Ashworth explainedwhy. “There are severalreasons: we had the RAIShow in Amsterdam lastweek which hasn’t beenthere since 2007 - a five yeargap. Suddenly we have twotruck shows in two weeks.“However, of course, DAF werevery much at the CV Show lastyear and I can assure you wewill be back next year as wellas some significant activitylater this year at Hanover.”(See elsewhere in this issuefor a full report on DAF Trucks’approach to the year ahead.)So, what was new at thisyear’s show? <strong>Export</strong> &<strong>Freight</strong> spent two days atthe event to find out.International Truck of the Year Makes UK DebutMercedes-Benz proudly unveiled the latest addition to its rangeof trucks; the New Actros featured prominently on the stand, with four of the mighty vehicles taking pride of place. This was the first time the International Truck of the Year 2012 hasbeen shown in the UK, forming the focal point of the Mercedes-Benz stand, in the shape of a 2551 GigaSpace (6x2), a 2545GigaSpace (6x2), an 1845 BigSpace (4x2) and a 2545 StreamSpace (6x2), highlighting both the Euro V and Euro VI engines. It is the first truck which has been developed rigorously to complywith the Euro VI emissions standard. The figures certainly stack up:Fuel consumption in the optional Euro V variant is around sevenper cent lower than for the predecessor model. In the case of theEuro VI version, the figure is around four per cent lower, combinedwith a reduction in AdBlue consumption of around 40 per cent. The New Actros is the first all-new truck to have beendeveloped uncompromisingly under the “Trucks you can trust”premise: 2,600 hours of fine-tuning in the wind tunnel; 50million kilometres of engine testing on test rigs and in reallifeoperation; and 20 million kilometres on the road.Alongside the New Actros trucks were an additional seven vehicles ondisplay, including a brand new Fuso Canter 6C18 4x4, which is soldand supported in the UK by Mercedes-Benz and its dealer network.Sam Whitaker, Mercedes-BenzMercedes-Benz New ActrosDonal Rice, RK Trucks and Des Evans, CEO MANMAN Puts FocusOn CustomersMAN Truck & Bus UK Limitedonce again focused exclusively oncustomer vehicles as the centrepieceof its CV Show stand, whereeight operator trucks were ondisplay, including a MAN TGS32.400 8x4 BB (G Webb HaulageLtd), a MAN Corinthian5 TGX26.480 6x2/2 BLS (ConferenceHaul International Ltd) and a MANTGM 15.290 4x2 BL (Avon Fire).CEO, Des Evans, said: “These sayfar more about the MAN brandthan any number of anonymousvehicles prepared specially for theShow. These are trucks into whichoperators have placed their faithand, even more telling perhaps, their hard-earned money. Andit’s not just the trucks themselvesthat are important to them, butthe MAN pre-sales and after-salessupport that goes with them.“MAN has long seen trucks assimply the final piece of thejigsaw for operators. They needthem for the work they willdo for them, but everythingelse associated with them canoften be well outside their corebusiness activity. That’s perhapsalways been true of the ownaccount operator, but increasinglyeven haulage, logistics anddistribution operators see trucksas merely the means to an end.“So today we are working inclose partnership to give themfinance packages for costefficientacquirement if theyCV Show 2012 4pgs.indd 30 10/05/2012 12:31

from the Office of the TRUGoods Vehicle Operator LicensingQuestions AnsweredDonald ArmstrongHead of the TransportRegulation Unit34The go-live date of 1st July for the new Operator Licensinglegislation is only weeks away and the Transport RegulationUnit held Industry Open Days in March to give operators theopportunity to meet officials and discuss the impact of the new operatorlicensing legislation on their businesses. Over 2,000 operators attendedthe events in Armagh, Omagh, Coleraine and Newtownabbey. It became clear from the questions raised at the events that there is aneed to clarify the position regarding what does or does not come withinthe scope of the new legislation. The following questions are typical ofwhat was being asked and the answers are set out to bring clarity to theminds of operators, vehicle hire companies, maintenance providers, etc.Who needs an Operator’s Licence? The Act states a person shall not use a goods vehicle on the road for thecarriage of goods for hire or reward or in connection with any trade orbusiness carried on by that person, except under a licence under the Act.There are exemptions from this requirement, but in general termsanyone using a vehicle, or combination of vehicle and trailer, with agross plated weight of more than 3,500kgs requires an operator’s licenceif they are carrying goods for hire or reward. If they are carrying theirown