My <strong>Communication</strong>degree provided me with the skills and knowledge to be successful in my Congressional internship.My internship had four main areas of activity including:General office work such as answering constituent phone calls. Communicating withconstituents was a difficult task. I often times had to vocally appeal to angry constituents. Theexperience in argumentative communication and persuasion taught me how to talk to theconstituents without revealing the opinions of myself or my Congressman.Lead tours of the U.S. Capitol. By the end of my internship I will have given 34 tours reaching297 constituents. I was able to bring history alive in one short hour, speaking of many pastpresidents, past congressmen, and past stories from the Capitol.Work with the <strong>Communication</strong>s Director to edit and manage press releases. Through themany courses I took as a communication major I learned the importance of social media andthe role it plays in any atmosphere.Assist the Legislative Assistants and Congressman with research projects. A student majoringin communication understands the plethora of research given during the course of the degree- the number of scholarly articles and journals that have been read through, picked apart andanalyzed are countless.Scholarship and Job OpportunitiesLPH will provide new scholarship and job opportunities in each issue of Simply Speaking. Email Dan Fogarty at dfogarty@natcom.org3rd Annual Nebraska LPH Undergraduate <strong>Communication</strong> ResearchConference - April 2, <strong>2012</strong>by Deb Whitt, Faculty Advisory Board Member, Wayne State CollegeOn April 2 Nebraska Wesleyan <strong>Communication</strong> Studies Department hosted the 3 rd Annual NebraskaLPH Undergraduate <strong>Communication</strong> Research Conference. The purpose of this conference is to haveundergraduates share their original research in communication with peers and professionals fromschools around the region. In addition to participation by Nebraska Wesleyan students, theconference was attended by students from Hastings College, Wayne State College and BakerUniversity in Kansas.


The conference keynote speaker was Dr. Jason Edwards from Bridgewater State University inMassachusetts. The topic of his talk was “Telling America’s Story: Political Advertising in the <strong>2012</strong>Electoral Campaigns.” Dr. Edwards discussed the influence of Super PAC ads on the <strong>2012</strong> election,the themes found within those ads, and what to look for as the <strong>2012</strong> race for the presidencycontinues.Next year’s conference will be held at Wayne State College.Lambda Pi Eta will have multiple sessions at NCA's 98th Annual Conventionin Orlando, FL in November <strong>2012</strong>. We hope to see you there."As you know the theme this year has been COMMunity to strive to make a difference not just in ourown COMM departments, but our community as well. The national LPH officers and advisors wouldlike to be apart of each and every organization's community service so we are asking for each LPHorganization to send a picture and description of your community project this year.
