Finishing CharacteristicsAging.Certain wood, such as cherry, will continue to mellow and darken over time. This brings warmth to lightly-stainedcherry and increases depth below darker stains.Color Variation.All Merillat Masterpiece finishes are hand-crafted. As such, each door will be consistently unique. In addition, thenatural characteristics of wood lend themselves to color variation, and this is also true when finish is applied. Veneerwood absorbs more stain than solid wood and will appear darker. Some door styles are built with a solid wood frameand a veneer center panel, which will show more color variation than doors with all solid wood components.Distressing.Factory-applied techniques that give wood a furniture-aged look. Random wormholes, compression marks, and cornerover-sanding are distressing elements used to convey gently aged fine furniture.End Grain.End grain surfaces and softer areas of the wood may accept more stain and often appear darker than other surfaces.This is a natural reaction when finishing wood products and potential variances cannot be controlled.Gum Streaks.Common in cherry, dark brown to black streaks run between the grain layers creating a crystalline deposit.Joint Lines.Since wood is in a constant state of expansion and contraction, visible lines are normal at the joints on the cabinet faceframes and doors. This does not weaken the finish or the strength of the joint.Mineral Streaks.In nature, mineral deposits may form in the wood as the tree extracts nutrients from the soil. Common in many woodtypes, these mineral deposits cause blackish-blue streaks in the grain. When a finish is applied to mineral streaks, it mayappear lighter or darker than other areas of your cabinetry.Semi-Opaque Color Finishes.Semi-opaque finishes feature a heavily pigmented stain utilizing a hand-applied process. They are semi-opaque, whichmay telegraph some of the natural beauty of wood. Joint lines and telegraphing may occur with any semi-opaque finish.Telegraphing.All wood species show some wood grain. The amount of grain will vary by species and finish. Oak is an open or coarsegrain wood. The grain will “telegraph” or visibly show through the stain.