goods as part of their trade or business the weight requirement isbased only on the vehicle itself and does not include the trailer weight.A list of exemptions is available for certain vehicles and functions andthese can be viewed on the Transport Regulation Unit website. Theexemptions regulations are still in draft stage and subject to approvalof the Northern Ireland Assembly before coming into effect. What type of licence?Perhaps even more difficult to determine than whether or not alicence is needed is the question of what type of licence is required. There are three types of licence:A Restricted Licence for those who wish only to carrytheir own goods as part of their trade or business;A Standard Licence for those who carry their own goods ormaterials in connection with a trade or business and/or carry goodsfor hire or reward. This licence covers all transport operationsin the UK. A Transport Manager CPC qualification is requiredto be held by somebody in or employed by the company.Standard (International) Licence – same as above exceptthis licence covers transport operations throughout Europe.A Transport Manager CPC qualification is required to beheld by somebody in or employed by the company. The key question an operator needs to ask when deciding whichlicence he needs is “who owns the goods?” A restricted licencecovers the carriage of the operator’s own goods only.I only operate vehicles once a week and coverlittle mileage. Do I still need a licence? There is no concession for low mileage. If a vehicle over 3500kg isused on the public road to carry goods as part of a tradeor business it must be covered by an operator’s licence.I operate recovery vehicles. Do Irequire an operator’s licence? There is an exemption for recovery vehicles to lift, tow ortransport a disabled vehicle in certain circumstances. Thisdoes not extend to vehicles that are purposely disabled orto the transport of vehicles generally between premises. What are the requirements for companieshiring out trucks and trailers? The legislation applies to all companies who use vehicles over3500kg to carry goods as part of a business or trade. Rentalcompanies would need an operator’s licence if they transporttheir own goods. Additionally, as one of the new powers underthe legislation enables the TRU to impound vehicles whichare not covered by an operator’s licence, rental companies may wishto ensure that customers have an operator’s licence before hiring.Do I need a 6 weekly maintenanceinspection and brake test? The frequency of maintenance inspections depends on the typesof load and the distance travelled per year. The Departmentrecommends that the frequency should be between every 4 and13 weeks depending on use. While the onus is on the operator toensure that the vehicle is roadworthy and the brakes are in order, thelegislation does not require any specific equipment to be used. How do I get a restricted licence? In June existing own account businesses will receive a letterfrom TRU enclosing an application form for an operator’slicence and guidance on how to complete the form. Thecompleted form and application fee will need to be returnedto TRU within the fixed timeframe set out in the letter.Once the completed application is received, a permit will beissued which will be treated as if it was a licence and it willrequire the operator to comply with the list of undertakingssigned up to in the licence application formOperators who do not apply for a licence within the allotted time framewill be required to make a full application for an operator’s licence andmeet all the standards in full from the outset. In practice this meansapplicants will have to satisfy standards of fitness/good repute, financialstanding and establishment as well as advertising their operatingcentres and meeting environmental standards for those centres.I operate a skip hire business –which licence do I need?If the material being collected is the property of the skip hirecompany itself, a restricted licence would suffice. If, however, thematerial is being lifted and transported for another company i.e.the purchaser of waste, then a standard licence is required.I am a maintenance provider. I collect the customer’svehicle, carry out maintenance work on it, take it totest and transport it back. What licence do I need?If a maintenance company transports someone else’s vehicle to and froma place where it is to be worked on, a standard licence is required. If I carry goods into the Republic ofIreland, what licence do I need?If carrying own goods as part of a trade or business then arestricted licence is needed for Northern Ireland, but no licenceis required for the Republic Of Ireland. If carrying goods for hireor reward, a standard International licence is needed for journeysto other EU Member States including the Republic of Ireland.Donald Armstrong Soapbox 1pg.indd 34 09/05/2012 12:02

