Chapter 1. IntroductionMarine litter is defined as any persistent, manufactured, or processed soliddiscarded material, disposed of or abandoned in marine and coastalenvironment. Marine litter comes from multiple sources, and it can be foundboth in densely populated regions and in remote islands because of itstrans boundary movement through ocean currents and winds. Since mostmarine litter consists of non biodegradable material, a continuous input ofmarine litter can result in a buildup of marine litter in marine and coastalenvironment, unless it is removed. To preserve marine and coastal environmentfrom marine litter, many efforts have been taken at global, regional, andnational levels. Each member of the NOWPAP region, one of the most highlypopulated regions in the world, is also faced with marine litter problem and isdirectly affected by other countries because of regional currents and otheroceanographically characteristics of semi closed sea area.NOWPAP member states have conducted researches and developed relevanttechnologies to deal with marine litter efficiently. In other words, NOWPAPmember states have investigated on the aspect of marine litter generation andinstitutional supports needed in order to prevent generation of marine litter, aswell as the development of technologies for collection and treatment.This report is divided into two parts to introduce technologies related to marinelitter. The first part is about prevention and collection of marine litter afterunderstanding generation of marine letter. The second part is about properdisposal and treatment technologies of marine litter in environmentally-friendlyways and recycling in accordance with type of marine litter and environment.For technologies and research outcomes related to prevention and collection ofmarine litter, this report introduces solid waste collection equipment, submarineequipment that can survey the submerged waste in seabed in real time, andseveral prevention measures and methods for collecting and processing of themarine litter.For the treatment technologies of marine litter, waste Fiber Reinforced Plastic(FRP) Vessel melting treatment system developed in Korea will be introduceas an example of proper disposal of FRP vessels. In addition, this report alsoprovides information on the incinerator which is also largely considered for the1
