In MemoryGlenna McKay1953 - 2004by: Renée HockI would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to a very special member of our judo family, whom I also considered to be a very dear friend of mine, Mrs. Glenna McKay.In 1999, Glenna assumed the role of Executive Director of Judo BC. Although she had been anactive member, and volunteer at the Burnaby Judo Club for many years, it was in her capacityas Executive Director, where I fully learned what an incredible woman Glenna truly was.Like all of you who were fortunate enough to be touched by Glenna’s spirit, I discovered apatient, hard-working, passionate, loving woman who taught me a lot about the kind of person Iwanted to become.Glenna continued her career with Judo BC until she moved to Las Vegas, and was unable toformally remain in the role of Executive Director. In spite of this, she made herself available tome for many months through phone calls and numerous emails, in order to assist me with thetransition into her old position. There are many stories like this about Glenna, because this story epitomizes the type of personthat she was. Glenna always made time for other people, no matter what was going on in herown life. This was still true even after she was diagnosed with cancer. When I spoke with her, she waspositive about her condition, and her ability to fight the disease. She expressed concern for herfamily, again, always thinking of others. There is so much more to say about this amazing woman, but how do you find the words toaccurately describe the type positive impact that she had on people, an impact that literallydefies description. After a hard fought battle with lung cancer, Glenna passed away on December 22 nd with herfamily by her side. Glenna is survived by her husband Ron, daughter Shawna, and son James. She will truly be missed.4

Judo BC Christmas CampAbbottsford, BCDecember 27- 30, 2004Submitted by: Renée HockThis year’s Christmas Camp saw athletes from all over British Columbia and WesternWashington come together for an intense, but extremely positive, judo experience. Practiceswere well attended with a minimum of 50 participants at every training session. The athletes trained extremely hard, and demonstrated the true spirit of judo. Participants werealso treated to technical sessions with Judo Quebec Executive Director and National TrainingCentre Coach Patrick Esparbes, former Canadian Champion Cynthya Tan, and by some of ourown outstanding athletes. There were team building events such as “movie night”, where a large proportion of the teambecame “Fockerized”, and an afternoon at the local wave pool, where athletes could relax in thehot tub, or become even more tired by choosing to enjoy the pool’s water based activities. Many thanks to coaches Bruce Kamstra, Fred Tan, Mark Tsuyuki, Tokue Suda, Ian Johnston,Russ Ko, Karl Larsen, and Toshi Yamazaki for coming out and helping to support this camp.Overall, this camp was awesome, and did so much to improve both the level, and the team spiritof the participants. However, another thing that also quite obvious, was the lack of juvenileaged participants.I cannot to stress to coaches enough how important these types of camps are to thedevelopment and future success of our athletes at both national and international levels ofcompetition.Coaches only need to look to our current top level athletes as Kimi Suda, Christine Tsuyuki,Karmen Larsen, Tess Lanzarotta, Kaitlyn Woodhouse, Blake Tsuyuki, Sacha Lamontagne, andAllen Laplante. These are athletes who are successfully making the transition from junior tosenior level competition, and all have one thing in common. They consistently attended all teamtraining camps throughout their developmental years as young judoka. So if you don’t believe my words, look around at our local success stories. Judo BC will belooking to organize another one of these types of camps prior to the junior nationals inEdmonton. I strongly advise all coaches to encourage all juvenile and IJF junior athletes toattend. Please check the Judo BC website regularly at www.judobc.ca for the latest in upcoming events.6

Also at the Kataexaminations in the future, we will begin to test candidates on their knowledge ofNage-waza and Katame-waza.. The Grading Board encourages everyone toreview the videos on the katas for sequence and initial moves but videos are onlyone tool to learn the katas. As videos do not show position, control, movement, kuzushi, etc. it is important to attend the clinics so instructors can properly teachthe katas.10

NCCPSubmitted by: Ron WrightChanges are taking place in the NCCP world. As you may or may not beaware, the “old” NCCP Theory format was replaced last April with a new“competency-based” approach. Level 1 and 2 Theory have been replaced withMulti-Sport A and B, respectively. On the Technical front, the old Level 1 no longer exists and is now called“Dojo Assistant”. BC has led the charge with the transition and has been the firstprovince to offer the new courses- one in Prince George last spring and one inMaple Ridge in the fall. Thanks to Russ Ko and Hank Boas, respectively, forassisting me at those two courses. Both went well and congratulations to thosewho participated. On the practical aspect, Sport Canada and the Coaching Association ofCanada have mandated a change in the way things are done. There are somesignificant changes being proposed and piloted. The most important one is aprocedure for candidates to be evaluated, which is similar to the way candidatesare assessed for belt promotion. When the potential coach is ready, he or shesimply has to teach a class in front of an examiner.Congratulations go to Kevin and Margot Thorneloe who became the first twocoaches in Canada to attain their Practical evaluation (and Level 2 certification) inthis manner. Way to go, Margot and Kevin! At the time of writing, plans are being formulated to have a Theory A coursein Prince George, as well as a Level 2 technical. As well, we are looking intohaving a Technical 1 course on the Island, and a Level 2 Tech on the lowermainland.By the time you read this, I will have met with the CAC and more specificinformation may be available as to future plans and directions. Final approval forthe changes rests with Sport Canada and we can’t move faster than they do! Moreinformation will be disseminated as it becomes available. If you have any questions about the NCCP, or would like info, or would liketo take a course, please feel free to contact me.Ron WrightNCCP Chair604.467.8643rwright14@shaw.ca12