face to faceVinceWelshAfter Sales Director,MAN Truck & Bus UKCommitted to becoming ‘the best serviceprovider in the industry,’ the MAN Truck& Bus dealer network extends to almost70 dedicated MAN service and supportlocations around the UK, offering thehighest standards of vehicle up time. And they do it increasingly courtesyof MAN’s unique ‘Up Time Principle,’through which, for example, MOT firsttime pass rates have now reached animpressive 93% among MAN dealers.<strong>Export</strong> & <strong>Freight</strong>’s Helen Beggsrecently caught up with MAN’sAfter Sales Director VinceWelsh to find out more.36As After Sales Director,Vince’s area ofresponsibility is extensiveand covers service, parts, networkdevelopment, MAN OwnedDealer Operations, Warrantyand Contract Maintenance.“In summary,” he says, “myresponsibility starts after thevehicle is sold and continuesuntil it is scrapped, covering allpoints in between including theinfrastructure to support it.”There are customers whoare holding onto their trucksfor longer because of theeconomy, meaning AfterSalessupport becomes even moreimportant; what is MAN doingto meet that demand? We have noticed this is truebecause, over the last few years, our vehicle parc increased evenin depressed new vehicle marketconditions. The challenge isto increase our penetration ofthis market. We currently sell53% of all new vehicles onsome form of contract. We aredeveloping additional productsin the areas outside Repair andMaintenance contracts, suchas, comfort managed, partssupport on parts for oldervehicles, used vehicle warranties, repair and maintenancepackages for used vehicles. What, in your words, is theconcept behind Valueline, andwhat has been the reaction fromcustomers?Valueline was conceived toovercome the ‘perception’ inthe market place that all MANparts were expensive (in truth, some had been but this wasdue to exchange rate increasesbetween 2008 and 2010 ) Todate we have realigned 500 partsto ‘market related’ prices. Thereaction from both our dealernetwork and customers has beenextremely positive. Valuline hasincreased our retail turnoverbetween 2010 and 2011.How is Scania influencing theparts side of the business? We don’t have much competitionfrom Scania to be honest. Thepeople who are extremelyaggressive in the parts marketare the OE suppliers, such asKnorr Bremes and Wabco. Will there be an exchange ofmajor components such as MANbuying ZF gearboxes – will youuse Scania gearboxes in future?I don’t know to be honesthow any collaboration withScania will work out.Have you any moredevelopment plans for theaftersales side of the businessin terms of network expansion? We see expansion of the networkas natural progression. As we sellmore trucks we will need moredealer points. At the moment wehave 68 and we see the potentialof this being above 80 by 2020.How is the Irish market Northand South responding andperforming in terms of partssupply? A lot of hauliers arenow seeking cheaper partsand servicing from the holein the hedge brigade? Howare you dealing with this?We have two different marketswith different parameters. Our Northern Ireland dealer iscontracted to MAN Truck andBus UK, while our SouthernIreland dealer is an importercontracted to MAN Munich.Regarding parts business, dueto exchange rate differentialsthey have advantages anddisadvantages. The implimentationof VOSA standards in NI willmake a huge impact fromJuly this year and we feel theoperator will be keen to use themain dealer more and more. Our UTP programme in the UKhas made a huge difference tooperator standards throughoutour dealer network An exampleof this is is our increase in MOTfirst time pass rate. In 2006, atthe start of UTP, it was 67%,today it is up to 93%...and rising!Face to Face-Vince Welsh 1pg.indd 36 09/05/2012 12:14

product launchRoadload offers RevolutionaryInnovation in TransportationIt’s been described as the low level van that does the job of a truck – and it certainly caught theimagination of visitors to the recent CV Show in Birmingham when it made its public debut. The SuperLow fromRoadload offers operatorsa faster, safer and cheaperalternative to using a box vanor a 7.5t truck – and because itsits so low to the ground thereis no need for a tail lift, therebyreducing downtime and the riskof accidents, lowering servicingcosts and increasing payloads. It evolved from the company’smore specialised U-tail, arevolutionary multi-purposevehicle offering similar advantageswhich first made an appearanceto much acclaim about twoyears ago; it is essentiallya conversion based on the3.5 tonne