Last Year's HighlightsBoston Brass and the Imani Winds: special residency programsIn January and February of 2009 both the Imani Winds and the BostonBrass chamber music ensembles were brought into the Sandler Center fora unique education residency program. Virginia Beach Public Schoolstudents were given the opportunity to not only watch these establishedperformers but also be taught and coached by members of both ensembles.The groups each headed into a Virginia Beach Public School elementary,middle and high school during their stay to perform for students andprovide them insight into the life of a professional musician. The musiciansalso held a special evening seminar for Virginia Beach Public School bandstudents studying either woodwind or brass instruments. During thisseminar students had the opportunity to hear these world-class musiciansplay as well as play themselves for members of either the Imani Winds orthe Boston Brass and then receive feedback and coaching. In the end,concluded with a flurry of questions from students: How many hoursshould I practice each day? Which brand of instrument is best for someonejust starting out? Where should I study in the future?

Mary Pope Osborne visits the SandlerCenter!In January of 2009, the Sandler Center student matinee of Magic Tree House:The Musical! Brought an extra special treat to our Sandler Center stage: MaryPope Osborne, author of the popular book series! In addition to greetingour student matinee audience prior to the show, Ms. Osborne visited withstudents of John B. Dey Elementary School in Virginia Beach - her very ownalma mater! Having grown up in a military family, Ms. Osborne found herselfliving on a Virginia Beach base, and enjoyed a nice trip back home.
