Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor - Stage 1New pedestrian and cycle path to providesustainable transport alternativesThe path is a vital piece in thepedestrian-cycle network, joiningBrisbane’s CBD with the WesternCorridor, making it easier and safer forthe community to get out and be active.It will also ease traffic congestion andcontribute positively to a sustainabletransport future.The new shared access path will linkBoundary Road at Darra to Julie Road atCarole Park with connections to thelocal road network at Kelliher Road,Garden Road, Progress Road andGovernment Road at Richlands andClendon Street at Wacol.Pedestrian and cycle path under construction at WacolThe path will also provide:• a dedicated path for walking and cyclingaway from the general traffic• a convenient link between commuterdestinations• connections with the local street networkand other facilitiesFast factsPedestrian and cycle pathfeatures:• length – 5.6km• width – 3.5m• security lighting, whererequired, to improve safety• four rest stops to include:º shaded seatingº bicycle racksº drinking fountainsº themed signage panelsfeaturing local stories.• an opportunity for the communityto gain access to and enjoy thesurrounding environment• rest areas for pedestrians and cyclistsalong the route.CentenaryHighway almostcompleteThe Centenary Highway duplication isvery close to completion. Discovering new talentThe project team has beenworking with the localcommunity and professionalartists to develop artworkaround the theme‘Celebration of CulturalDiversity andLocal Heritage’.This community artwork project providesan opportunity for young emergingartists or talented amateurs to unleashtheir creativity and participate in aproject that celebrates the rich social andcultural diversity of Richlands and thesurrounding area.Around 450 young people from 12local schools and community groupsparticipated in design workshops duringMarch, April and May 2010. Close to 600individual drawings were submittedfor consideration in the overall artworkdesign. Students whose images areselected for the final designs willparticipate in painting murals for theirrespective locations and literally maketheir mark on the region.The majority of artwork will be located inthe new Richlands Station precinct.Some inspiration from thelocals – what the artworkmay look likeStation wallThe final design of the station wall willrepresent the rich and diverse historyof the area’s Aboriginal heritage, earlysettlement, military presence, culturaldiversity and local produce.Station columnA local Aboriginal story will be toldthrough contemporary Indigenous art onthe central platform column of the newRichlands Station. The hand-paintedcolumn will be designed and createdby professional Indigenous artist DaleWeston with the assistance of youngIndigenous people from Forest Lake StateHigh School.Bicycle lockersMore than just a storage area, the designof the new bicycle facility at the station willcapture the energy, spirit and fun of sportand recreation.Pedestrian and cycle path wall(Pine and Garden Roads, Richlands)Representing fauna and flora, thepedestrian and cycle path wall artwork willreflect the local environment.
