Please state yourpreference on your application form.Duration:PermanentStart Date:As soon as possibleResponsible to:Grounds ManagerResponsible for:Responsible for the day to day work allocation of a small team ofgrounds assistants.Closing date: 26 th September 2007Interview Date:To be confirmedOVERVIEW OF POSTThe main purpose of this role is to maintain and develop the gardens of the University of Worcester sitesincluding its residential property. You must have practical gardening skills, a sound knowledge of plants,proficiency in the operation of garden machinery, an understanding and ability to support the implementationof relevant policies including Health and Safety, good communication and basic IT skills would be anadvantage.You will be capable of undertaking all aspects of horticulture and the physical challenges of the post.You must have practical horticultural experience with at least one year working in a professional garden.MAIN DUTIES1. The Grounds team are expected to work flexibly, covering for other members of the team in theirabsence and undertaking reasonable duties as directed.2. To ensure a safe working environment in line with the University of Worcester’s Health & Safety(H&S) Policy. Promote and, by example, ensure safe working practices at all times.As part of this, tasks may involve:a. To undertake basic servicing and repair of machines to comply with H&S regulations andensure all equipment is correctly maintained and serviced.b. To use all equipment, machinery & materials provided in line with training and/or guidelinesfor personal and public safety.c. To wear any protective/visible clothing provided for personal safety and well-being, enablingactivity at times of seasonal or inclement conditions.d. To use powered hand tools and light plant equipment, such as mowers, strimmers, hedgecutters etc, in addition to the usual range of tools and equipment on a regular basis.e. To use tractor and trailer and tractor-mounted machines on campus and between sites ;setting up and use of grass-cutting equipment with due regard to personal safety and to thesafety of others ; use of tractor for load carrying3. To undertake greenhouse work, including potting, propagation and pest control.4. To ensure pathways are free from snow and ice during winter months.5. To plant bulbs, bedding plants, trees and shrubs.6. To contribute in the strategic planning for the department7. To distribute work/job/task allocation to the team, monitor and supervise.


8. To respond to emergencies around the campus as a member of the Facilities team9. To act up for Grounds Manager when required.10. To assist in the training, development and motivation of staff to continuously develop their technicalskills and user relations.11. To assist in supervising staff, especially trainees and apprentices, to ensure standards of work andsafety are achieved and maintained.12. To support other teams in relevant tasks and carry out any other reasonable work as and whennecessary.13. The St Johns Campus is located close to the city centre in Worcester and is within 43 acres. StJohns campus is characterised by relatively low density development with non-residential and residentialbuildings of a range of ages and designs. There are extensive playing fields and the campus is attractivelylandscaped. The residential student halls provide 582 bed spaces. Oldbury house – the Vice Chancellor’sresidence and 2 no. 3 bedroomed properties are adjacent to the St Johns campus.The second site at Castle Street is the former Worcester Royal Infirmary, which is vacant following therelocation of the hospital. The site has an area of 22 hectares, is within walking distance of Henwick Groveand has potential for a mixed, use development.We also maintain playing fields in Battenhall and may develop this site with pavilion and changing facilities.The Grounds team are based within the Facilities Department, which covers a wide range of services withinthe University of Worcester, including Accommodation, Cleaning, Porters, Estates, Security, Reception,Venue Hire and Catering.Students living and studying on Campus come from a range of backgrounds, cultures and communities andthe primary task of the Facilities Department is to ensure all University of Worcester students live in aharmonious, secure, tolerant and respectful environment conducive to learning and personal development.