Peugeot Boxer. The patented Roadload U-tail hasbeen modified to accommodatea special removable rear-loadmodule, thus eliminating the needfor a rear tail lift, or ramps forloading, which also makes it easierand safer to use; it can lower itsload to the ground in seconds. Not surprisingly, big supermarketretailers have quickly realisedthe unique benefits of thevehicles and the impact thattheir ground loading/unloadingand demount capability couldhave on their businesses. Theysee the utilisation of U-tail, inthe role of an inner city deliveryvehicle, as an important plankin their drive to provide a bettercustomer experience by virtue of itreplacing large articulated vehiclesdelivering to smaller stores.Roadload, based at Thetfordin Norfolk, was established in2009 followed by an intensiveproduct development programto ensure the U-tail andSuperLow vehicles would standup to the most demanding andrigorous requirements of thecommercial vehicle industry.“We were overwhelmed by thepositive reaction from operatorsvisiting the CV Show,” saysInternational Sales DirectorConal McCourt. “They could seethe enormous potential of thevehicles right away; there arealready quite a number of U-tailson the road with operators reallyimpressed by its performance.Other customers are also currentlytrialling the vehicle – and, ofcourse, we are also very excitedby the potential for the newSuperLow, which has attracteda lot of interest, especially fromthe big hire companies.”The Roadland Superlow,a new low level box van40Roadland's U-tailRoadland U-Tail & Superlow Spread.indd 40 09/05/2012 12:15

product launchSuperLowThe ground breaking and uniqueRoadload SuperLow is basedon Roadload’s 5.6 tonne U-tailchassis which has achieved animpressive 27.31 mpg in trials.Roadload argue that based onusage of 80,000km @ £1.47pence per litre, fuel costs dropto £12,164 against £22,146for the more usual 15mpg fora payload equivalent, giving anincredible saving of £9,982.The Roadload SuperLow hasa 200mm loading heightrising 100mm during transit. Itmaximises both the volume andpayload and, with its self-levellingair suspension, gives a smoothride taking care of its goods. This revolutionary concept reducesboth loading and unloadingtimes, avoids working at heightsand provides the maximumamount of capacity. Box volumesup to 36m 3 and payloads up to3 tonnes can be supported.“The SuperLow has air suspensionas standard but no rear axle so weare able to fit a super low floorgiving an amazing 300mm loadingheight making loading safer andfaster. Because there’s no taillift there’s no servicing costs ordowntime with breakdowns.”Currently, there are three versionsin the SuperLow range. The SL35is the smallest SuperLow offeringoperators a versatile compact LowLevel box van that can be drivenby anybody with a standard Bcar licence, while the SuperLow55 Short and SuperLow 55 Longoffer the same Low Level box vanthat is driven on a C1 licence.U-tailThe U-tail is also offered inseveral different versions, creatingopportunities for pre-loadingboxes and switching loads tosupport many different uses. These van derived conversionsfit well on urban roads andRoadland's U-tailcan offer higher fuel efficiencythan larger vehicles. The U-tail 55 Short and U-tail55 Long deliver a demountablebox that can also be driven ona C1 licence; the U35 is thesmallest U-tail offering a versatilecompact demountable box vanthat can be driven by anybodywith a standard B car licence. In all versions, the rear box canbe lowered to the ground inthree ways - handheld remotecontrol, near side body mountedbuttons or a manual hand pumpused in case of power failure. With the remote control orbuttons the box will lower toground in under 10 seconds. If required the U-tail can thendetach completely from its boxand reversed onto a secondbox in around two minutes. There are a number of differentbox types available for allversions - freight, fridge, flatdeck cage and specialist boxfit outs, for example, forworkshops, supermarkets, andexhibitions – and all vehiclescome with an on-board camerasystem to aid reversing. All Roadload conversions arecovered by 12 month parts andlabour warranty, subject to serviceschedule, while the Boxer cabcomes with a 3 year / 100,000mile warranty; cab servicingcan be completed directlyby your local Peugeot dealerevery 2 years / 24,000 miles. The Roadland Superlow41Roadland U-Tail & Superlow Spread.indd 41 09/05/2012 12:15

