Detailed Descriptions of ServicesPrincipals as Curricular Leaders SeriesPrincipals of all schools receiving staff development services join together in a monthly conferenceseries, Principals as Curricular Leaders. This series of Wednesday conferences provides opportunitiesfor principals to attend a keynote by a recognized leader in literacy or leadership, and to work in smallstudy groups with Project leaders, hearing the newest thinking of the TCRWP and contributing to theorganization's knowledge base. Enrollment in this service is limited and requires your monthlyattendance.Principal AlliancesDuring the 2011-2012 school year, the Kornfeld Foundation partnered with TCRWP to provide theopportunity for mentorship to our NYC principals, at no cost to you. We, along with the KornfeldFoundation, are thrilled to announce the continuance of this program. Nowhere else in the country isthere such support for principals and at this time of constant new initiatives, ever-changingrequirements and intense change, never has there ever been a greater need for support for curricularleaders. We are grateful to the Kornfeld Foundation for their continued support of our principals. This alliance was developed based on the successful superintendent as mentors program where longtimeschool leaders, such as Carmen Farina, Leslie Zackman, Anna Marie Carillo, and Laura Kotch, would make half-day visits to many NYC schools in order to support, advise and aid principals ascurricular leaders. We took what was so well-regarded from this previous design and refined thestructures for Principal Alliances to ensure that the program offered support exactly aligned to yourneeds. We’ve kept the same fabulous team of superintendent mentors and added on more principalleaders, however we’ve made changes to the program which allow for more choice and matchedsupport. For the 2012-2013 school year, several principals have again agreed to be willing to align support tomatch current needs of principals. We also have several additional principals that have added in theirexpertise. We continue to have our team of superintendents who have been so successful working withus. We invite you to choose from any alliance on the list, keeping in mind that no one principal cantake on too many of these partnerships, so alliances will need to be made on a first come, first servedbasis. Your colleague will spend half a day at your school and after that you can arrange a follow upmeeting wherever is best suited for your needs--at your school, at your colleague’s school, at TC aftera Principals Conference Day, etc. After your school has been accepted as a TCRWP Project School, you will have the opportunity tosubmit your top three choices for alliances on a separate application. If you have any questions, please call Jessica @ 212-678-3579or email services@readingandwritingproject.com

Coach CoursesCoach courses will meet 12 full days, usually Fridays, across the year in a designated school. Thecontent of each course will be the same, with a greater emphasis on either primary (K-2) or uppergrade (3-5) work. Participants will study how to create responsive, targeted instruction that is adaptedto the unique needs of particular classes. In order to answer the Common Core’s call for the acceleration of achievement, there is an all-handson-deckneed to study and develop methods and tools that can best help learners make progress.Coaches will be at the forefront of this effort, working with teachers to design ways to help all learnersreach the high expectations of the Common Core. Those who take these courses will have theopportunities to study, practice, and further develop the Project’s newest methods of coaching andinstruction as well as use newly developed tools such as performance assessments, rubrics, andlearning progressions to support teachers in creating exemplars and providing informative feedback tostudents. Above all, participants will learn how to support teachers in making data the center of theirpractice; studying ways to help teachers to gather and use data to tailor instruction and keep data-athandto work with students.Using the work of Charlotte Danielson and Norman Webb’s Depths of Knowledge as lenses, coacheswill also look at how to raise the level of cognitive demand placed on all students and ensure thetransference and application of learning across units, content areas, and grades. In addition, the courseswill offer opportunities to study how to support both teachers and students in setting and achievinggoals. Coaches will work to support teachers in involving students as invested partners in learning andwill emphasize students setting goals and creating action plans across the year. And, coaches will studyhow to keep Teacher Effectiveness criteria in mind as they coach and support teachers in raising thelevel of their literacy practice. Supporting teachers in accelerating the achievement of all learners hasnever been more challenging or more important and participants in these courses will engage in workthat will add to the thinking in this area. As always, the goal will be to learn how to help create andmaintain consistent progress across and within grades in a school. The Project's 2012-2013 Coach Courses are:Grade Emphasis Leader LocationK-5 with emphasis on K-2 Christine Holley Queens - PS 182K-5 with emphasis on 3-5 Christy Curran Manhattan - PS 59K-5 with emphasis on 3-5 Anne Taranto Manhattan - PS 158K-5 with emphasis on K-2 Shanna Schwartz Brooklyn - PS 29If you have any questions, please call Jessica @ 212-678-3579or email services@readingandwritingproject.com

Specialty GroupsIt is crucial that schools develop leadership capacity. As Michael Fullan has written, ―It takes capacityto develop capacity.‖ TCRWP’s Specialty Groups bring together potential teacher-leaders from acrossapproximately a dozen schools. These teacher-leaders study with the Project’s top experts on a specifictopic. Members of a specialty course generally convene in a school that has developed exemplarypractices so that the group can research students, implement classroom practices, and reflect togetheron teaching. These groups tackle focused topics that are generally new frontiers for New York Cityteachers. Groups meet for five full days across the year. These small, intensive groups meet during theschool day and allow experienced workshop teachers and Project leaders to work shoulder-to-shoulderas researchers pursuing serious classroom-based inquiries. The first meeting will be held at TeachersCollege; future meeting locations will be decided with group participants. These specialty groups meetthroughout the year. The Project's 2012-2013 Specialty Groups (Daytime) are:Grades Title Leader (s) Start DateK-1 Studying Foundational and Language Standards: WordStudy and Spelling in Primary GradesK-2 Using Performance Assessments to Revise Units andInform InstructionK-2 Becoming Experts in Small Group Work Methods Suchas Guided Reading, to Accelerate the Achievement ofOur Primary ReadersK-2 Closely Reading and Engaging in Accountable Talk inPrimary GradesK-2 Moving Primary Readers to Grade-Level TextComplexity: Read Aloud, Shared Reading, SmallGroup Work and Conferences to Help Kids Shift TheirReading Behaviors, Strategies, and Skills3-5 Creating Toolkits to Move Readers to Grade-LevelText Complexity Across the Curriculum3-5 Creating a Coherent, Braided Curriculum: ThinkingAcross Units of Study in Reading, Writing, and SocialStudies to Help Students Transfer Skills and StrategiesRachel RothmanRebecca Croninand CelenaLarkeyShannaSchwartzAmandaHartmanMary AnnColbert andNatalie LouisShana FrazinEmily SmithTuesday9/25/12Friday10/12/12Wednesday9/19/12Tuesday10/23/12Friday1/19/13Monday9/24/12Friday10/5/123-6 Using Research-Based Evidence to Inform Instruction: Colleen CruzThe Connections Between Brain Research andWorkshop TeachingIf you have any questions, please call Jessica @ 212-678-3579or email services@readingandwritingproject.comWednesday10/17/12
