<strong>The</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>Curriculum</strong>Year 12For most students, the programme comprises:• four AS level courses*• an AS Extended Project Qualification (that extends into Year 13)• an Enrichment course from the Extended <strong>Curriculum</strong> plus additional citizenship activities andother extension opportunities• tutorial programme• up to four independent learning periods.* Students taking AS levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics will usually take 5 AS level subjects in total. A fewstudents may follow an A2 course in Year 12, if they have already achieved an AS qualification in that subject.Year 13For most students, the programme comprises:• four advanced level courses (usually three A2 courses and the Extended Project - continuedfrom Year 12) †• tutorial programme• up to six independent learning periods.In addition, some students choose to follow:• an Enrichment course.† In certain circumstances, some students choose to follow a Free Standing Maths Qualification (FSMQ) or an additional ASlevel subject in addition to the rest of their programme.Example timetables are shown on the next page.EnrichmentAll students do at least one Enrichment course in Year 12. Some courses, such as the Duke ofEdinburgh Award Scheme, are year-long courses. Others last up to 12 weeks, and so there is anopportunity to do two courses in the year. (See our prospectus pages 8-12 for more details.)<strong>The</strong> Tutorial Programme<strong>The</strong> relationship between an individual student and her/his Tutor is a vital element in a student’sexperience at <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>Road</strong>. Students meet with their Tutor every week and additional time is set asidefor individual support, careers guidance and other activities. (See page 17 of this booklet and ourprospectus, pages 14-15 for more details.)Independent Learning PeriodsEach student has a designated number of independent learning periods a week. For Year 12students, this would be up to four independent learning periods and, for Year 13, up to six. <strong>The</strong>seperiods can be used at the student’s discretion for study, research and homework. Students areable to use the <strong>College</strong>’s Silent Study Area, the Library and subject resource areas during theseperiods.Clubs and Societies<strong>The</strong>se are, of course, entirely optional. Many students choose to take part in societies ranging fromRock n’ Roll to Rock Climbing. (Please see page 30 for a list of current activities.)www.hillsroad.ac.uk13
