<strong>BSc</strong> (<strong>Hons</strong>) <strong>Nursing</strong><strong>Studies</strong> (<strong>top</strong>-<strong>up</strong>)fact fileThe <strong>BSc</strong> (<strong>Hons</strong>) <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> (<strong>top</strong><strong>up</strong>)academic online programme hasbeen prepared in response to changesoccurring within nurse education. BySeptember 2013, there will only bedegree level pre-registration nursingprogrammes <strong>of</strong>fered in the UnitedKingdom.This programme will allow existing nurseswho hold an RGN qualification, Diplomaor Diploma with Advanced <strong>Studies</strong>, theopportunity to develop their criticalthinking skills in the increasingly diverseand complex climate <strong>of</strong> health caredelivery. This programme is a proactiveresponse to changes occurring withinnurse education. There is a demand forhigher-qualified nurses and greater s<strong>up</strong>portin workforce planning for continuingpr<strong>of</strong>essional education and training <strong>of</strong>nurses to take on higher, more demandingroles.This programme has been designed asa distance learning programme and willallow students to work at their own paceand within time frames that suit them.Distance learning has the added appeal formanagers who cannot release nursing stafffrom busy clinical areas.Students will receive an inductionprogramme at the beginning <strong>of</strong> thecourse which will include an introductionto staff, e-portfolio and <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Winchester</strong> Learning Network training,and an introduction to the libraryfacilities. Further s<strong>up</strong>port is <strong>of</strong>feredduring the programme by Skype oneto-onetutorials, email and telephoneconversations and use <strong>of</strong> YouTube forinstant advice and help.The programme focuses on long termconditions and s<strong>up</strong>port and care <strong>of</strong> theolder patient which take into account thechanging demographic trends <strong>of</strong> an agingpopulation.Programme ContentThe course can be studied over amaximum <strong>of</strong> three years. The modules arestudied at <strong>University</strong> level 6 which is thefinal year <strong>of</strong> an undergraduate honoursdegree and students need to gain 60 or120 credits at this level, depending on thestudents entry pr<strong>of</strong>ile.There are two compulsory moduleswhich students have to complete and fiveoptional modules.Entry Requirements: All entrants willneed to be registered with the <strong>Nursing</strong>and Midwifery Council (NMC) andcurrently working in practice in theUK. Applicants should hold a Diplomaor a Diploma with Advanced <strong>Studies</strong>in <strong>Nursing</strong> or APEL equivalent, GCSEEnglish and Maths at Grade C or aboveand be computer literate with internetaccess. Students can alsostudy End <strong>of</strong> Life Care in a module duringwhich they will critically evaluate end <strong>of</strong> lifecare management strategies. Care <strong>of</strong> theOlder Person engages students with care <strong>of</strong>the older person within a health and socialcare perspective. The Dementia module willengage students with current health andsocial care debates.Evidence Based Practice allows the studentto expand their understanding <strong>of</strong> the needto deliver care based on the best availableevidence in line with the Nurses Code <strong>of</strong>Conduct (NMC 2010) and to develop theirresearch skills in preparation for Enquiringinto Health Care Practice.AssessmentAssessments may include academicassignments and on-line presentations,annotated literature searches andassignments using multi-media. Enquiringinto Health Care Practice is a 12,000 wordpiece <strong>of</strong> secondary research on a subject<strong>of</strong> your choice.Teaching TeamNick Purkis: has worked as a nursewithin the National Health Service for 20years in a variety <strong>of</strong> specialisms includingNeuro-rehabilitation. He has experience incurriculum design, assessment and studentlearning styles. Nick has completed anMA in Online Distance Education and iscurrently completing an EdD in onlinelearning. Carolis an experienced teacher who worksin both classroom and clinical areas tos<strong>up</strong>port individuals develop and providea quality service. Until recently Carolmaintained clinical practice in generalsurgery and high dependency care andis now a case worker for service and exservicepersonnel and their families.“It is an excellent course with practical and achievable measurable work-relatedoutcomes. The other important and significant point is that the course is flexible enoughto allow one to work while studying. Without hesitation I would recommend this courseto anyone who wishes to pursue it.