in conversation withMichaelMeagherEmirates SkyCargoManager for IrelandWhen Emirates launched its inaugural Dublin – Dubaiservice just over four months ago, some may have thoughtit a bold move given the global economic climate in generaland Ireland’s challenging financial standing in particular. But it is a move that is paying off, as <strong>Export</strong> & <strong>Freight</strong>’sDavid Stokes discovered in conversation with MichaelMeagher, Emirates SkyCargo Manager for Ireland. For those readers not toofamiliar with EmiratesSkyCargo: as the airline’sfreight division, it recentlycemented its position as aleading global player in theair cargo industry by winningthe Platinum Award (Air CargoCarrier – 800,000 or moretonnes) at the prestigious AirCargo Excellence Awards 2012.It has also been voted 2012Airline of the Year in anindustry poll of airlines, financial institutions, lessorsand investors. Indeed, sinceits launch in 1985, EmiratesAirline has received morethan 400 international awardsin recognition of its effortsto provide ‘unsurpassedlevels of customer service.’Its new state of the art CargoMega Terminal opened in2008 on a 43,600 squaremetre site at Dubai Airport, substantially increasing itsground-handling capacityand giving it the capabilityto handle all types of cargofrom one central location. It features automated handlingsystems and real-time trackingof cargo, as well as fullyintegrated computer systemsthat link airlines, customs andfreight forwarding agencies,so that consignments canbe traced and retrieved inminutes, while dedicatedfacilities for courier shipmentsand express cargo providefast-track, priority channels.Meanwhile, the CargoMega Terminal’s specialhandling facilities caters, forexample, for live animalsthat are accommodated innoise protected areas withtemperatures regulatedto suit their individualneeds. And independentlycontrolled, special storagezones meet the criticalrequirements of temperaturesensitivemedicines andperishable goods. But back to the new Dublinfacility from where Emiratesis now building on itsalready established freightbusiness and is looking to theimmediate future with greatconfidence, as our interviewwith Michael Meagher reveals. He has been in this businessfor over 30 years, with wideexperience in Ireland, Europeand the Middle East. Hejoined Emirates from anotherairline in Jeddah when thenew direct service fromDublin was established.“My new role is a challengethat I am enjoying immensely, setting up a new business, bringing together a newteam and seeing the fruitsof our labours produceresults,” he says.Just four months sincelaunching in Dublin, how has the businessfared? Has it lived up toinitial expectations? It is fair to say that ourexpectations have beenexceeded. There has been greatenthusiasm from our customersfor the new direct service andwe are already planning toincrease freight capacity. Some may think it wasa bold move to open upthe Dublin-Dubai route, considering the economicclimate in Ireland; whatwere the motivating factors?Obviously, we did ourhomework at the beginning, exploring in depth what themarket potential was. Emirateshad been investigating thepossibilities for quite sometime and decided that now42Face to Face-Michael Meagher-Emirates Spread.indd 42 09/05/2012 12:15

in conversation withwas an opportune momentto launch the direct service.Emirates, of course, has beenin the Irish cargo market formany years, covering boththe north and south of theisland, being served as an ‘offline’ destination, with truckingconnections from all of theairports into the UK and Ireland,so we had an existing consumerbase on which to build on.Although we are based inDublin, we offer an all-Irelandservice. We have regular roadfeeder services, for example, from Shannon and Cork, whilecargo out of Belfast is currentlyrouted through Manchester. What makes you differentfrom the competition?Have you been winningover customers from otherplayers in the market?First of all, as a multiple awardwinning airline, we can serveover 120 destinations worldwide, connecting Ireland to all of them.Secondly, and significantly, wehave uniformed wide-bodiedcapacity across the business, enabling us to take freight directlyout of Dublin to anywhere inour global network, and that isquite unique, as other airlineshave only limited wide-bodiedfacilities on specific routes, withnarrow-bodied capacity on others. As to growing our customerbase; of course, existing clientshave been supporting us downthrough the years as an off-linecarrier and they have obviouslytransferred across to our directservice. There is a strong focuson exports from the island, andwe are generating additionalbusiness by working with freightforwarders, shippers and otherson new opportunities, particularlyin the Far East, with seafoods andother perishables going into Chinaand to the Middle East in general. There are many entrepreneurialpeople in Ireland who are workinghard to develop their businessesand are willing to invest notjust their money but their owntime, and we are