<strong>UC</strong> <strong>Irvine</strong> <strong>Extension</strong><strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>Program</strong> in <strong>Facilities</strong> <strong>Management</strong>HAZARDOUS MATERIALS EMERGENCYRESPONSE TRAININGMillions of tons of hazardous materials aretransported, stored, and used every year by millionsof businesses throughout the United States. Whensuch materials get out of their containers in anuncontrolled way, hazardous materials emergenciescan result, which can result in property loss,environmental damage, injury, and death. There isalso concern for terrorism aimed at facilities thathandle hazardous materials. To the extent we knowhow to respond to such emergencies in a safe andeffective manner, we can minimize the problemsresulting from such releases. The following threecourses are designed to train students in such skills.The course schedule varies based on public demand.The courses can be delivered at a company site to suittheir scheduling needs. For more information, pleasecall (949)824-6538.24-Hour Handling Hazardous MaterialsEmergencies: Guidelines for First RespondersSOCECOL X498.15 (1)This three-day course satisfies federal OSHAregulation 29 CFR 19 1 0. 120(q) and Cal/OSHA 8CCR 5192(q) requiring all persons potentiallyinvolved in containing a hazardous material releaseor in evacuations to be trained at the First Responder-Operational level. Includes company personnelworking with hazardous materials on site, firefightersand public works employees who may be called tothe scene of a hazardous materials release and policeofficers potentially required to evacuate personsthreatened by such a release. Topics includehazardous materials safety and toxicologyorientation; spill discovery procedures; hazardousmaterials identification; required notification;Incident Command emergency management systemintroduction; containment methods; evacuation;shelter-in-place; field decontamination; disposalrequirements; documentation; contingency planning;and ways to protect your workplace from haz matthreats. Optional certification at the First Responder-Operations level by the CSTI (the training branch ofthe Governor’s Office of Emergency Services).8-Hour First Responder-Awareness TrainingSOCECOL 812.31 (0.7 CEU)This one-day seminar satisfies federal OSHAregulation 29 CFR 910.120(q) and Cal/OSHA 8 CCR5 192(q) requiring all persons potentially discoveringa hazardous material release in the course of their jobbe trained at the First Responder-Awareness level.Includes company personnel using hazardousmaterials; city, county and special district employeeswho may discover a hazardous material spill orabandoned hazardous waste. Topics include ahazardous materials safety and toxicologyorientation; procedures upon spill discovery;hazardous materials identification; requirednotification; and ways to protect your workplacefrom haz mat threats. Optional Certification by theCalifornia Specialized Training Institute (the trainingbranch of the Governor’s Office of EmergencyServices).8-Hour First Responder-Operations RefresherTrainingSOCECOL 813.1 (0.7 CEU)Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations(Cal/OSHA) 5 1 92(q) requires all persons potentiallyinvolved in containing a hazardous material releaseor in evacuations be trained at the First Responder-Operational level and receive annual refreshertraining. This one-day seminar provides that trainingwith review of hazardous materials safety andtoxicology, spill discovery procedures, hazardousmaterials identification, required notification, reviewof Incident Command emergency managementsystem, containment methods, evacuation, shelter-inplace,field decontamination, disposal requirements,documentation; contingency planning; and ways toprotect your workplace from haz mat threats. MeetsFR-O refresher training requirements. Curriculum isfrom CSTI (training branch of the Office ofEmergency Services). Optional recertification by theCalifornia. Specialized Training Institute (CSTI)upon passing course and providing photocopy oforiginal CSTI FRO certificate.Prerequisite: Handling Hazardous MaterialsEmergencies: Guidelines for First Responders,SOCECOL X 498.15; or certification at FR-O level.7 07/06
