Karloff said he stayed with the group for two years, until it disbanded in June 1912 – although if his debutwas in November 1911, it couldn’t have been morethan seven months. No matter where and when ithappened, it wasn’t an auspicious start:I had finally become an actor, but I mumbled, bumbled, missedcues, rammed into furniture, and sent the director’s bloodpressure soaring. When the curtain went up I was getting $30a week. When it descended, I was down to $15 … 44At the end of the performance, as I was slinking away tosome dark corner, the manager came towards me with amalevolent gleam in his eye. “Karloff, you know darn wellyou’ve never acted before. Still, we like you and you’llstay with us.” 45Jeanne Russell Co.The full story of the Jeanne Russell Co. deservesmore space than can be afforded here, for it’s aninteresting and ultimately tragic tale that has neverbeen told.Ray Fowler Brandon, the company manager, was born in the 1870s in Centerville, Utah, where hisfather was postmaster and Justice of the Peace. Hismother was involved with a local theatre group andprobably gave him the acting bug. 46 He enlisted inthe Spanish American war, but returned home on sickleave without seeing combat. 47Jeanne Russell Alford was born in Salt Lake Cityin 1875, the daughter of a salesman. 48 The couple metin early 1906 in Ogden, Utah, where both belonged tothe William Bittner players. By now Jeanne had alreadydropped her surname on stage. 49 They were marriedsometime that year or next. 50 In 1907, they ran theirown theatre in Denver, along with Ray’s youngestbrother, Walter Lee. However, it closed and theBrandons went to Salt Lake City. 51 At year’s end, Leewas hired as manager of the Edmonton OperaHouse. 52 In June 1908, he struck out on his own asmanager and lessee of the Dominion Theatre, andenlisted his brother and sister-in-law to form aresident stock company. The Jeanne Russell Co. spent an eventful fivemonths there. Among other things, they organized agala benefit for victims of the Fernie fire, sued theEdmonton Journal for libel, were sued themselves fornot paying the orchestra, and earned the wrath ofBroadway playwrights for stealing plays – somethingthey not only admitted to, but took pride in. 53In the spring of 1909, the Brandon brothersleased the Lyceum Theatre in Lethbridge, intendingto become the resident company there. 54 However, thetheatre’s walls collapsed during excavation for a hotelnext door. Fortunately, the theatre was empty, so noone was hurt. 55 The Russell Co. packed up for Calgary,30 E-mail from Vancouver PublicLibrary, 11 October 2005, citingVancouver civic directories 1945-4931 E-mail from Ron Welwood, 1May 2005, citing Vancouver civicdirectories 1945-4932 Lindsay, Dear Boris, op. cit.,p. 14-1533 “Frankenstein had beginningsin Nelson, Boris Karloff recalls,”Nelson Daily News, 20 January1954 and Boris Karloff & HisFilms, op. cit.34 http://www.ibdb.com/production.asp?
