1IntroductionThis guide responds to an identified desire amongEnglish language teachers to make sense of therising tide of possibilities created by mobile languagelearning (also known as mobile assisted languagelearning or MALL).The ideas in this guide are based on a researchproject conducted at The Open University in2013–14, funded by a grant from The British CouncilResearch Partnerships scheme. This project hasinvestigated the experiences of English languagelearners and teachers who have explored mobilelearning to some degree, even if only tentatively andinformally. Recognising that we live in an increasinglymobile world, where travel and migration are morecommon and mobile devices are a part of everydaylife, the research has focused particularly on theteaching and learning context of English for Speakersof Other Languages (ESOL) and English for AcademicPurposes (EAP).key aspects of mobile-enabled language learningactivities for students. One of the key aspects ofsuccessful mobile learning of English that theframework highlights is the use of activities whichexploit a dynamic language and technologyenvironment while drawing on the distinctivecapabilities of teachers and learners.It is our hope that this guide will be read widely andadopted in teacher development throughout theworld. We look forward to receiving feedback onwhether it has enabled teachers and learners torethink and revitalise their practices.Teachers already know many of the ingredients thatcan spell success for language learning and thisnaturally leads to consideration of how languageteaching might be enhanced by the careful use ofmobile devices.
