THE PURPOSE OF THECROSS AND FLAMEAWARDThe United Methodist Church acceptsthe programs of Civic Youth-ServingAgencies (Boy Scouts of America, GirlScouts of the U.S.A., Big Brothers Big Sisters,Camp Fire USA, and 4-H) as contributingto the church’s goals in its ministry withchildren and youth.The Office of Civic Youth-Serving Agencies/Scouting of the General Commission onUnited Methodist Men recognizes men andwomen who give unusual amounts of timeand energy in dedicated service with childrenand youth.The Cross and Flame program givesrecognition to adult leaders who have givenexceptional service in the use and promotionof programs for young people.CRITERIA FOR NOMINATINGA CANDIDATETHE RECIPIENT OF THE AWARD MUSTHAVE AN OUTSTANDING RECORD OFSERVICE TO CHILDREN AND YOUTHAS DETERMINED BY THE FOLLOWINGCRITERIA:1. Is an active member of a recognizedChristian church.2. Has given faithful service to the localchurch congregation by serving in churchleadership positions.3. Has a continuous record (three years) ofusing and supporting the programs of theCivic Youth-Serving Agencies/Scoutingin the life of the church.4. Has served these organizations on theunit (troop, club, etc.), district, council, orother level by active participation in theprogram.5. Has actively and effectively promoted thereligious awards program.6. Has promoted the use of religiousservices when camping or other activitiesthat take the scouting groups away fromthe church during regularly scheduledworship services.PROCEDURESNominees must be recommended tothe local church by the local churchscouting coordinator. The applicationmust be approved by the pastor ofthe local church and presented to thechurch administrative board, councilon ministries, or administrative councilalong with the application for approval.Upon approval, the application is mailedto the Office of Civic Youth-ServingAgencies in Nashville, Tennessee. Acertificate of merit, 5/8” clutch-back pin,ribbon and medal will be prepared andreturned to the local church. A check for$60.00 must accompany the applicationto cover all costs.