delighted towork with them to open up newmarkets as they grow and expand. What carrying capacity doyou have? I understandyou are about to increasetonnage capability?Currently, we have capacity outof and in to Dublin of 15 tonnesof cargo on our Airbus 330, butfrom July, due to the success ofthe route, both from a passengerand cargo perspective, we willbe replacing that with a Boeing777, increasing capacity to over25 tonnes on a daily basis. How many destinations canyou connect Ireland with?As I mentioned, with a one hop toDubai, we can connect customersto over 120 destinations aroundthe globe in a safe, secureand hassle free manner. Ourdestinations include over 70countries in Europe, NorthAmerica, South America, theMiddle East, Africa, the Indiansubcontinent and Asia-PacificWhat types of productare you carrying intoand out of Dublin?Apart from all the standard typeof products, they include freshfoods and other perishable goodssuch as seafood and time andtemperature sensitive productsfrom the pharmaceutical industry. The market for the export of foodand perishables is supported byCool Chain, which is EmiratesSkyCargo’s temperature-controlledcontainer solution, allowing forthe carriage of commoditiesat a constant temperature, and boosting the lifespan oftemperature-sensitive products. As you know, up until a few yearsago, the electronics industry inIreland was a major exporter, nowovertaken by pharmaceuticals, butit remains an important part ofour business; in addition, we arealso bringing in component forthe industry from China. Otherlines include clothing from India. An important part of our business, too, is the transportation oflive animals for which wehave specialised facilities.Looking to the future, haveyou identified any particulargrowth areas that youmay concentrate on?We are looking at furtherexpansion of the pharmaceuticalbusiness, providing more capacityto destinations that clients require. As you know, Ireland is one ofthe top exporters in the world ofpharmaceutical products, withmany of the leading companiesin the sector based on the island,so we will continue to work withthem to make the distributionof their product to the globalmarket as efficient as possible, including to Australia which is oneof the important marketplaces;we have 10 operations a day intoAustralia from our Dubai hub.We also see further potentialin the seafood sector, providinga tailor made service to meettheir requirements. There are,for example, clients in the westand northwest of Ireland whoharvest their fish at night time, delivering it into us for transfer toDubai which takes less than threehours, arriving in Hong Kong orBeijing the following afternoon. We also see opportunities withinthe fresh food area and the dairyindustry where customers areseeking out new markets not justin Europe, Asia and the MiddleEast, but in other countries likeAfrica; Emirates, through itsDubai hub, can provide exactlythe rapid and efficient type ofservice these products demand.STOPPRESSEmirates has justintroduced a larger aircrafton its Dublin route twomonths early becauseof surging demand.A 360-seat Boeing 777-300ER hasbeen deployed to Dublin, whichhas become one of the airline’smost successful new services.Just three weeks after the9th January launch of flights,Emirates announced a largeraircraft would be fast-trackedfrom 1st July this year. However, after a further reviewand aircraft availability, itwas decided that the AirbusA330-200 needed to beupgraded even sooner.43Face to Face-Michael Meagher-Emirates Spread.indd 43 09/05/2012 12:15

Seatrucknow has 20 per cent of theIrish Sea market and expectsfurther growth as theirunaccompanied trailer modelcontinues to gain ground.Alistair Eagles adds: “We arethe only Irish Sea operatordedicated solely to the carriageof unaccompanied freight. This is what the operatorswant in these tough economictimes. Cost control is vital, but with no compromise onservice. We provide operatorswith real economies, as theunaccompanied trailer is themost cost-effective way to movegoods. Driver-accompaniedmovements are much moreexpensive. Our solution alsoreduces road mileage. Heyshamand Liverpool – our primary UKports – are much closer to theorigin and destination of goods, compared to traditional routingsthrough Scotland and Wales”.Seatruck Ferries 2pgs.indd 48 10/05/2012 14:10

