That eventfor men’s teams began in 1958 after an invitation fromJapan to establish a match between the two nations. The French were delighted to sponsor the inauguralwomen’s championship and arranged for it to be playedat the St. Germain Golf Club, near Paris, in October1964. The event, under the chairmanship of Vicomtessede Saint-Sauveur, was a triumph.A total of 25 teams and 75 players participated, whichinstantly established the competition as a member ofinternational golf’s family of championships. Spectatorenthusiasm at the first championship was keen, sincethe host team prevailed over the USA by one stroke. The French player Catherine Lacoste, who would laterbecome a heroine of the amateur game when she wonthe 1967 U.S. Women’s Open, was a big factor in theexcitement in her home country. Her final-round 73secured the Espirito Santo Trophy for France. MissLacoste tied with Carol Sorenson of the USA at 294 formedalist honors. While no official recognition is given for individualscoring, Jenny Chuasiriporn of the USA lowered the 72-hole individual scoring record in 1998. She shot 276 atPrince of Wales Country Club in Santiago, Chile, twoshots better than the score returned by countrywomanWendy Ward four years earlier at The National GolfClub in Versailles, France. In 1966, the World Amateur Golf Council assumedsponsorship of future Women’s World Amateur TeamChampionships. Since its second-place finish in theinaugural, the USA dominated, winning 13 times.Australia (1978, 2002), Spain (1986, 1992), Sweden(2004, 2008), and France (1964, 2000) are the onlyother multiple victors. For the first time, in 2002, the championship for theEspirito Santo Trophy was played on two courses. In 2003, the organization’s name was changed to theInternational Golf Federation.W. WorldAmateur
