Nichols has beenserving as dean of the Southern Branch at Pocatello.Students who transfer from the SouthernBranch to the University proper now comment:"Dean Nichols, during his three years at theSouthern Branch, has created a friendship withall the students and has met all his responsibilitiescheerfully and obligingly."Increasing enrollment at the Branch and Moscow'sout-of.the-way location has spurred a driveto have the Pocatello institution expanded into afour-year university. So far the State Senate hasvoted against installation of this four-year curriculum.Arthur W. Fahrenwald, dean of the Schocl ofMines, is hoping to create conditions in his schoolwhich will tend to encourage the students toacquire knowledge by directed self-study. Recentlyhe added to the School's collection a finedisplay of unusual minerals from the ancientmines of the Island of Cyprus.Dean Fahrenwald, of German- Norwegiandescent, received his Met.E. degree from theUniversity of South Dakota and his E.M. degreefrom the New Mexico School of Mines. He hasmade all types of sports his hobby.Under his able direction the School of Mineshas grown rapidly and now has an enrollment of90, including six research men.PAGE 30