Elsewhere oil tankervolumes declined 2% and breakbulk fell by 3% to the year end.The Irish ports and shippingsectors were confronted witha year of two distinct halves: 6months of growth followed by6 months of weaker demand. After a solid first quarter Irelandwitnessed clear evidence ofshipping volume demand coolingover the remaining quarters.Shipping volume growth almosthalved in the second quarterbefore turning flat to negativeover the remaining quarter tothe year end as the expectationabout the pace of the globalrecovery, and also Europeansovereign debt issues, remained.“The latest report again showsa strong correlation betweendevelopments in the real economyand the changing pattern ofmaritime traffic over the courseof last year.” said IMDO DirectorMr. Glenn Murphy. “We areoptimistic, that despite theslowdown in the pace of therecovery last year, that mostof the heavy volume losseshave already been sustained, however the scope for growththis year remains limited andcontingent on improved demandconditions in global markets.”The report does note thatexports of container traffic tokey overseas markets in theUS and Asia increased by 5%,driven by the performance ofthe chemical, pharmaceuticaland food & drink sectors, inparticular dairy and meat exports.Traffic volume demand to andfrom the UK remained flat.Providing the foreword to thisyear’s report, the Minister forTransport, Tourism and Sport,Leo Varadkar TD, commented:“The efficient transport of goodsinto and out of the country iscrucially important and supportingthis is a key function of myPictured with the Minister (centre)at Belfast Harbour Office are (L-R)Roy Adair, CEO Belfast Harbour,Charles Jordan, Project Manager,ScottishPower Renewables, KeithAnderson, CEO, ScottishPowerRenewables and ChristianSkakkebaek, VP, DONG UKDepartment. It ismy intention that, in the comingmonths, a new ports policy willbe published and put in place”.The report concluded that theoutlook for 2012 is for limitedgrowth across the principalcargo sectors. Container importsfrom overseas markets recordedtheir 20thconsecutive quarter ofnegative growth, which continuesto provide logistical challengesfor shipping lines seeking suitablecontainer capacity to meet exportdemands. And that’s thepoint; it’s all about increasingefficiency, maximising productivityand doing this in a safe andsimple way for the driver.”The new design removes the needfor multiple tarpaulin fasteners, central stanchions and looseparts such as rigging boards.Schmitz Cargobull has apermanent demonstratoravailable for fleets in theUK to trial on request.71Tachographs Spread.indd 71 09/05/2012 12:55

classifiedsDAF announces Euro 6engines with common railDAF Trucks announces a new engine generation, developed for the new Euro 6 emissionslegislation, which comes into force in theEuropean Union on 1 January 2014.The 12.9 litre Euro 6 PACCARMX-13 engine uses state of theart common rail technology, aturbo with variable geometry andadvanced controls for maximumefficiency. In order to complywith the strict Euro 6 emissionsrequirements, it features exhaustgas recirculation, together with SCRtechnology and an active soot filter.“The PACCAR MX-13 engine isultra clean”, says Ron Borsboom, member of the DAF TrucksN.V. Board of Managementand responsible for ProductDevelopment. “In addition, we’vegone to great lengths to obtainindustry leading fuel efficiency, reliability and sustainability.”Compared with the current Euro5 standard, Euro 6 requires thatnitrogen oxide (NOx) emissionsmust be reduced by a further77%, while soot particle emissionsmust be cut by 66%. In concreteterms, this means that nitrogenoxide emissions have to be reducedfrom 2.0 to 0.46 grams/kWh, andsoot particle emissions from 0.03to as little as 0.01 grams/kWh.These are however not the onlyrequirements: Euro 6 engines mustmeet these stringent requirementsfor a minimum of seven yearsor 700,000 km, in all operatingconditions. In future, authoritieswill carry out random checks toensure that vehicles in service arecompliant with these standards, and new on-board diagnosticssystems will warn the driver in theevent that this is not the case. The PACCAR MX-13 engine ischaracterised by its combination ofproven, state of the art technologiesand a large number of technicalinnovations. “The block has beenredesigned for even better stiffnessand, like the cylinder head, it ismade of strong compact graphiteiron”, explains Borsboom.SAVE up to 30% on Fuel CostsLGV / COACHES / VANS / SALES REPRESENTATIVESLLOYDS - F.E.D.Fuel Efficient DrivingJAUPT APPROVED CENTRE AC00884Other Benefits include:• Reduce Maintenance• Reduce Insurance Premiums• Reduced EmmissionFree CPC moduleOur customers have told us that following our trainingthey have saved up to 30% on their fuel costswww.lloydsmotoring.co.uk T. 028 9049 4000ARMAGH LTDSpecialists in Maintenance & RepairsFull Range of Spare Parts AvailableApproved Tachograph & Speed Limiter CentrePre-PSV Test Lane98 Cathedral Road, Armagh, N Ireland, BT61 8AJTel: 028 3752 3491 and 028 3752 6393 (stores)Fax: 028 3752 7878 Email: cbtarmagh@gmail.com73Classifieds.indd 73 11/05/2012 14:42
